Ghafar Mazlan6, Rumeaida Mat Piah1, Shahrol Idham Ismail1 & Min Pau Tan1,3* Benthic species, though ecologically important, are vulnerable to genetic loss and population size reduction due to impacts from fshing trawls. An assessment of genetic diversity and population structure is therefore needed to assist in a resource management program. To address this issue, the two‑spined yellowtail stargazer (Uranoscopus cognatus) was collected within selected locations in the Indo‑West Pacifc (IWP). The partial mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 and the nuclear DNA recombination activating gene 1 were sequenced. Genetic diversity analyses revealed that the populations were moderately to highly diversifed (haplotype diversity, H = 0.490–0.900, nucleotide diversity, π = 0.0010–0.0034) except sampling station (ST) 1 and 14. The low diversity level, however was apparent only in the matrilineal marker (H = 0.118–0.216; π = 0.0004–0.0008), possibly due to stochastic factors or anthropogenic stressors. Population structure analyses revealed a retention of ancestral polymorphism that was likely due to incomplete lineage sorting in U. cognatus, and prolonged vicariance by the Indo‑Pacifc Barrier has partitioned them into separate stock units. Population segregation was also shown by the phenotypic divergence in allopatric populations, regarding the premaxillary protrusion, which is possibly associated with the mechanism for upper jaw movement in biomechanical feeding approaches.

    S4/FB3<CHAVALIT> Species composition and Diversity of Fishes in the South China Sea, Area I: Gulf of Thailand and East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia Chavalit Vidthayanon Department of Fisheries, Bangkok 10900, Thailand ABSTRACT The collaborative research on species composition and diversity of fishes in the Gulf of Thai- land and eastern Malay Peninsula was carried out by R. V. Pramong 4 in Thai waters and K.K. Manchong, K.K. Mersuji in Malaysian waters, through otter-board trawling surveys. Taxonomic surveys also done for commercial fishes in the markets of some localities. Totally 300 species from 18 orders and 89 families were obtained. Their diversity are drastically declined, compare to the previous survey from 380 species trawled. The station point of off Ko Chang, eastern Gulf of Thai- land and off Pahang River shown significantly high diversity of fishes57 and 73 species found. De- mersal species form the main composition of the catchs. The lizardfish Saurida undosquamis, S. miropectoralis, the bigeye Priacanthus tayenus and P. macracanthus, the rabbitfish Siganus canaliculatus and hairtail Trichiurus lepturus were the most abundant economic species found in mast of the sampling stations. Fishing efforts were 34 hours and 49 hours for the cruises I and II, with average catch per hour of 12.04 and 34.79 kg. respectively. The maximum catch per hour was 175.3 kg in Malaysian waters, the minimum was 4.33 kg in Thai waters. The average percentage of eco- nomic fishes is higher than that of trash fishes in Malaysian waters, it ranged from 55.45 to 81.92 %.

The teardrop threadfi n bream, Nemipterus isacanthus (Bleeker, 1873), is reported from northern New Guinea for the fi rst time based on specimens caught by hook and line, and photographed in June 2008 and September 2014 at Kamiali Wildlife Management Area (KWMA), Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea. A large, permanent population exists at KWMA, thus the known range of N. isacanthus is extended by at least 1400 km. Morphometric and meristic data for specimens caught in September 2014 are provided. Abstract | The present research aimed to define the potential availability of overflowed fish catch by traditional fishermen and to compare meal yield rate, physical property, crude nutrient content, and nutritive value of fish meal produced from overflowed fishes by direct or steam cooking before drying. Samples of three overflowed fishes, i.e., sardine, ponyfish, and mackerel tuna, were processed into meal products by direct sun drying or steam cooking before drying. Fish meals analyzed for physical properties (bulk density, compacted bulk density, angle of response), moisture, and crude nutrient content (crude protein, crude ash, crude fat, crude fiber), and minerals (Ca, P). Their nutritive values were evaluated by mixing 5% of fishmeal with basal diet and fed to 180 laying quails for 6 weeks. Parameters measured included feed intake, egg production, FCR, and eggshell quality. There were three species of overflowed fishes that were potentially available for producing a fish meal, i.e., sardine, pony fish, and mackerel tuna. Meal yield rate varied from 19.1 to 29.6%. The mackerel tuna had the highest meal rate of 24.5-29.6%. The results suggested that fish meals provided by the steam cooking before drying had lower meal yield rate but better product qualities in terms of physical properties, moisture, and crude nutrient content, and nutritive values.

Nonetheless, species identification based on molecular approach is essential for discrimination of look-alike species. In this study, we focused on the marine fishes Family Nemipteridae, one of the commercially important group distributed within the surrounding seas of Malaysia. Some of the samples were collected during the National Demersal Trawl Survey in the Exclusive Economic Zone of East Coast Peninsular Malaysia by the Department of Fishery Malaysia. A 652bp region of COI was sequenced for 74 individuals from nine putative species. Additional 34 COI sequences from GenBank were also included in this study making the total number of samples analysed to 108 individuals. The average Kimura 2-parameter (K2P) nucleotide divergence was 0.34% among individuals within species and 6.97% within genera. All putative species formed monophyletic clades in both Neighbour-joining (NJ) and Maximum-likelihood (ML) trees.
