American Settings for François De Belleforest's Tragic Histories
Framing the Early Modern French Best Seller: American Settings for François de Belleforest’sTragicHistories HERVÉ-THOMAS CAMPANGNE, University of Maryland, College Park This article shows how François de Belleforest (1530–83) adapted a variety of historical and geo- graphical sources to meet the demands of the histoire tragique genre in composing three narratives set in the Americas. One recounts the destiny of conquistador Francisco Pizarro; another is the story of Marguerite de Roberval, who was allegedly marooned on a Canadian island; the third concerns Taino cacique Enriquillo’s heroic rebellion in 1520s Hispaniola. These narratives fostered a tragic im- age of the Americas that had a considerable influence on early modern readers, inviting them to ponder essential questions about European encounters with the American continent and its inhabitants. INTRODUCTION IN THE PRELIMINARY epistle to his famous anthology of Histoires tragiques (Tragic histories, 1559), a compilation of six narratives borrowed from Matteo Bandello’s (ca. 1485–1561) Novelle (1554), French author Pierre Boaistuau (1517–66) thanked his collaborator François de Belleforest (1530–83) for his work on a translation that “would probably not have been published without his help.”1 Boaistuau also announced the imminent publication of Belleforest’s Continuation des Histoires tragiques (1559),2 which would mark the beginning of one of the most successful literary collections in late sixteenth-century France and Europe. Between 1559 and 1582, Belleforest published five volumes of histoires tragiques,compris- ing ninety-eight stories of passion, murder, and revenge that were reissued sev- eral times by printers in Paris, Lyon, Rouen, and Torino. FROM THE PORTOLAN CHART TO THE LATITUDE CHART The silent cartographic revolution by Joaquim Alves Gaspar Centro Interuniversitário de História das Ciências e da Tecnologia Pólo Universidade de Lisboa faculdade de Ciências Campo Grande 1759-016 Lisboa Portugal [email protected] This paper explains how, following the introduction of astronomical navigation, the transition between the por - tolan-type chart of the mediterranean and the latitude chart of the Atlantic was facilitated by the small values of the magnetic declination occurring in western Europe during the Renaissance. The results of two prelimi - nary cartometric studies of a sample of charts of the sixteenth century are presented, focused on the latitude accuracy in the representation of northern Europe and on the evolution of the longitudinal width of the mediterranean and Africa. Cet article explique comment, après l’apparition de la navigation astronomique, la transition entre la carte- portulan caractéristique de la méditerranée et la carte avec latitude de l’océan Atlantique a été facilitée par la faiblesse de la déclinaison magnétique en Europe occidentale, à la Renaissance. One of the most important aspects of music in politics is that it serves as a popular means to express societal issues and communicate political messages. Musicians use the art to produce political songs praising or opposing political authorities or political climate. A number of political songs involve propaganda geared toward propagating and entrenching political rulers thus placing music and musicians at the core of politics and governance systems of our societies. The influence of music makes numerous African politicians including dictators use the domain for their political objectives. This thesis explores how musicians help in building and entrenching dictators by using the regime of Yahya Jammeh in The Gambia (1994 to 2016) as a case. This research relies on related scholarly works and in-depth semi-structured interviews with eleven respondents (six influential musicians, two DJs (TV/radio presenters) and three top (former) government officials) as primary sources of data. Five political hit songs were also selected and analyzed to understand the discourses they propagated. The interview results and propaganda song lyrics praising Jammeh are analyzed using Maarten Hajer‟s (2006) discourse analysis. -

Aurélio de Oliveira Estudos em Homenagem a Luís António de Oliveira Ramos Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto, 2004, p. 805-814 As missões de Diogo Gomes de 1456 e 1460 Aurélio de Oliveira Diogo Gomes aparece-nos como uma das pedras mais determinantes de novas políticas e atitudes com que, a partir de certa altura, se passou a entender e encarar os contactos com as populações da Costa africana. Pouco se sabe deste homem. Até ao presente, nem lugar nem datas de nascimento nem o ano da sua morte. Não temos hoje grande dúvida que Diogo Gomes foi natural de Lagos. A referência indirecta à caravela que capitaneou, e com a qual integrou a expedição de Lançarote em 1445, assim o permite concluir1. Zurara refere, com efeito, o Picanso natural de Lagos (por duas vezes dizendo ter ele capitaneado uma caravela {Uma caravela de Tavira e outra de um homem de Lagos que se chamava o Picanço". Zurara não refere nenhuma das façanhas militares desse Picanço, contrariamente ao que nos conta dos outros - essencialmente envolvidos em acções de guerra2. Ora, Diogo Gomes não participou, de facto, nessas acções mas fez resgate a seu modo e, ao que se apercebe, sem grande violência. O que se apura é que o Picanço natural de Lagos não se chamava efectivamente Picanço, mas Diogo Gomes. A caravela que capitaneou nessa expedição, essa sim, teve por nome Picanço, (ou Piconso). Desde aí pelo menos se afirmaria como mercador. O seu nascimento deve ter ocorrido por volta de 1425. -

Avelino Teixeira de Mota briefly addressed the problem when writing about the garrison of São Jorge da Mina fortress. Joseph Bato’ora Ballong-Wen-Mewuda also made a passing reference to women in the 1 discussion of a broad range of other issues. Similar in character are 2 some passages in works by Christopher DeCorse and John Vogt. Paul Hair relegated his perspicacious remarks to the footnotes of his work on 3 the founding of the fortress at Mina (now Elmina). More extensively the issue has been dealt with in some articles discussing the role of African women in the development of domestic trade networks in West Africa 4 and exploring the networks’ links with the Portuguese trade. Venice and the new Oikoumene: Cartography in the 15th century Venedig, Oct 8–09, 2013 Report by: Lena Thiel, Universität Kassel, Mittelalterliche Geschichte On October 8 and 9, 2013, an international, interdisciplinary conference funded by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation was held at the Marciana National Library (BNM) and the German study cen- ter in Venice (DSZV). The organizers, INGRID BAUMGÄRTNER (Kassel) and PIERO FALCHETTA (Venice), as well as the director of the BNM, MAURIZIO MESSINA (Venice), emphasized as the conference's central concern the transformation of geographic and cartographic paradigms that Ptolemy's work provoked in the Latin West from the early 15th century on. Venice harbored at the time most diverse cultural phenomena that came to be of great importance for Renaissance art and thought. According to Baumgärtner, the cartography of this period interlinked multiple compe- tences, proficiencies, traditions, and orientations. Only through an analysis of those factors is it possible to appreciate the impact of Ptolemy's Geographia as the actual catalyst of major changes during the 15th and early 16th centuries. The conference's first section dealt with maps as well as with text-based concepts of space. After an introduction by GHERARDO ORTALLI (Venice), LAURA FEDERZONI (Bologna) discussed manuscripts and prints of Ptolemy's Geographia from the 15th and 16th centuries. She examined the interplay between the rediscovery and translation of the text and the flourishing of geography as a humanistic science. Next ANGELO CATTANEO (Lisbon) presented his research on a little-- known, and so far unexplored geographical compilation preserved in an anonymous 15th-century-- manuscript of the BNM, MS It. -

This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution International License (CC BY). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Abstract We present here evidence of pre-Portuguese presence in the Azores Islands, Portugal, found near the site of Grota do Medo (Posto Santo), discovered by Rodrigues (2013) in Terceira Island, Azores. This evidence was dated by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry, and indicates the presence of human activity in Terceira Island before or during the XIth century. The evidence consisted in a man-made rock basin, which was found in a site that contains also striking similarities with many other as- pects from ancient cultures, including other man-made rock basins, arrangements of large stones which resemble megalithic constructions, and inscriptions in stones which resemble ancient pe- troglyphs. Although the dating of this evidence is highly suggestive of the presence of human ac- tivity in the Azores Islands long before the arrival of the Portuguese navigators of the XVth century, there is no clear evidence which enables us to identify which specific culture may have existed in the Azores before the Portuguese arrival. -

As expedições de Cadamosto (1) e de Diogo Gomes (2) haviam levado ao reino uma verdadeira "Aleluia" . Por elas Portugal pôde recolher preciosos informes sôbre os caminhos do ouro, ao mesmo tempo que estabeleceu em sólidas linhas contacto regular com os aldeiamentos mandingas do Senegal e do Gâmbia. Os próprios cronistas e viajantes árabes não ti- nham logrado traçar com precisão os mecanismos da troca e a procedência do rico metal amarelo que os portuguêses, ago- ra, desviavam para o Atlântico. O "ESMERALDO DE SITU ORBIS" DE DUARTE PACHECO PEREIRA NA HISTÓRIA DA CULTURA (*) . E' um fato incontestável que a História de Portugal, e até a História da Civilização Ibérica, avultam na História Uni- versal mercê dos Descobrimentos Marítimos e da Expansão dos séculos XV e XVI. Só os Descobrimentos e a Expansão puderam ter dado origem a algo de inteiramente nôvo na His- tória da Humanidade que tenha provindo de Portugal. Do primeiro quartel ao fim do século XV os portuguêses levam a cabo esta série de emprêsas, destinadas a revolucionar tôda a História da Humanidade . Uma nova literatura surge, graças a esta extraordinária aventura humana . Literatura a que poderemos chamar — se empregarmos esta palavra num sentido bem amplo e genérico — Literatura Portuguêsa de Via- gens. As primeiras emprêsas de descobrimento remontam ao pri- meiro quartel do século XV. As primeiras obras desta litera- tura surgem por meados dêste mesmo século. A consciência retarda sôbre a vida. Para que não sejamos levados a debruçar-nos sôbre uma longa e enfadonha lista de nomes e de títulos, concentremos as nossas atenções numa amostra que nos parece suficientemente representativa, e que nos é dada por aquilo a que poderemos chamar a Literatura Portuguêsa de Viagens da Época dos Des- cobrImentos, isto é, a Literatura Portuguêsa de Viagens da se- gunda metade do século XV e primeiros anos do século XVI. Mais precisamente: a Literatura Portuguêsa de Viagens que se estende de 1453, data de redação por Gomes Eanes de Zurara da Crônica dos feitos de Guiné, até 1508, data em que Duarte Pacheco Pereira abandonou inacabada a redação do seu Esme- raldo de situ orbis. -

He received a B.A. in Art History from Oberlin College in 1996 and a M.A. in Art History from the University of Chicago in 1997. His master’s thesis, “The Accademia degli Oziosi: Spanish Power and Neapolitan Culture in Southern Italy, c. 1600-50,” was written under the supervision of Ingrid D. Rowland and Thomas Cummins. Before coming to Brown, Mario worked as a free-lance editor for La Rivista dei Libri and served on the editorial staff of the New York Review of Books. He also worked on the curatorial staff of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum where he translated the exhibition catalogue Raphael, Cellini and a Renaissance Banker: The Patronage of Bindo Altoviti (Milan: Electa, 2003) and curated the exhibition Off the Wall: New Perspectives on Early Italian Art in the Gardner Museum (2004). While at Brown, Mario has received financial support from the Graduate School, the Department of History of Art and Architecture, and the Program in Renaissance and Early Modern Studies. From 2005-2006, he worked in the Department of Prints, Drawings and Photographs at the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design. In 2007-2008, he received the J. M.
