Wines of CROATIA unique and exciting Croatia as a AUSTRIA modern country HUNGARY SLOVENIA CROATIA Croatia, having been eager to experience immediate changes, success and recognition, has, at the beginning of a new decade, totally altered its approach to life and business. A strong desire to earn quick money as well as rapid trade expansion have been replaced by more moderate, longer-term investment projects in the areas of viticulture, rural tourism, family hotels, fisheries, olive growing, ecological agriculture and superior restaurants. BOSNIA & The strong first impression of international brands has been replaced by turning to traditional HERZEGOVINA products, having their origins in a deep historic heritage. The expansion of fast-food chains was brought to a halt in the mid-1990’s as multinational companies understood that investment would not be returned as quickly as had been planned. More ambitious restaurants transformed into centres of hedonism, whereas small, thematic ones offering several fresh and well-prepared dishes are visited every day. Tradition and a return to nature are now popular ITALY Viticulture has been fully developed. Having superior technology at their disposal, a new generation of well-educated winemakers show firm personal convictions and aims with clear goals. The rapid growth of international wine varietals has been hindered while local varietals that were almost on the verge of extinction, have gradually gained in importance. Not only have the most prominent European regions shared their experience, but the world’s renowned wine experts have offered their consulting services. Biodynamic movement has been very brisk with every wine region bursting with life.

  • Trajectories of Croatian Jesuit Historiography Brnardic, Teodora Shek
From Acceptance to Animosity: Trajectories of Croatian Jesuit Historiography Brnardic, Teodora Shek Teodora Shek Brnardić [email protected] Last modified: March 2018 Introduction The emergence of a Croatian historiography of the Society of Jesus took place in the often virulently anti-Jesuit and anti-clerical atmosphere that was prevalent in Croatia in the second half of the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century. This period represented a historical crisis for the Jesuit order in Croatia, one that provoked controversies that were largely absent in the pre-suppression period, unlike in many other countries where such disputes had existed ever since the sixteenth century. In 1932, Miroslav Vanino, S.J. (1879–1965) launched a scholarly journal entitled Vrela i prinosi: Zbornik za povijest isusovačkog reda u hrvatskim krajevima (Sources and contributions: Collected papers on the history of the Jesuit order in the Croatian lands),1 which marked a turning point in the creation of a Croatian Jesuit historiography. In doing so, Vanino intended to revise the prevailing view of the pre-suppression Jesuits, who were often accused of behaving in an “anti-national” way. This latter view had become widespread among the educated Croatian elite, particularly during the Austro-Hungarian fin-de-siècle. Vanino’s journal accordingly sought to correct this politically biased interpretation of the Jesuits’ role in Croatian history with articles written by both Jesuit and non-Jesuit contributors.2 The journal would provide the foundation for a source-based, critical history of the Society of Jesus in the Croatian lands and of its relations with the Croats.

URBACT III – TOWN OF PETRINJA SUSTAINABLE URBAN MOBILITY Petrinja is often known as a small, peaceful and harmonious town in north-west Croatia with great history and tradition. It is situated 13 kilometres south-west of Sisak and is an integral part of Sisak- moslavina county. Petrinja lies at an elevation of approximately 108m (354 ft). It is located in the territory of Pokuplje, in the centre slopes of Banovina region. The town covers the surface area of 380,94 km2 (147,08 sq mi). According to the last population census, Petrinja has an estimated population of 24.671, reflecting decrease of 35% since the previous census which was taken in 1991. when the town had population of 35.151. Although, Petrinja is relatively small town, it is very well known for sports and sports acchievements. There are thirty sports clubs and sports associations to confirm that. The greatest acchievements are accomplished by our wrestlers. One of them is the Olympic winner, Vlado Lisjak. Football players, handball players and dancers also acchieve great sports results at national and international levels. Petrinja and its area have suffered horribly in Croatian war of independence, known as „Homeland war“. Devastation of the town and other post war effects could be seen even today. Those were destructions and damages in historical and cultural heritage which had direct impact on cultural infrastructure and sustainable tourism, sports , town´s visual identity and on all aspects which were neccessary for development of any kind.

Naravno, postoje i neistomišljenici.

  • Turks in Slovenia and Their Influences on Slovenian Music
EÜ Devlet Türk Musikisi Konservatuarı Dergisi 2013 (3): 87-101 TURKS IN SLOVENIA AND THEIR INFLUENCES ON SLOVENIAN MUSIC Franc KRIŽNAR PhD, Maribor/Slovenia ABSTRACT The Turkish invasions i.e. irruptions by the Turkish armed troops into the Slovene countries lasted from the beginning of the 15th to the end of the 17th century. The Turkish expansion to the Balkan Peninsula and then towards the middle of Europe was slowed down on the Bosnian and Herzegovinian border. It stopped completely at the end of the 16th century with the battle at Sisak in Croatia (1593). In Hungary, in the direction of the region of Prekmurje, the expansion stopped in the second half of the 17th century. Thus Turkish invasions lasted from 1408 to 1684 not only on the (contemporary European) Slovene state, but also outside its territory, on the then Slovene ethnic space: in Friuli and towards Trieste (Italy), in Carinthia (Austria) and in Istria (Croatia). All of this had a negative influence on the relations with the Turks and increased the opposition towards them. At the same time it strengthened people’s awareness about their affiliation towards Western Christianity. In a narrower sense it invigorated the awareness about the same threatened psycho- physical environment. In the perception of the Slovene people, that time was formed by a variety of different artistic types. They dealt with Turkish themes, also in music. The development of Slovene music i.e. the music in Slovenia was at that time very rich (from the 15th to the 17th century). Here and there it was more or less near and equal to West European music of that time.

Over the decade of intense research on empires, several other issues have been brought to the fore, including those that relate to memories of – and nostalgia for – empires. The latter seem particularly in tune with the Zeitgeist of Western societies. Nostalgic memories of defunct empires are fashionable not only in the social sciences. Empires are being manifoldly evoked in diverse cultural practices as well as in political arenas. National and regional identities are often being affirmed, and others denied, with reference to one-time imperial states. Meanwhile, memories have also become a substantial topic in anthropology, yet memories of empires are largely exempt from anthropologists’ attention.
