McGurk 2009 1 The Rochester Sentinel 2008 Tuesday, January 1, 2008 No Paper-Holiday Wednesday, January 2, 2008 Donna Jean Bowyer Dec. 22, 1936 – Dec. 31, 2007 Donna Jean BOWYER, 71, New Carlisle, formerly of Rochester, passed away at 1 p.m. Monday at Miller’s Merry Manor, New Carlisle. Donna was born on Dec. 22, 1036, in Rochester to Art and Helen Louise (Toby) Thompson. Donna Jean enjoyed playing bingo and bowling. She loved her horses and cats. She was previously employed with American Rubber in LaPorte, Dee’s Truck Stop in Rolling Prairie and had retired from Easy Heat in New Carlisle. In 1956, in Rochester, as Donna Jean Thompson, she married Junior Bowyer, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Patty (Bill) Kingery of Fulton, and Lorraine (Larry) Norman of Akron; one brother, Dave Thompson of Rochester; and by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Joan Hudkins. Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern time today in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 201 S. Filbert St., New Carlisle. Friends may also call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester. Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, with Dr. Mark Spencer officiating. Friends also may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place in the Odd Fellows 2 Cemetery, Rochester. Arrangements are pending at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester. Glenn E. Hendrick Sr. Glenn E. HEDRICK Sr., 75, of 2241 E. 450 North, Rochester, died Dec. 22 at home. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Senters, Baxley, Ga., and Lisa Wiles, Fort Pierce, Fla., and a son, Glenn Hedrick Jr., Fort Pierce, Fla. A private family service will be conducted. Good Family Funeral Home, Rochester, is handling arrangements. Barbara L. Miller Barbara L. MILLER, 80, of 501 Pennsylvania Ave., Plymouth, died at 5:45 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth. Arrangements are pending at Earl-Grossman Funeral Home, Argos. Charles William ‘Bill’ Donathen Feb. 1, 1926 – Dec. 30, 2007 Services for Charles W. “Bill” DONATHEN, 81, Kewanna, will be at Kewanna Church of Christ, 116 S. Logan St., on Thursday at 11 a.m. Bill passed away in the company of loved ones Sunday at Pulaski Health Care Center, Winamac. Born Feb. 1, 1926, in Mishawaka, he was the son of the late Charles and Elizabeth (Emmans) Donathen. Bill was married to Eileen D. Hollis on Nov. 9, 1947. She preceded him in death on March 30, 2006. 3 Bill was a United States Navy veteran serving in World War II. He was employed with Bendix in South Bend for more than 30 years. He also farmed throughout his lifetime. Bill was a member and elder of Kewanna Church of Christ. He was a 1944 Kewanna High School graduate, where he played basketball and was a member of many organizations including Order of Eastern Star, Chapter No. 70, Rochester, and was former Worthy Patron of the Kewanna Chapter, UAW South Bend Local and Grange organization. He was a past Master of the Kewanna Masonic Lodge, received his 32nd degree in Scottish Rite, and continued to be a faithful member of the Rochester F&AM No. 79 after they merged. Bill was an active Republican Precinct Committeeman and former member of Union Township/Kewanna School Board. He was a former EMT and was one of the first drivers for the Kewanna EMS. Bill and Eileen spent 17 winters in Florida. They met new friends and had great times. They shared these years with their lifelong friends, Bill and Marilyn Moon. Bill and Eileen bowled as couples. Bill was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching the Colts, baseball and golf. He won the “Best Beard” contest at the Kewanna Bicentennial. Vacations were important to Bill and his family. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed camping with friends. Bill and Eileen enjoyed many travels with Dream Tours. Family was the most important thing to Bill as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved family gatherings and was devoted to proudly attending the various activities of his children and grandchildren. Bill is survived by one daughter, Susan and her husband, Kenneth, Hamman, Winamac; two sons, Larry Donathen and his wife, Joyce, Franklin, and Jon Donathen and his wife, Diana, Grass Creek; five grandchildren, Amy and Douglas Smith, Amanda Donathen, Alexander and Matthew Donathen; two great-grandchildren, Andriana Smith and Aidan Smith; one brother Robert Engle and his wife, Barbara; sister-in-law, Violet Troutman; and several nieces and 4 nephews. Preceding him in death are two sisters, JoAnn and Sally; his mother, father and stepfather. Pastors Scott Meneely and William Moon will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Citizens IOOF Cemetery, Kewanna, where full military rites will be conducted. Calling will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Harrison-Metzger & Rans Funeral Home, Kewanna, with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call one hour before the service at the church on Thursday. Iva Irene Brower Oct. 8, 1918 – Jan. 2, 2008 Iva Irene BROWER, 89, of 1502 Mitchell Drive, Rochester, passed away at 9:50 a.m. Wednesday at Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester. She was born on Oct. 8, 1918, in Marion, the daughter of Clarence and Lulu (Bates) Rook. She married Everett Brower on May 24, 1941, in Marion. He preceded her in death in 1980. Mrs. Brower worked for the Kroger Milk Plant, The Radio and Shoe Factory in Marion, Akron Cafe and Arter Drugstore in Akron. She attended the First Christian Church, Marion, and First Baptist Church, Rochester. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, fishing, and was an avid gardener and loved big band music and dancing. Survivors include her son, Daniel A. and wife Wanda Brower, Rochester; six grandchildren, Roger and wife Pam Brower, Akron, Steve Brower, Akron, Dan and wife Sarah Brower, Fort Wayne, Christine and husband Ken Kneifel, Rochester, Greg Mow, Rochester, Gary and wife Becky Mow, Rochester; 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Glendora Titus, Marion, LaVonne Mauller, Marion, Pat Huegal, South Bend; sister-in-law, Mary Rook, Marion; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Clarence Rook Jr., Wallace Rook; and sisters, Betty Rix and Neidra Nelson. Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester, with Dr Mark Spencer officiating. Burial will be in the Akron Cemetery, Akron. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the service Saturday at the funeral home. Edington Sept. 17, 1928 – Jan. 2, 2008 Beloved father, brother, uncle and friend, George W. EDINGTON, 79, of 721 Madison St., Rochester, passed away at 1:50 a.m. Wednesday at Memorial Hospital, South Bend. He was born on Sept. 17, 1928, in Pulaski County, the son of William and Mable (Irvin) Edington. George was a U.S. Navy and U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. After the war, George returned to Rochester where he spent his entire life. After retirement from Burns Construction in 1989, George enjoyed helping out at Webb’s Pharmacy. He spent a great deal of time uptown because it made him happy to be around others and making friends. George always looked forward to his trips to New Mexico and California to spend time with family.
