3 Pitching depth will anchor CSI Baseball this season

When the College of Southern Idaho baseball team takes the field this season, they will have players at all po- sitions returning to give the Golden Eagles some depth and experience. But most importantly, they have experi- ence on the mound with four back that threw significant . “Our depth in our catching and pitching staff is going to be our strength,” said CSI head coach Boomer Walker. “The four returning guys have done a great job leading the pitching staff. They work hard and trust the process. We will continue to improve because they have bought in.” Having four catchers that are all capable of a starting role doesn’t hurt. “It creates a healthy competition and having a strong pitching staff has accelerated our catchers’ growth as well,” Walker said. Returning on the mound will be Isaac Anderson (Boise), Grant Kukuk (Reno, Nev.), Kolton Brost (Monsa, Utah) and Dillon Dove (Las Vegas, Nev.). The four combined for a 11-13 record last season. They will be joined by Mason Hilty (Richland, Wash.), Erik Nouis (Las Vegas, Nev.), Tanner Draper (Riverton, Utah), Tyler Bur- dett (Las Vegas, Nev.), Makay Nelson (Maple Mountain, Utah), Zack Draper (Salt Lake City, Utah), Braxton Deve- raux (Lehi, Utah) and Josh Gasser (Boise). Competing for a spot behind the dish will be returner Nathan Acker- man (Langley, B.C.) and freshmen Lincoln Rivera (Spanish Fork, Utah), Mikey Ortega (Walnut, Calif.) and Bodie Cooper (Pocatel- lo, Idaho). Five Golden Eagles

4 2014 Outlook return to the infield or outfield including Jordan Godman (Las Vegas, Nev.), Preston Young (Riverton, Utah), Bobby Wright (Las Vegas, Nev.), AJ Van Meetren (Las Vegas, Nev.) and RJ Bush (Reno, Nev.). Newcomers include Jayden Bearnson (Syracuse, Utah), Harrison Ramey (Lake Oswego, Ore.), Cody Schmidt (Las Vegas, Nev.), Skyler Souza (Boise), Jeff Gilstrap (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Cody Jenkins (Denver, Colo.) “As our position players get more comfortable we have a chance to be good,” Walker said. “We have a lot of sophomores but not a lot of experience. On the defensive side, we just need to play consistent and know that it will only get better as the season progresses,” Walker said. As always, getting of the Region 18 Tournament and into the district playoff will be tough. “I think the league is as good as it’s ever been. Obviously Western Nevada is the team to beat because they have a strong group back. Southern Nevada is always good and Salt Lake is athletic,” Walker said. “Colorado has a chance to win the league. They have as much pitching as they’ve ever had. They are really improved and well coached. We are going to have all we can handle.” This year’s Region 18 Tournament winner will travel to Region 1 for the District Playoff. The winner of that three-team playoff will advance to the JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, Colo.

5 Boomer Walker Head Coach 11th Season

It was only natural that Boomer Walker would someday wear a coach’s cap at Southern Idaho. After assisting the Golden Eagles for nine years Boomer took over as head coach in 2004. In those 10 years, Boomer has amassed a 309 wins and just 215 losses. In 2006 and 2007, the Golden Eagles battled for the regular season championship going into the final weekend of play. In 2009, The Golden Eagles played in the Region 18 Championship and advanced to the district playoff. Boomer was barely walking when his dad, former head coach Skip Walker, started coaching at CSI. And Boomer has always been a part of the program. He was a 12-year-old bat boy when he witnessed the Golden Eagles’ national championship in 1984. Boomer starred for Twin Falls High School, leading the Bruins to a state championship in 1988. Then, he wore the gold and black himself when he played at Southern Idaho from 1989 to 1992, winning all-region honors as a shortstop in 1992. After playing at Northeast Louisiana University, Boomer worked as a student assistant in 1995, gaining valuable coaching experience. In 1996, Boomer returned to Southern Idaho to re-unite with his father. The two still work together but Boomer is the head coach and Skip continues as a hitting instructor. Boomer said it doesn’t feel much different to be in the head coach’s shoes instead of assisting. “I’ve been around here forever so it doesn’t feel any different,” Walker said. “I still feel pressure to keep this program on top, but not any more pressure than before. I’m not naive to think I can accomplish what my dad did.” As far as changes in the program, Boomer said they are very subtle. “My overall philosophy of CSI Baseball is the same. People who have been around the program for a long time won’t see a whole lot of changes,” he said. “I would say the only difference is that my approach is not as old school.” When Boomer isn’t coaching from the dugout, he enjoys waterskiing and playing softball. Boomer and his wife Maria have two boys - Tai Ripken and Treyson.

6 1999 Region 18 Coach of the Year

309-215 Overall Record

7 Nick Aiello Assistant Coach 3rd Season

Nick Aiello begins his third season with the College of Southern Idaho baseball program as a pitching coach. Aiello, who pitched for the Golden Eagles in 1999, came to CSI from the College of Southern Nevada where he assisted in 2010-2011. “Nick has an outstanding reputation as one of the top pitching coaches in the Las Vegas area,” said CSI Athletic Director Joel Bate. “He is highly respected for his knowledge and his ability to get the best out of his players. His ties to the Vegas baseball community have opened up recruiting relationships in that area. We are lucky to have a former Eagle with that kind of talent working for us.” Aiello came to CSI the first time in 1999 after transferring from Grayson College. That year, he earned Region 18 Tournament MVP honors in leading CSI to the Region 18 Championship. He graduated from CSI with an associate’s degree in liberal arts. After CSI, Aiello transfered to University of Nevada, Reno, where he was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2001. He played in the Rays minor league organization for three years. Since then, Aiello has also coached in the Durango High School legion program and has served as an associate scout for the Tampa Bay Rays. Aiello and his wife Jodi have three children - Averi, Abbi and Luciano.

“Nick is a highly intense motivator with a wealth of knowledge to improve and get them to the next level. He has a lot of recruiting ties that greatly benefit us.” - Coach Walker

8 Nik Gumeson Assistant Coach 2nd Season

Nik Gumeson joined the Eagles as a volunteer assistant coach in the fall of 2012 and worked into a full-time assistant this season. Gumeson is familiar with the Golden Eagle baseball program, hav- ing played at CSI in 2006 and 2007. Originally from Salt Lake City, Gumeson graduated from Riverton High School in 2005. After playing at CSI, Gumeson continued his playing career and schooling at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas for one year and then transferred to University of Utah where he played baseball and graduated with a degree in exercise and sports science. Gumeson played one year in Hoofddorp, Holland before assisting for two years at Riverton High School. “Nik adds a lot as far as being a program guy. He is willing to do anything to help the kids. He is very committed and is willing to sacrifice time to help us out.” - Coach Walker

“Matt is very appreciative to what CSI has given him. He is willing to do whatever to help the school. He is dependable and will be successful in whatever he chooses to do in life.” - Coach Walker

35 President Jeff Fox

Dr. Jeff Fox was named the fourth College of Southern Idaho President in October of 2013, with an official start date of January 2014. He started at CSI as an Associate Professor of English in 1987; in 2006, he attained the rank of Professor of Merit. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in English from California State University at Sacramento and his Ph. D. in Higher Education Leadership from the University of Idaho (his 2008 dissertation was on community college presidencies.) From 1987 to 2000, he taught a variety of courses including literature, humanities, composition, and Japanese language. Fox was appointed as Director of the Academic Development Center in 2000, and in 2003 he became Chair of the English, Languages, and Philosophy Department. Fox was selected as CSI Academic Teacher of the Year in 1995, and he was awarded the Teaching Excellence Award from the J. A. & Kathryn Albertson and CSI Foundations in 2000. In 2008 after a national search, Fox was appointed Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer. He and Evin, his wife of 31 years, raised their two sons in Twin Falls.

Athletic Director Joel Bate

Former CSI women’s basketball coach Joel Bate took over Golden Eagle Athletic Director responsibilities in January 2007. Bate, who had been teaching in the English Department since he arrived on the CSI campus in 1993, gave up teaching in the classroom to work with student-athletes and coaches on a daily basis. Bate coached at CSI from 1993 until 2000, leading the Lady Golden Eagles to the national tournament in 1999. During that span, Bate compiled a 144-78 record. He coached four NJCAA All-Americans and four NJCAA Academic All-Americans. Two players went on to play professional basketball, including Jessica Gibbs Mesna who assisted current coach Randy Rogers. In 1999, Bate earned Region 18 Coach of the Year honors. Prior to working at CSI, Bate taught and coached at Bishop Kelly High School in Boise. He taught senior English and headed the English department. In addition to his teaching duties, he coached girls’ volleyball, track and basketball, where he compiled a 114-32 record and four third-place state finishes. Bate earned his undergraduate degree in marketing at Boise State University and his master’s degree in English at the University of Idaho in 1986. Bate and his wife Donna and three children live in Twin Falls.
