During the summer of 2000, Danny then took a real shot at standup comedy through a dare from his high school friends. Like any hormonal/prideful teenager, Danny took the dare and performed at the nearest open mic night competition which happened to be a café in South Central LA. To make a long story short, Danny did well enough to win the competition. Being bit by the comedy bug, Danny started performing stand-up during his stay at UCLA. He performed shows at the Laugh Factory and the Improv, both in Hollywood. However, through the pressures of his conservative parents, Danny joined the corporate world as a business consultant. Nevertheless, he still performed comedy at shows all over Southern California and occasionally at out of state universities. In 2006, while still working as a business consultant, Danny had his first national tv acting gig on Mad TV. Danny played Pongo, a fat/mute Thai movie critic alongside Bobby Lee. Danny played that character for several episodes on Mad TV. In 2007, Danny hated his career as a business consultant so much that he quit. He hated the job so much he would go to the local bar and drink so much hoping to get a DUI so he can miss work. He decided that he needed to be a full time comedian and actor. Danny recently was in a Bud Light Commercial, which aired during the SuperBowl. He played an Asian foreign exchange student that tries to hit on American girls. Initially, Danny was afraid that this character would set back the progress that Asians Americans were making in the media, but the hunger and bills outweighed that worry and he took the gig. In the last few years, Danny has been in various commercials and tv shows, and movies. He has a reoccurring role on Parks and Recreation, as China Joe. In addition, Danny has been traveling around the US for his stand up comedy tour. Recently, Danny wrote a screenplay titled Ktown Cowboys, that was accepted to the South by Southwest film festival in 2015. With an other feature in the works, Danny is still doing stand up all over the world and is gearing for his 2nd DVD special. He is definitely a must see! BILL COSBY Biography Bill Cosby is, by any standards, one of the most influential stars in America today. Whether it be through concert appearances or recordings, television or films, commercials or education, Bill Cosby has the ability to touch people’s lives. His humor often centers on the basic cornerstones of our existence, seeking to provide an insight into our roles as parents, children, family members, and men and women. Without resorting to gimmickry or lowbrow humor, Bill Cosby’s comedy has a point of reference and respect for the trappings and traditions of the great American humorists such as Mark Twain, Buster Keaton and Jonathan Winters. The 1984-92 run of The Cosby Show and his books Fatherhood and Time Flies established new benchmarks on how success is measured. His status at the top of the TVQ survey year after year continues to confirm his appeal as one of the most popular personalities in America. For his philanthropic efforts and positive influence as a performer and author, Cosby was honored with a 1998 Kennedy Center Honors Award. In 2002, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America’s highest civilian honor, was the 2009 recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor and the Marian Anderson Award. Outside of the rules and constraints of serious discourse and cultural production, these comedic corrections thrive on discursive and semiotic ambiguity and temporality. Comedic corrections offer alternate interpretations overlooked or silenced by hegemonic structures and operating modes of cultural common sense. The view that their effects are ephemeral and insignificant is an incomplete and misguided evaluation. Since this paper adopts Hegel’s understanding of comedy as the spirit (Geist) made material, its very constitution, and thus its power, resides in exposing the internal thought processes often left unexamined, bringing them into the foreground, dissecting them, and exposing them for ridicule and transformation. In essence, the work of comedy is to consider all points of human processing and related structuration as fair game. The phenomenological nature of comedy calls for a micro-level examination. Select examples from The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour (1968), The Richard Pryor Show (1977), Saturday Night Live (1990), and Chappelle’s Show (2003) will demonstrate representative ways that comedy attacks and transforms racial hegemony. Keywords: comedy, cultural sociology, popular culture, race and racism, resistance. During periods of social unrest, what micro-level actions are available to the public? Or, how does a particular society respond to inequities that are widely shared and agreed upon as intolerable aspects of a society? One popular method to challenge a hegemonic structure, and to survive it, is comedy.

Therefore, I am using this plat- form to address some issues that have come to my attention. Since the cost for out-of-town memberships to our Senior Center went up in January 2020, there have been a few miscon- ceptions that have come to my attention. First and foremost, the one rumor that I would definitely like to address is the story going around that the Prospect Town Council raised the dues of our out-of-town members because they are trying to “get rid” of the non-residents that come here. The story goes that the Town Council is trying to keep our Senior Center strictly for Prospect residents only. Nothing could be further from the truth. I value the out-of-town members who come here. I feel they have contributed significantly to the growth of our Senior Center. Many of these members run programs here and volun- teer in a number of different capacities. They are my lifeline and help me in ways that I could never repay them for. I and the Town Council members would never want to “get rid” of them. I will tell you point blank why the Town Council decided to raise membership dues for out- of-town members.

While the dissertation itself is an overwhelming feat, this acknowledgements section feels equally heavy. Expressing my gratitude and thanks for every person who has made this possiBle feels quite impossiBle. And as someone who once detested both school and writing, there’s a lot of people I am thankful for. It is a fact that I could not completed a PhD, let alone a dissertation, on my own. Graduate school wears you down, and especially one framed By the 2016 presidential election and 2020 uprisings, rise of white supremacy, and a gloBal pandemic, graduate school is really hard and writing is the last thing you want to do. While I’ve spent days going through mental lists of people and groups who’ve helped me, this is not a complete list and my sincere apologies to anyone I’ve forgotten. First and foremost, this dissertation would not be where it is today without the guidance and support of my advisors Jo Lee and Elliott Powell. The hours of advice and words of wisdom I received from you both not only shaped my project and affirmed its direction, but they also reminded me of the realistic expectations we should have for ourselves.
