3 Deeper pitching, more athleticism defines this year’s CSI baseball team

The College of Southern Idaho baseball team returns just five players from last season’s team that took third in the Scenic West Athletic Conference and at the Region 18 Tournament. They are joined by redshirt-sopho- more returner Kendal Maier and two sophomore transfers, giving them a eight players that have played at the collegiate level. One of the areas that the Golden Eagles will be the deepest and have the most experience will be on the mound. All region selection Eric Holdren and Kyle Olason, along with Joey Gelz return for the Eagles as sopho- mores. Newcomer sophomore transfers Ryan Johnson and Nolan Stouder give CSI five who understand the rigors of college baseball. Joining those five on the mound will be freshmen Kolton Brost, Grant Kukuk, KadeWagner, Matt Roth, Dil- lon Dove and Eli Davidann. “Pitching will definitely be a strength for us this year,” said CSI head coach Boomer Walker. “We have a lot of sophomore leadership. There is a lot of healthy competition to get within the staff. They understand that there are other equally talented pitchers on the staff and they push each other.” The only other area on the field that CSI returns any players is in the infield. All region selection Carter Yagi along with Tanner Morache and Kendal Maier are the only sophomores on the team that aren’t pitchers. Maier played in 2011 before an injury sidelined him last season. Newcomers to the team that play infield are Isaac Anderson, Kholeton Sanchez, Patrick Green, Preston Young, Bobby Wright and RJ Bush could all see some time on the dirt. “Our infield is the only place on the offensive side we have experience,” Walker said. “We do not have a ton

4 of depth but we do have experience and have a lot of talent offensively and de- 2013 Outlook fensively. We have great on-field leadership.” There will be all new faces in the outfield. Competing for a spot will be Anderson, Jordan McComb, Young, AJ Van Meetren and Jordan Godman. “We have no returners,” Walker said. “We have a lot of inexperience but hopefully our athleticism and talent will make up for that. If they can fight through the ups and downs of being freshmen, we will be good. They are a lot more athletic than last year.” Walker hopes this year’s mix of newcomers, returners and a deeper pitching staff will be the recipe to win the Region 18 Championship. “I think the league will be way up,” Walker said. He said Southern Nevada is back to having the talent everyone is used to seeing and they return almost everyone. “No one has been able to solve Western Ne- vada. They have gone to four of the last seven JUCO World Series. They have a very talented group again this year.” Salt Lake CC has emerged as a team that has had a lot of recent success. “They lost some key players from last year but made up for it with a strong recruiting class,” Walker said. “Colorado Northwestern CC wants to move forwards. They will be improved. Their coach has been there a year and I don’t think anyone will be able to look past them.” The conference will be down a team this season as USU- Eastern will be playing a Divi- sion II schedule. The winner of the Region 18 Tournament will need to win a district playoff at the Region 9 winner. Walker hopes this season’s Golden Eagles will be in that mix. “We are better than last season because we have more consistent pitching and more talent,” Walker said. “The over- all feel is better. There is more competition.”

5 Boomer Walker Head Coach 10th Season

It was only natural that Boomer Walker would someday wear a coach’s cap at Southern Idaho. After assisting the Golden Eagles for nine years Boomer took over as head coach in 2004. In those nine years, Boomer has amassed a 279 wins and just 185 losses. In 2006 and 2007, the Golden Eagles battled for the regular season championship going into the final weekend of play. In 2009, The Golden Eagles played in the Region 18 Championship and advanced to the district playoff. Boomer was barely walking when his dad, former head coach Skip Walker, started coaching at CSI. And Boomer has always been a part of the program. He was a 12-year-old bat boy when he witnessed the Golden Eagles’ national championship in 1984. Boomer starred for Twin Falls High School, leading the Bruins to a state championship in 1988. Then, he wore the gold and black himself when he played at Southern Idaho from 1989 to 1992, winning all-region honors as a shortstop in 1992. After playing at Northeast Louisiana University, Boomer worked as a student assistant in 1995, gaining valuable coaching experience. In 1996, Boomer returned to Southern Idaho to re-unite with his father. The two still work together but Boomer is the head coach and Skip continues as a hitting instructor. Boomer said it doesn’t feel much different to be in the head coach’s shoes instead of assisting. “I’ve been around here forever so it doesn’t feel any different,” Walker said. “I still feel pressure to keep this program on top, but not any more pressure than before. I’m not naive to think I can accomplish what my dad did.” As far as changes in the program, Boomer said they are very subtle. “My overall philosophy of CSI Baseball is the same. People who have been around the program for a long time won’t see a whole lot of changes,” he said. “I would say the only difference is that my approach is not as old school.” When Boomer isn’t coaching from the dugout, he enjoys waterskiing and playing softball. Boomer and his wife Maria have two boys - Tai Ripken and Treyson.

6 1999 Region 18 Coach of the Year

279-185 Overall Record

7 Nick Aiello Assistant Coach 2nd Season

Nick Aiello begins his second season with the College of Southern Idaho baseball program as a pitching coach. Aiello, who pitched for the Golden Eagles in 1999, came to CSI from the College of Southern Nevada where he assisted in 2011. “Nick has an outstanding reputation as one of the top pitching coaches in the Las Vegas area,” said CSI Athletic Director Joel Bate. “He is highly respected for his knowledge and his ability to get the best of his players. With his ties to the Vegas baseball community, it should open up recruiting relationships in that area. We are lucky to have a former Eagle with that kind of talent come back to join us.” Aiello came to CSI the first time in 1999 after transferring from Grayson College. That year, he earned Region 18 Tournament MVP honors in leading CSI to the Region 18 Championship. He graduated from CSI with an associate’s degree in liberal arts. After CSI, Aiello transfered to University of Nevada, Reno, where he was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2001. He played in the Rays minor league organization for three years. Since then, Aiello has coached in the Durango High School legion program and has served as an associate scout for the Tampa Bay Rays. Aiello and his wife Jodi have two daughters - Averi and Abbi.

“Nick is a highly intense motivator with a wealth of knowledge to improve pitchers and get them to the next level. He has a lot of recruiting ties that greatly benefit us.” - Coach Walker

8 Skip Walker Assistant Coach 41st Season Golden Eagle baseball fans know him as Skip. People who spend a lot of time around him are familiar with the phrases “jeezo-peezo,” “mentality,” and a few others too colorful to print here. His players, both former and current, can recite the five P’s - “proper planning prevents poor procedure.” But it’s the rich history Jim Walker has brought to the CSI program that defines who he is. Skip Walker is a legend at CSI. Not only was Walker inducted into the CSI Athletic Hall of Fame 2003, but Frontier Field was officially named the James F. “Skip” Walker baseball field the same year. In his 31 years as a head coach at CSI, Walker planted the trees, built the clubhouse and played a major role in creating one of the top five JUCO fields in the country. Along the way, he has cultivated baseball players, winning 12 region titles, competing in eight JUCO World Series and winning a national championship in 1984, taking third in 1988, fourth in 1986 and fifth in 1975. Retiring from head coaching duties in 2004, Skip continues to be a part of CSI baseball as an assistant. Walker is married to his wife Julene. They have a daughter Carly and a son, Boomer, who is the Golden Eagles head coach.

“I’m the luckiest guy in the country. I have an offensive assistant that has won more than 1100 games in his career. I’m in a great, great situation. He can now use his knowledge to help the players without worrying about all the other stuff.” - Boomer Walker on having his dad and former head coach Skip Walker as an assistant.

9 Gene Ritchie Volunteer Assistant Coach

“Our program couldn’t survive without Geno. He is the first one at the field each day and the last one to leave. He is the hardest working retired person in the country.” - Coach Walker

Athletic Director Joel Bate

Former CSI women’s basketball coach Joel Bate took over Golden Eagle Athletic Director responsibilities in January 2007. Bate, who had been teaching in the English Department since he arrived on the CSI campus in 1993, gave up teaching in the classroom to work with student-athletes and coaches on a daily basis. Bate coached at CSI from 1993 until 2000, leading the Lady Golden Eagles to the national tournament in 1999. During that span, Bate compiled a 144-78 record. He coached four NJCAA All-Americans and four NJCAA Academic All-Americans. Two players went on to play professional basketball, including Jessica Gibbs Mesna who assisted current coach Randy Rogers. In 1999, Bate earned Region 18 Coach of the Year honors. Prior to working at CSI, Bate taught and coached at Bishop Kelly High School in Boise. He taught senior English and headed the English department. In addition to his teaching duties, he coached girls’ volleyball, track and basketball, where he compiled a 114-32 record and four third-place state finishes. Bate earned his undergraduate degree in marketing at Boise State University and his master’s degree in English at the University of Idaho in 1986. Bate and his wife Donna and three children live in Twin Falls.
