Peter Pace, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, called homosexuality "immoral" yesterday and likened it to adultery, military analysts said his comment suggests the armed forces have run out of rationales for banning known gays from service. "This might be the beginning of the end," said Aaron Belkin, Director of the Palm Center and Associate Professor of Political Science at University of California, Santa Barbara, "but it may be a long, drawn-out ending." Belkin, whose research center studies "don't ask, don't tell," said that returning to talk of morality showed the absence of military rationales for the gay ban at a time when capable gay soldiers are being replaced by drug abusers, felons and high school drop-outs. "If you want to talk about morality, the explosion of moral waivers the military is granting to fill its shortfalls is a far greater concern than the service of gays who are ready, willing and able to fight," Belkin said. A Palm Center study released last month found that the number of convicted felons who enlisted in the U.S. military nearly doubled in the past three years under the moral waiver program which enlists those who otherwise would not qualify due to poor behavior.

Powell called for the speedy deployment of troops to Liberia, the top two American military officers warned today of significant dangers facing United States military involvement there and called for a clear mission and a strategy for its successful end before any troops are sent. The anarchy and violence in Liberia, they predicted, would not yield to a quick solution. "It's not a pretty situation," Gen. Richard B. Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said during his reconfirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee. "It's not going to give way to any instant fix. Whatever the fix is going to be is going to have to be a long-term fix." Two days ago, Mr. Powell acknowledged his frustration with the slow pace of the administration so far, telling The Washington Times that "we do have an interest in making sure that West Africa doesn't simply come apart." Pentagon officials and military officers have for several weeks described the complexities — and dangers — of American involvement in trying to separate warring factions in Liberia, which was founded in 1847 by freed American slaves. But the comments today by General Myers and Gen. Peter Pace of the Marine Corps, the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs, were the most sobering public analysis to date of the risks. Jesse Cottle and his wife Kelly on many “best of 2013” lists. It’s a remarkable illustration of service and love—and the Semper Fi Fund is honored to have played a small part in it. Jesse joined the Marine Corps in 2003 and served three deployments as a radio operator in Iraq. He transferred to an EOD (explosive ordnance disposal) team, spent two years in Japan, and was deployed to Afghanistan in February 2009. On July 19, 2009, Jesse’s EOD team was clearing IEDs (improvised explosive devices) in support of a Marine infantry company. Jesse stepped on a pressure plate with his left foot, triggering the explosion that claimed both his legs.     General Peter Pace, United States Marine Corps (Retired) General Peter Pace retired from active duty on October 1, 2007, after more than 40 years of service in the United States Marine Corps. General Pace was sworn in as sixteenth Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on Sep. 30, 2005. In this capacity, he served as the principal military advisor to the President, the Secretary of Defense, the National Security Council, and the Homeland Security Council. Prior to becoming Chairman, he served four years as Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. General Pace holds the distinction of being the first Marine to have served in either of these positions. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Teaneck, NJ, General Pace was commissioned in June 1967, following graduation from the United States Naval Academy. He holds a Master of Science Degree in Administration from George Washington University, attended the Harvard University Senior Executives in National and International Security program, and graduated from the National War College. During his distinguished career, General Pace has held command at virtually every level, beginning as a Rifle Platoon Leader in Vietnam. He also served as Commanding Officer of 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment; Commanding Officer of the Marine Barracks in Washington, D.C.; Deputy Commander, Marine Forces Somalia; Deputy Commander, Joint Task Force Somalia; Director of Operations for the Joint Staff; Commander, U.S., Marine Forces Atlantic/Europe/South; and Commander in Chief, US Southern Command. In June, 2008, General Pace was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor a President can bestow.
