Oh how I’d love to participate in face- to-face meetings and see the friends I’ve made over the past seven years as a member of the Chap- ter. Irene and I have always felt so welcome at our events and enjoyed the camaraderie of the mem- bers. The pandemic has made it impossible for us to get together unless we stay in our cars and are six feet away from one another while wearing masks. There were two times when we were able to see each other but I only made it to the one at Seneca Creek Park. It was fun and sparsely attended as we expected. Nevertheless it was fun. As you know from previous “Commanders” I didn’t make it to the tour out in western Virginia but enough members did to make it a success under the pandemic conditions.

They may have failed to save their creators, but they succeeded by becoming the sort of delightfully obscure automotive exotica that inspires and motivates collectors. “Creating a class of orphan concept cars is the kind of thing we just can’t resist,” said Mark Becker, Vice-Chairman of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, “Amelia’s 20 th anniversary Orphans Concept Class shows an industry on instruments, changing course, almost overnight, from a wartime economy to a new consumer economy that none could have imagined or predicted.” As usual General Motors led the way with their travelling Motorama shows of the 1950s. But the economic realities of the early 21 st century forced even mighty GM to shed the once creative and profitable Pontiac and Oldsmobile Divisions. The 1963 Pontiac X-400 is a modified production car rather than the usual, clean-sheet Motorama creation. By the 1960s Pontiac had finally shed its once stodgy image to become GM’s high performance division. The Grand Prix-based, supercharged 421 ci V-8 X-400 convertible was conceived and executed as the ultimate Pontiac. Before Pontiac’s potent and legendary GTO, the X-400 was a performance bulls-eye that set the tone for Pontiac in the sixties and seventies. Things were different in the other hemispheres of Detroit’s Big Three carmakers.

I believe Rick said that Studebaker was the most prevalent marque at the show. As Rick no longer wants to chair the show he is looking for others to step up. The Opel Club has volunteered to help, but wants to co-host with another club. It was brought up that the North Georgia Club may be willing to be that co-host. I think that we need to discuss this at our June meeting along with the hosting of the next State Meet. We need as many of our members to be present for this discussion and vote. Other business that we need to discuss will be a Club golf type shirt and how many are interested. We also need to start a new meeting calendar for the 2009. As I look at the Club Meetings and the Other Event Opportunities, it looks like we are going to have a busy summer.

His father, Bill, designed the transporter for the Saturn V first stage as part of the Apollo program. His wife is Susan and he is the father of Dillon and Chad. He has 2 brothers and a sister. He earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering at Oakland Univer- sity while maintaining a 3.8 GPA, graduating in 1985. He owned a 72 acre farm before moving into a Victorian style house on only 4 acres. As a helicopter pilot he has flown Batman around and he ran into burning buildings as a firefighter for the Chesaning Brady Fire Dept Station 1. (We found no record of him leaping tall buildings or being faster than a speeding bullet.) He owns Heliflite Heliport (MI46) and is a fight instructor. He has used his fight skills in conducting high school programs about aerodynamics. He just retired from GM as an Engineering Group Manager working with a focus on chassis systems. He has his name on at least 4 US Patents. He is the owner and restorer of an award winning 1923 Stu- debaker Light Six.     Packard Motor Car Company Headquarters; Detroit, Michigan, U.S. Source: Wikipedia History 1899–1905 Packard was founded by James Ward Packard, his brother William and their partner, George Lewis Weiss, in the city of Warren, Ohio, where 400 Packard automobiles were built at their factory on Dana Street Northeast, from 1899 to 1903. A mechanical engineer, James Packard believed they could build a better horseless carriage than the Winton cars owned by Weiss, an important Winton stockholder, after Packard complained to Alexander Winton and offered suggestions for improvement, which were ignored. Packard's first car was built in Warren, Ohio, on November 6, 1899. Henry Bourne Joy, a member of one of Detroit's oldest and wealthiest families, bought a Packard. Impressed by its reliability, he visited the Packards and soon enlisted a group of investors—including Truman Handy Newberry and Russell A. Alger Jr. On October 2, 1902, this group refinanced and renamed the New York and Ohio Automobile Company as the Packard Motor Car Company, with James Packard as president. Alger later served as vice president. Packard moved operations to Detroit soon after, and Joy became general manager (and later chairman of the board). An original Packard, reputedly the first manufactured, was donated by a grateful James Packard to his alma mater, Lehigh University, and is preserved there in the Packard Laboratory. Another is on display at the Packard Museum in Warren, Ohio. In the beginning, all Packards had a single-cylinder engine until 1903. Packard vehicles featured innovations, including the modern steering wheel and, years later, the first production 12-cylinder engine, adapted from developing the Liberty L-12, and air- conditioning in a passenger car.
