Borislav Grgin Filozofski fakultet sveučilišta u Zagrebu PreCeeDing the TRIPLEX CONFINIUM – the battLe oF krbava FieLD, sePteMber 9th, 1493 In this paper the attempt has been made to present a rounded view and oer some new interpretations re- garding one of the most recognizable and dramatic moments during the late medieval Croatian history. e Battle of Krbava Field, September 9th, 1493, dramatically shook the very foundations of medieval Croatia’s political and social structures. It stimulated creation of various texts written by its contemporaries and later commentators, who were discussing political, military and symbolical elements of the battle. e battle left a signicant imprint even in the collective memory of the Croatian people, thanks to the older historians of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and the interpretations of the battle in school manuals and teaching. e Krbava Battle, due to its real and symbolic signicance in Croatian˝history, still remains an interesting and challenging topic for the historians and for the wider public. erefore, it is not surprising that, due to incomplete and sometimes conicting and contradictory information in the sources, the interest for the battle and various interpretations reemerged during the last two decades and a half, after Croatia gained its independence. Key words: Krbava, Croatia, Ottomans, Late Middle Ages, Battle here are few events or moments in Croatian medieval history that are today present in Tnational collective memory. Christian-Muslim Relations A Bibliographical History History of Christian-Muslim Relations Editorial Board David Thomas, University of Birmingham Sandra Toenies Keating, Providence College Tarif Khalidi, American University of Beirut Suleiman Mourad, Smith College Gabriel Said Reynolds, University of Notre Dame Mark Swanson, Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago Volume 24 Christians and Muslims have been involved in exchanges over matters of faith and morality since the founding of Islam. Attitudes between the faiths today are deeply coloured by the legacy of past encounters, and often preserve centuries-old negative views. The History of Christian-Muslim Relations, Texts and Studies presents the surviving record of past encounters in authoritative, fully introduced text editions and annotated translations, and also monograph and collected studies. It illustrates the development in mutual perceptions as these are contained in surviving Christian and Muslim writings, and makes available the arguments and rhetorical strategies that, for good or for ill, have left their mark on attitudes today. The series casts light on a history marked by intellectual creativity and occasional breakthroughs in communication, although, on the whole beset by misunderstanding and misrepresentation. By making this history better known, the series seeks to contribute to improved recognition between Christians and Muslims in the future. • Budget Outturns of Croatian Municipalities, Cities and Counties for 20151
NEWSLETTER Zagreb l Smičiklasova 21 doi: 10.3326/nle.2016.108 [email protected] l www.ijf.hr l tel: +385(0)1 4886 444 No. 108 l November 2016 l ISSN 1848-4662 Budget outturns of Croatian municipalities, cities and counties for 20151 KATARINA OTT, MIHAELA BRONIĆ, BRANKO STANIĆ This article aims to provide a simple presentation of basic data on the budget outturns of Croatian local government units in 2015.2 It includes synthesized tables based on the Ministry of Finance's database, showing revenues and expenditures3, as well as surpluses or deficits (in per capita and total terms). Also presented are data on the populations4 and levels of budget transparency in all the local government units5. This analysis and the tables additionally provided in the Excel format, allow all interested parties to get acquainted with the financial condition of their respective local government units in 2015 and make relevant comparisons with the situation in 20146. While the Ministry of Finance does publish budget outturns for all local government units7, they are in the form of oversized Excel tables, with the cities and municipalities arranged by county. Given the large number of local government units (whose complete budgets are presented), the navigation through these tables and comparison across the local units is often difficult. This article gives the reader a snapshot of the basic financial condition of the local government units in 2015, while more detailed information can be found on the Ministry of Finance’s and local government units’ websites. Nevertheless, some notes may be necessary for a proper understanding of the presented data.

  • Trajectories of Croatian Jesuit Historiography Brnardic, Teodora Shek
From Acceptance to Animosity: Trajectories of Croatian Jesuit Historiography Brnardic, Teodora Shek Teodora Shek Brnardić [email protected] Last modified: March 2018 Introduction The emergence of a Croatian historiography of the Society of Jesus took place in the often virulently anti-Jesuit and anti-clerical atmosphere that was prevalent in Croatia in the second half of the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century. This period represented a historical crisis for the Jesuit order in Croatia, one that provoked controversies that were largely absent in the pre-suppression period, unlike in many other countries where such disputes had existed ever since the sixteenth century. In 1932, Miroslav Vanino, S.J. (1879–1965) launched a scholarly journal entitled Vrela i prinosi: Zbornik za povijest isusovačkog reda u hrvatskim krajevima (Sources and contributions: Collected papers on the history of the Jesuit order in the Croatian lands),1 which marked a turning point in the creation of a Croatian Jesuit historiography. In doing so, Vanino intended to revise the prevailing view of the pre-suppression Jesuits, who were often accused of behaving in an “anti-national” way. This latter view had become widespread among the educated Croatian elite, particularly during the Austro-Hungarian fin-de-siècle. Vanino’s journal accordingly sought to correct this politically biased interpretation of the Jesuits’ role in Croatian history with articles written by both Jesuit and non-Jesuit contributors.2 The journal would provide the foundation for a source-based, critical history of the Society of Jesus in the Croatian lands and of its relations with the Croats.
