Our one-of-a kind charity has been sustained for many years thanks to the incredible generosity of the many caring horsemen and women in the thoroughbred racing industry. Belmont Child Care Association’s Anna House was built to create a safe and nurturing environment for the children of backstretch workers at , Aqueduct Race Track, and , and Bright Horizons was engaged to operate an early childhood education and development program to teach our children English and provide them with the fundamental learning blocks that most of us take for granted. Following graduation from Anna House, our children enter kindergarten in the local public schools at the same level as their peers. Our graduates now join us in our school-age enrichment program before school, on the weekends, and during vacations. Thanks to our Olivia’s Herd after-school program, they are provided with free tutoring during elementary school and middle school. Anna House is open 365 days a year to accommodate the schedules of the backstretch workers, and BCCA also funds several programs for children in Saratoga during the summer meet. Over the past five years, BCCA has worked to make its mark in the community, and we are now the proud recipients of grant funding from local and state governments, family foundations, and individual and corporate donors. We receive much needed in-kind donations through our many community partners, and we are most grateful for their support of our incredible programs. BCCA inspires a love of learning and we are proud to see our children receive accolades in school. Many of them are on the honor roll, identified as leaders in their classrooms, praised for their mutual respect of tolerance and diversity, and rewarded for their talents in music, art, and dance. We teach them the importance of giving back to the community, and they volunteer their time on projects to assist those in need. As our students have advanced, our new women’s literacy program has provided our mothers with an enhanced confidence level as they establish closer bonds with their children while reading to them in English at home each evening. To assist in achieving our fundraising goals we are now offering a gift when donations are made at our special events: a chic BCCA scarf that spells out the word “children” in nautical letters among equestrian imagery. And our annual magazine provides content about our organization and the thoroughbred racing industry. We are truly making progress year after year and changing lives at the racetrack every day!

A Message from our President, Libby Imperio

Welcome back to First Out of the Gate! PROGRESS is the word of the year! We have been busy at Belmont Child Care Association fulfilling our mission to provide a safe and nurturing environment for the children of the backstretch. While the babies and toddlers learn to crawl, walk, and talk, our pre-kindergarten kids are busy learning their letters and numbers, and developing critical social skills such as how to share and play well with others. Our PROGRESS is apparent in the school-age classrooms where our program has grown to serve almost 30 young graduates of Anna House. They come to us before and after school as well as on school holidays; thanks to generous donations we were able to take the children on outings this past year, including trips to see Phantom of the Opera and Frozen on Broadway. PROGRESS is working together with our board of directors, exploring ways to expand our programs to help as many of the backstretch families as possible. I’m especially proud of two of them that serve the parents of our kids. The Women’s Literacy program, made possible by the New York Women’s Foundation and Charlotte Weber, has grown from four to 30 mothers; and the ABC’s of Life provides adult education on finance, banking, immigration, health, and nutrition as well as parenting seminars. Last, but far from least, our biggest area of PROGRESS is fulfilling a long-term dream of having our own building in Saratoga. We are pleased to report that we are planning to break ground on our new facility in late 2020! Without the generosity of you, our amazing donors, none of this would be possible. Stay tuned to see what progress continues to develop out of our gates.

Now four years old, Tonancy has grown accustomed to waking up at 4:30 AM, seven days a week, so her mom can begin work at 5:45 AM. While Tonancy is playing and learning at Anna House , Nancy is busy at work, walking up to five horses for exercise. In addition to walking the horses, she is in charge of cutting carrots and other vegetables for the horses, folding horse blankets, and cleaning their bridle chains. Nancy’s husband also works at Belmont and gets to work even earlier, cleaning the stables and washing the horses. When her shift is over at 11AM, Nancy picks up Tonancy and they head home to meet dad for lunch. This is where Nancy’s other jobs of homemaker, wife, and mother begin. For Pamela Andrade, working on the Belmont backstretch has been a family affair. Her parents have worked with the horses for

Pamela now has a family of her own. Her four daughters, who range in age from four to nine years old, have been students at Anna House since they were just weeks old. Like Nancy and her family, Pamela and her girls get up before the sun rises. The girls put out their clothes the night before to make the 3:45 AM wake-up a little less chaotic. Pamela’s kids have been praised by their teachers for entering school fully ready to learn —an attestation to the quality of the education at Anna House. In addition to the solid curriculum, BCCA has provided resources to Pamela and her family throughout the years including backpacks with school supplies, school uniforms, and homework help twice a week. Anna House has been such a big part of their lives since infancy that the girls say they miss it when they have a day off. As busy as their lives are, Nancy, Pamela, and many of the other mothers who work on the backstretch return to Anna House later in the afternoon (children in tow) for special adult programs. Literacy classes are offered Pamela and her daughter, Melissa to improve English grammar, reading, writing, and everyday conversation, as are parenting classes where moms learn about their children’s social and emotional development and how to handle common challenges— all while their children are being cared for in another classroom. The moms are grateful that Anna House provides them with multiple resources to balance work and family life. special aspect of the horse- racingA community is its ability to create collaboration and camaraderie within a highly competitive industry. As a designer, I was thinking about how I might leverage that positive characteristic to help nonprofits, when coincidentally I was approached by Jennifer Marcellus, the owner of Miss Scarlett Boutique in Saratoga Springs, about a potential partnership. Jen’s fashion background, which includes manufacturing, led us to countless hours discussing fashion, art, team spirit, and the fun of racing. We became interested in how we might create accessories to mobilize people around a common purpose. How could we make BCCA scarf that spells out the word “children” in people feel part of the sport while supporting nautical letters among equestrian imagery a cause connected to the racing industry? These two custom-designed scarves have a hidden message behind the colorful squares on the BCCA silks: CHILDREN is spelled out in a nautical alphabet. BCCA does a great job making sure we give our backstretch children a healthy start and equipping them with the academic tools they need to succeed. Partnering with them to achieve their goals has been exceptionally rewarding, not to mention very fun! I’m proud to add it to our online collection of unique horse-racing gifts and clothing at Chateauducheval.com. I hope to see many people sporting a BCCA silk scarf, a fashionable sign that you love racing and support the children of our backstretch. Valerie and her partner, Jennifer Marcellus

48 2019 Spring Fling Honoree

The Garden City Chapter of NCL, Inc. was founded in 2016 by Garden City resident and mom, Michelle Myers. Since it’s initial Kickoff, they have maintained over 250 members per year and donated over 11,000 volunteer hours across their more than 15 charity partnerships. Through the past three years, Belmont Childcare has been close to their heart. Of the events NCL’s members share with BCCA, among the very favorites are serving as elves at the Holiday Shopping event, tutoring on weekdays for the school-aged children and making Easter baskets for them. NCL has provided over 1,200 service hours to Belmont thus far and cannot wait to see how the partnership grows.

49 2019 Spring Fling Honoree Angela Susan Anton

Susan Angela Anton is a powerhouse on Long Island. She is the publisher and CEO of the Anton Media Group, the largest privately held collection of community newspapers in New York State. Noted for her philanthropy, Anton’s mission is to give voice to often overlooked organizations and community members. “Growing up on Long Island, I feel it is important for business leaders to give back to their communities.” Recently, Anton was honored by the Alzheimer Foundation. She also participated in a fundraising fashion show for The Safe Center’s Walk in Her Shoes, supporting victims of domestic violence and child abuse. Since 2013 Anton has been actively involved with BCCA, as co-chair of the annual Spring Fling Hat Luncheon and also a member of the advisory board. Known throughout Nassau County for her philanthropy, generosity and hard work, Anton has received numerous citations from the county executives and town supervisors. She is also the recipient of the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor. A familiar face at many Long Island events and charities Anton epitomizes the best qualities of a local business leader. Not the least of her accomplishments: Anton is the proud mother of three wonderful children, Jonathan, Kristen and Drew.
