Dan and Claudia believe that Sensory Friendly is the future of family entertainment and have committed to presenting their work in this inclusive manner. Zanes and Eliaza are currently touring for Night Train 57 and the new album, Lead Belly, Baby!, which celebrates the children’s music of his childhood inspiration Lead Belly – the Godfather of modern family music. In between tours, Zanes teaches guitar and ukulele on Sonic Junction, the leader in online instructional videos, and listens obsessively to Haitian music. About the Book Zanes has curated a rich selection of 64 soulful songs from an essential cross-section of folk styles while highlighting thir multicultural roots. -

Southern Black Gospel Music: Qualitative Look at Quartet Sound
LIBERTY UNIVERSITY SOUTHERN BLACK GOSPEL MUSIC: QUALITATIVE LOOK AT QUARTET SOUND DURING THE GOSPEL ‘BOOM’ PERIOD OF 1940-1960 A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN ETHNOMUSICOLOGY BY BEATRICE IRENE PATE LYNCHBURG, V.A. April 2014 1 Abstract The purpose of this work is to identify features of southern black gospel music, and to highlight what makes the music unique. One goal is to present information about black gospel music and distinguishing the different definitions of gospel through various ages of gospel music. A historical accounting for the gospel music is necessary, to distinguish how the different definitions of gospel are from other forms of gospel music during different ages of gospel. The distinctions are important for understanding gospel music and the ‘Southern’ gospel music distinction. The quartet sound was the most popular form of music during the Golden Age of Gospel, a period in which there was significant growth of public consumption of Black gospel music, which was an explosion of black gospel culture, hence the term ‘gospel boom.’ The gospel boom period was from 1940 to 1960, right after the Great Depression, a period that also included World War II, and right before the Civil Rights Movement became a nationwide movement. This work will evaluate the quartet sound during the 1940’s, 50’s, and 60’s, which will provide a different definition for gospel music during that era. Using five black southern gospel quartets—The Dixie Hummingbirds, The Fairfield Four, The Golden Gate Quartet, The Soul Stirrers, and The Swan Silvertones—to define what southern black gospel music is, its components, and to identify important cultural elements of the music. -

Bob Crewe had a special talent himself and was a highly respected producer Jean’s good friend Ellie Greenwich had a good relation- ship with Bob Crewe and commented on his ability and on how they first met in an interview before her untimely passing in 2009….. "I'm not exactly sure when I met Bob Crewe, but we always saw each other around the business from the very beginning. (We) had an affinity for each other (and) still do! He was a joy to work with on all levels . he's a perfectionist, he's open to any outside ideas, he really knows what he wants and gets it, and most of all, he is passionate about what he does. He puts all of himself into eve- rything he touches . I always loved and still do love Bob! I can go on and on about this talented gentleman, and he is just that: A 'gentle man'." Catalogue of Photographs of Performers and Shows in the Archives of the Embassy Theatre Foundation The archives of the Embassy Theatre Foundation hold more than 3000 artifacts, including more than 600 photographs of vaudevillians inscribed to Bud Berger (long-time stage man- ager at the Embassy Theatre, known as the Emboyd until 1952); more than 300 posters, playbills, programs, stools, and even guitars signed by the stars and casts of shows that have played at the Embassy Theatre over the past forty years, rang- ing from classic and current Broadway shows to acrobatic groups, choral ensembles, dance shows, ballet, stand-up comedians, rock bands, country singers, travel films, silent films, theatre organists, and so on; and hundreds of publicity photographs of performers, shows, and events at the theatre, primarily from the period following the establishment of the Embassy Theatre Foundation and its rescue of the theatre from the wrecking ball in 1975; and a nearly complete run of the journal of the American Theatre Organ Society. The archive is now almost fully catalogued and preserved in archival housing. Earlier excerpts from the catalogue (available on the Archives page of the Embassy Theatre’s web site) cover the photographs inscribed to Bud Berger and the posters, playbills, programs, stools, and so on from later shows at the Embassy. This is the third excerpt, covering the public- ity photographs of the last forty-five years and a few photographs of earlier events, Bud Berger, and other members of the stage crew. The publicity photographs are primarily of individ- ual performers, but a few shows are presented as well, including Ain’t Misbehavin’, Annie, Barnum, Bubbling Brown Sugar, Cabaret, California Suite, Cats, A Christ- mas Carol, Dancin’, Evita, Gypsy, I'm Getting My Act Together And Taking It On The Road, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Peter Pan, Same Time Next Year, Side by Side by Sondheim, and Ziegfeld: A Night at the Follies. -

He was born in New Jersey, the son of a professional trumpet player, who started him in music with an accordian at the age of nine. At thirteen he was also playing string base and trumpet and by fifteen was working clubs. Later, while attending the Manhattan School of Music, Charlie met and became friendly with Frankie Valli , who, in turn, introduced him to producer Bob Crewe. At age twenty-three he had arranged his first number one record and was then involved with most of the Four Season's hits thereafter. Charlie worked extensively with the Crewe organization and arranged "A Lover's Concerto" for Toys and "Good Morning Starshine" for Oliver. He then decided to try producing and among his first efforts were "The Name Game" for Shirley Ellis, "The Mouse" for Soupy Sales and a major hit, "Lightning Strikes" for Lou Christie. His greatest personal achievement was co- production of the classic Laura Nyro album "Eli and the 13 Confessions". After a brief sabatical, Charlie recently came back to the music business in style. Billy Jonas and his band bring ‘neo-tribal hootenanny’ to CL By JAMI KUNZER • [email protected] “It’s easy for people to be part of the music and to feel like the song has been part of their lives even if they’ve never heard it,” he said. At a performance of Jonas and the Billy Jonas Band, the audience is invited to participate as Jonas combines conventional instruments of guitar, bass and marimba with homemade creations, such as buckets and barrels, keys and cans, bells and body percussion. His three goals: to have fun, to make it easy and to sound good. “Adults and kids are equally entertained,” Jonas said. “We look for the balance between asking them to be part of it and asking them to go along for the ride.” Jonas performs throughout the country and Canada. His CD, “What Kind of Cat are You?!” has received multiple awards, including a First Place/Gold from the American Federation of Independent Musicians and Parent’s Choice Gold. Growing up in Chicago, Jonas learned instruments, such as piano, guitar and trombone, at a young age. But, he said, “The most joy I had was when I was with my friends playing rhythms in the kitchen on pots and pans.” He and his friends would bang on the pans with chopsticks. In college, they turned the act into a band called “The Oberlin Big Bang Theory.” After college, Jonas began writing songs and playing them at coffeehouses. He’d present them “raw,” using only a water bottle drum and his voice.
