The idea that mental illness is shameful grew out of fear and ignorance about its causes, effects and treatments. Today, we know more about brain chemistry and its disturbances than ever before, yet stigma around mental illness persists.

In 1997, Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services took a lead role in sparking positive conversations about mental illness by honoring Tipper Gore at its first Erasing the Stigma Leadership Awards.

Darrell and Jordana Steinberg - A former California Senate President pro tempore, Mr. Steinberg coauthored the California Mental Health Services Act (Proposition 63) in 2004, which has funded mental health care services for more than six million Californians. His daughter, 20-year-old Jordana has struggled with mental illness since childhood and speaks openly about her illness, inspiring others to overcome stigma and ask for help.

It is with great honor that I join in recognizing the following honorees: Ryan Anderson, Mary Lambert, Howie Mandel, and Darrell & Jordana Steinberg. All of these individuals have risen above their own circumstances and set the bar high as leaders for this important issue.

Mental health is a critical issue that affects us all. There are no boundaries and, for that reason, we must join forces to address the stigma and help those in need. On behalf of the City of Los Angeles and the Ninth Council District, It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 19th Annual Erasing the Stigma Leadership Awards hosted by Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services.

For over 70 years, Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services has transformed lives by providing quality mental health care and substance abuse services. With 11 sites throughout the city, and operating in nearly 100 schools, this agency has helped over 90,000 adults and children throughout Southern California. Its Suicide Prevention Center was the first in the nation to provide 24/7 crisis counseling, assisting over 55,000 callers annually and providing support services as needed.

I join with you today in congratulating this year’s honorees:

Ryan Anderson – An NBA standout and New Orleans Pelicans forward, he has been a passionate advocate for suicide prevention following the devastating loss of his girlfriend, actress and model Gia Allemand.

Mary Lambert – A singer-songwriter who has addressed her experience with bipolar disorder in her song “Secrets” and speaks out against the stigma of mental illness.
