Interaction and Social Complexity in Lingnan during the First Millennium B.C. FRANCIS ALLARD SEPARATED FROM AREAS north of it by mountain ranges and drained by a single river system, the region of Lingnan in southeastern China is a distinct physio graphic province (Fig. 1). The home of historically recorded tribes, it was not until the late first millennium B.C. that Lingnan was incorporated into the ex panding Chinese polities of central and northern China. The Qin, Han, and probably the Chu before them not only knew of those they called barbarians in southeastern China but also pursued an expansionary policy that would help es tablish the boundaries of the modem Chinese state in later times. The first millennium B.C. in Lingnan witnessed the development of a bronze metallurgy and its subsequent widespread use by the seventh or sixth centuries B.C. Archaeological work over the last decades has led to the discovery of a num ber ofBronze Age burials scattered over much of northern Lingnan and dating to approximately 600 to 200 B.C., a period covering the middle-late Spring and Autumn period and all of the Warring States period (Fig. 2). These important discoveries have helped establish the region as the theater for the emergence of social complexity before the arrival of the Qin and Han dynasties in Lingnan. Nevertheless, and in keeping with traditional models of interpretation, Chinese archaeologists have tried to understand this material in the context of contact with those expanding states located to the north of Lingnan. The elaborate ma terial culture and complex political structures associated with these states has usually meant that change in those so-called peripheral areas (including Lingnan) could only be the result of cultural diffusion from the center. -

Introduction The China Water Beetle Survey currently is celebrating its 10th anniversary. The first joint expedition, which launched the CWBS co-operation project of the Natural History Museum Vienna (Section of Coleoptcrology) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Institute of Applied Ecology, Shenyang), was carried out in autumn 1993. Since then, samples were taken from almost 500 aquatic habitats, and three volumes of the WATER BEETLES OF CHINA, containing numerous taxonomic revisions and accurate distribution maps, were published (see also JÄCH&JI 1995, 1998). Today, China cannot be regarded any more as "terra incognita" in terms of aquatic coleoptera. About 200 new species, eight new genera and one new family were described since 1993. During these 10 fruitful years, faunistic and ecological surveys were carried out in the following provinces (PR), autonomous regions (AR), municipalities directly under the Central Government (M), and special administrative regions (SAR) of Mainland China: Anhui (PR), Beijing (M), Fujian (PR), Gansu (PR), Guangdong (PR), Guangxi (AR), Guizhou (PR), Hainan (PR), Hong Kong (SAR), Hunan (PR), Jiangxi (PR), Jilin (PR), Liaoning (PR), Macao (SAR), Nei Mongol (AR), Shaanxi (PR), Shandong (PR), Sichuan (PR), Yunnan (PR), Zhcjiang (PR). -

NWS Holdings disposes of 13 road and bridge projects in Zhaoqing at HK$1.168 Billion (17 November 2003 — Hong Kong) NWS Holdings Limited (“NWS Holdings” or “the Group” 659.HK) today announced that the Group had entered into agreements with Zhaoqing Highway Development Ltd. ( 肇慶市公路發展總公司 “ZHD”) for the disposal of 13 road and bridge projects in Zhaoqing (“Road and Bridge Projects”) at an aggregate consideration of approximately HK$1.168 billion. The aggregate consideration for the disposal of the Road and Bridge Projects will be payable in cash by ZHD by three installments. The first installment of HK$958 million is payable before 1 January 2004. The second installment of HK$90 million is payable before 1 March 2004 and the last installment of HK$120 million will be paid before 1 June 2004. Payment for the consideration shall be made principally in Hong Kong dollars. Based on the unaudited management accounts of the 13 joint venture companies for the year ended 30 June 2003 (prepared in accordance with the generally accepted accounting policies in Hong Kong), the aggregate net asset value amounts to RMB724 million (approximately HK$677 million). The gain from the disposal will be booked in the Group’s account for the financial year ending 30 June 2004. Commenting on the disposal, Dr. Cheng Kar Shun, Henry, Chairman of NWS Holdings said, “As part of our strategies to create value for shareholders, we dispose of under-performing projects and re-invest in new ones that can offer more attractive returns. Since it was launched in October 2011, the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) sensor on the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) Satellite has become a new satellite used to monitor nighttime light. This study performed the first evaluation on the NPP-VIIRS nighttime light imagery in modeling economy, analyzing 31 provincial regions and 393 county regions in China. For each region, the total nighttime light (TNL) and gross regional product (GRP) around the year of 2010 were derived, and a linear regression model was applied on the data. -

Facing the new situation and task of thoroughly reforming and duty transformation, as well as the opportunities and challenges brought by the revised Trademark Law, Trademark staff in AICs at all levels followed the arrangement of SAIC and got new achievements by carrying out trademark strategy and taking innovation on trademark practice, theory and mechanism. ——Trademark examination and review achieved great progress. In 2013, trademark applications increased to 1.8815 million, with a year-on-year growth of 14.15%, reaching a new record in the history and keeping the highest a mount of the world for consecutive 12 years. Under the pressure of trademark examination, Trademark Office and TRAB of SAIC faced the difficuties positively, and made great efforts on soloving problems. Trademark Office and TRAB of SAIC optimized the examination procedure, properly allocated examiners, implemented the mechanism of performance incentive, and carried out the “double-points” management. As a result, the Office examined 1.4246 million trademark applications, 16.09% more than last year. The examination period was maintained within 10 months, and opposition period was shortened to 12 months, which laid a firm foundation for performing the statutory time limit. —— Implementing trademark strategy with a shift to effective use and protection of trademark by law. -
