Led by U.S. Conference of Mayors President Miami Mayor Manny Diaz, over 60 mayors will also meet with Attorney General Eric H. Holder, Jr., Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, Energy Secretary Dr. Steven Chu, Education Secretary Arne Duncan and White House Senior Staff. The mayors meeting with President Obama and Vice President Biden will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. in the East Room of the White House and will be OPEN to the press. The mayors will also hold a press availability at the White House at 11:30 a.m. immediately following the meeting (location is TBD). Ridgway Center The Matthew B. Ridgway Center for International Security Studies at the University of Pittsburgh is dedicated to producing original and impartial analysis that informs policymakers who must confront diverse challenges to international and human security. Center programs address a range of security concerns—from the spread of terrorism and technologies of mass destruction to genocide, failed states, and the abuse of human rights in repressive regimes. The Ridgway Center is affiliated with the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA) and the University Center for International Studies (UCIS), both at the University of Pittsburgh. The Ford Institute for Human Security is a constituent unit of the Ridgway Center. This working paper is a product of the Ford Institute for Human Security’s working group on “Immigration, Integration and Security: Europe and America in Comparative Perspective,” co-chaired by Ariane Chebel d’Appollonia and Simon Reich. Sex is not without its advantages Now that the baseball season in town is effectively over, cook up a good local sex scandal or two to divert attention away from these far more serious issues. Sanderson As Chicago's homicide rate and Illinois' pension crisis continue to garner national media attention and spiral out of control, our city and state politicians are Nero-like in their responses. We need some bold action, or at least diversion, and soon, or we risk sinking even lower on the political radar screen — we are only fifth in state population and thanks to Toronto, we are now the fifth-largest city in North America. The "flyover" section of our country has a lot to learn from the coasts — and even abroad. Thus I offer this humble suggestion: Now that the baseball season in town is effectively over, cook up a good local sex scandal or two to divert attention away from these far more serious issues. I'm not asking for an Anthony Weiner on any given day. And not even a John Edwards. But can't we at least produce in this city and state someone on the order of Eliot Spitzer or Silvio Berlusconi? I'd even settle for Mark Sanford or David Vitter. Sure, we have had more than our fair share of high-profile felons — former Govs. Rod Blagojevich, George Ryan, Dan Walker, Otto Kerner. But for what? Corruption, racketeering, bribery, fraud. Boring stuff. Where were the sexting emails, prostitutes, strippers, mistresses, photos of a blue dress or the Appalachian Trail? Our about-one-scandal-per-year Chicago aldermen have gotten their three squares a day at the public trough for the mundane: corruption, bribery, tax evasion. -

With the successful end of the first phase of their "journey of tears," they began the next phase of social and cultural adaptation within the more comfortable boundaries of Little Italy. The evidence from World Values Survey data Arno Tausch Abstract 1) Background: This paper addresses the return of religious Antisemitism by a multivariate analysis of global opinion data from 28 countries. 2) Methods: For the lack of any available alternative we used the World Values Survey (WVS) Antisemitism study item: rejection of Jewish neighbors. It is closely correlated with the recent ADL-100 Index of Antisemitism for more than 100 countries. To test the combined effects of religion and background variables like gender, age, education, income and life satisfaction on Antisemitism, we applied the full range of multivariate analysis including promax factor analysis and multiple OLS regression. 3) Results: Although religion as such still seems to be connected with the phenomenon of Antisemitism, intervening variables such as restrictive attitudes on gender and the religion-state relationship play an important role. Western Evangelical and Oriental Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism are performing badly on this account, and there is also a clear global North-South divide for these phenomena. 4) Conclusions: Challenging patriarchic gender ideologies and fundamentalist conceptions of the relationship between religion and state, which are important drivers of Antisemitism, will be an important task in the future. Multiculturalism must be aware of prejudice, patriarchy and religious fundamentalism in the global South. -

Fact Sheet April 2016 Immigrants and WIOA Services Comparison of Sociodemographic Characteristics of Native- and Foreign-Born Adults in New York City, New York By Margie McHugh and Madeleine Morawski 1 This fact sheet provides a profile of key characteristics of foreign-born and native-born residents of New York City that are relevant to understanding needs for adult education and workforce training services. It is part of a largerWorkforce series of Innovationstate and county and Opportunity fact sheets producedAct by the Migration Policy Institute’s (MPI) National Center on Immigrant Integration Policy to support equitable implementation of the (WIOA), as well as consideration of other policy and funding initiatives to promote the successful linguistic, economic, and civic integration of immigrants and refugees who have settled in the United States. The estimates provided are based on MPI analysis of U.S. Census Bureau American Commu- nity Survey (ACS) data pooled over the 2010-14 period in order to provide the most detailed sociodemographic portrait possible of residents’ characteristics. Mirroring the design of ACTS federal adult education and workforce training program rules, data are provided for those ages 16 and over. F 1) Nativity, Age, and Origin of New York City Residents ON I As of 2010-14, New York City was home to more than 6.7 million residents ages 16 and older; nearly 3 million of whom, or 44 percent, were foreign born. Relatively fewer of the city’s for- eign-born individuals are ages 16-18 or ages 19-24 as compared to its native-born residents; GRAT rather, they are more likely to be in their prime working years, with 68 percent falling in the I 25-to-44 and 45-to-59 age bands (compared to 58 percent of those who are native born). -

INTRODUCTION All political scientists who study education policy start their analysis with a similar premise: “educational reform does not take place in political vacuum.”1 Studies of the politics of school choice have focused primarily on state-level political dynamics (Mintrom 2000, Henig, et. al. 2002, Wong & Shen 2004). This line of research makes sense since the charter school market is initially created and subsequently altered by the state legislature. In this paper, however, we break from this trend and focus our attention on local government and the politics of school choice. Specifically, we examine the relationship between school choice and big city mayors. Our preliminary analysis finds that mayoral positions on school choice is influenced not only the existing legislation governing school choice in their city, but also by their city’s size and racial composition. Although the state legislature writes the charter school or voucher laws, mayors play important roles in the legislative and policy enactment process. At the legislative level, mayors can influence the type of laws that are enacted by working with state legislators and lobbying for more choice options.
