    CARNIVAL BALL KREWE BORD de L’EAU Dear Parents, The Krewe Bord de L’eau Carnival Balls are themed celebrations held each year involving students from 1st through 12th grade who participate on a royal court. The couples who raise the most money will be named king and queen. All money raised is contributed toward the betterment and advancement of our school. Students from 1st grade to 8th grade participate in the Junior Court, and students in high school participate in the Senior Court. Students from PK4 to 12th grade also have the opportunity to dress in costume and perform for the two courts and all the audience in attendance. The Carnival Balls focus on music, dance, and visual arts; all components of the Arts taught here at Riverside Academy. Krewe Bord de L’eau originated in 1980 from an idea Mrs. Althea Cambre had to raise money for a new elementary building which is still used by students today. The Carnival Ball committee was, and still is, composed of dedicated volunteer faculty members, parents, grandparents, and students who organize and create the grandeur event for everyone to enjoy. This school year the Junior and Senior Carnival Balls will be held Friday, January 26, 2018 and Saturday, January 27, 2018. The entertainment participation letters have gone out for students to sign up. Being a part of this entertainment affair is one many students enjoy. We hope that you consider letting your student experience what this magnificent event is all about. We have openings for court members to participate in both the Junior and Senior courts.

    Best Buddies Prom Season: Spring Atmosphere: Gala What is the Best Buddies Prom? The Best Buddies Prom is two parties in one. The student portion is an alternative prom for all students in the Capital Region to attend with their fellow Best Buddies chapter members. The Best Buddies office provides multiple charter busses to transport students from across the region to Prom where they will enjoy music, great food, a photo booth and more. All for no more than $20 a ticket. Many students with IDD do not have the opportunity to attend their school proms, so this is their chance to party the night away with their friends in a safe, accepting atmosphere. The adult portion is a DC gala with a twist. The adult Prom is open to corporate and community supporters, parents, adult participants, chapter advisors and whomever else is interested in attending and able to cover the ticket price. There is always a silent and live auction with a wide variety of items to fit anyone’s interests. Attendees can also expect passed hors d’oevres, an open bar, music and dance floor for adults only. Sponsorships – There a multiple ways to sponsor Prom. Groups can donate a general amount, buy a block of tickets, donate auction items or work with the Best Buddies office to decide what works best for them. Auction Items – The Best Buddies development team works hard with the help of volunteers to secure auction items to present at prom. We try to present a wide variety of items that will appeal to many different tastes.

    Independence Banquet and Polonez Ball 100th Anniversary of Poland Regaining Independence There were nearly 200 guests at our Independence Banquet and Polonez Ball at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel. Mr. Robert Szydlowski was Master of Ceremony After the Polish and American anthems and the invocation by Rev. Hubert Zasada all were welcome by Dr. Wojciech Golik, Honorary Consul of Poland. His remarks were followed by Prof. Michal Rozbicki’s presentation “The Polish Cause – Sprawa Polska”. The program continued as follows. Four beautiful debutantes: Ms. Celina Cywinski, Ms. Emily Olmstead, Ms Gabriella Kauppila-Roeder, and Ms. Molly Roeder were presented by Mr. Edwin Brzezinski. Ms. Kathryn Mayer of the Alexandra Ballet danced exquisitely Chopin’s Prelude from Les Sylphides. Ms. Brittany Moleski sang wonderfully several Polish songs by Chopin, Moniuszko, and Rutkowski. She was expertly accompanied by Dr. Barbara Lamont on the piano. The songs were followed by Chopin’s Prelude Op.28 No 17 and Nocturne Op.9 No.4 memorably played by Dr. Andrzej Zahorski. Oginski’s Polonaise ended the artistic program. It was first beautifully and elaborately rendered by eight pairs of dancers who were then joined by many guests remembering the dance from their “studniowka” (the Polish prom) years. After the Polonaise the guests were entertained by the 17-player band, The Diz Strohman Big Badn from Edwardsville, IL. Our unforgettable ball lasted until midnight. The proms of today are lavish affairs that come complete with hotel ballrooms, live bands, glamorous clothing, and stretch limousines. As the first formal event in the life of a teenager, attendance at the prom is now popularly considered a vital rite of passage to adulthood. Yet, proms were not always so lavish, expensive, or widespread. At one point during their history, proms were actually quite simple affairs. Proms were first mentioned in the high school yearbooks of the 1930s and 1940s, but historians believe they may have existed as early as the late 1800s. Proms first began in the elite colleges of the Northeast, taking their cue from the debutante balls of the rich and well bred. Middle class parents admired the poise and composure of debutantes and their escorts and began to institute formal dances as a means of instilling social skills and etiquette in their children.

    It's All in the Details: Making an early 19th Century Ball Gown By Hope Greenberg In 1775, the year of Jane Austen’s birth, women wore gowns with a fitted bodice, the waist at or below the natural waistline, and full skirts over a visible, often ornate, petticoat. They were made in a variety of heavy silks, cotton or wool. By the time she had reached her late teens the ornate gowns were being replaced by simple, lightweight, often sheer cotton or silk gowns that reflected the ideals of classicism. This guide provides images and details to consider when creating an early 19th century ballgown. The examples provide a general guide, not an exact historic timeline. Fashion is flexible: styles evolve and are adopted at a different pace depending on the wearer's age, location, and economic or social status. These examples focus on evening or ball gowns. Day dresses, walking dresses, and carriage dresses, while following the same basic silhouettes, have their own particular design details. Even evening gowns or opera gowns can usually be distinguished from ball gowns which, after all, must be designed for dancing! By focusing on the details we can see both the evolution of fashion for this period and how best to re-create it. What is the cut of the bodice, the sleeve length, or the height of the bustline? How full is the skirt, and where is that fullness? What colors are used? What type of fabric? Is there trim? If so, how much, what kind, and where is it placed? Based on the shape of the gown, what can we tell about the foundation garments? Paying attention to all these details will help you create a gown that is historically informed as well as beautiful.

    RESURRECTION CATHOLIC SCHOOL 76th ANNUAL CARNIVAL BALL “The Roaring 20s” One of the biggest events and oldest traditions of the year at RCS is our annual Carnival Ball. We are looking forward to another great ball and hope that you will consider entering your child. Our theme this year is “The Roaring 20s.” All CDC guidelines pertaining to COVID-19 will be followed. Once we have a final number of participants, ticket allocations will be announced. Currently each participant will be guaranteed two tickets, with the exception of the High Court.
