Wentz Library, United Lutheran Seminary, Gettysburg, PA. PROVENANCE This collection was donated to the Seminary Archives by Rev. Gerry Rickel. The papers were accumulated while the Rev. Rickel was a student at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri, an institution of the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod (LCMS), during a schism in the LCMS. HISTORY “Seminex” is an abbreviation for Concordia Seminary in Exile (later Christ Seminary-Seminex) that existed from 1974-1987 after a schism in the LCMS. Seminex was formed due to the ongoing Fundamentalist-Modernist Controversary that was dividing Protestant churches in the United States. At issue were foundational disagreements on the authority of Scripture and the role of Christianity. In 1973, President John H. Tietjen (1928-2004), was accused of tolerating the teaching of "false doctrine" at Concordia Seminary and directed to purge the faculty, which he refused to do. The students and faculty protested the order and started Christ Seminary-Seminex (Seminary-in- Exile) in 1974, with Tietjen becoming Seminex president in 1975. The "walkout" resulted in 1976 in the formation of the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches (AELC), a predecessor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA), which Rev. Dr. Tietjen also helped to form in 1987-1988. Christ Seminary-Seminex was dissolved in 1989. 3 SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE This collection documents the activities of Seminex, also known as Seminary in Exile. It includes campus newspapers, newsletters, correspondence, pamphlets, position papers, booklets, and other miscellaneous items as well as some material from the Seminex 25th Anniversary celebration held in 1999. This collection includes information on Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS), Jacob Preus, Evangelical Lutherans in Mission (ELIM), Association of Evangelical Lutheran Church (AELC), New Lutheran Church, Pittsburgh Strategy, and Denominational Ministry Strategy (DMS/DMX) RESTRICTIONS This collection is open for research. REPRODUCTION Permission to publish, quote, or reproduce must be secured by the Seminary Archives. Contact the archivist for more information. PROCESSING NOTE This collection was originally processed and described in by Edwina Landry in May 2012 and reviewed by Roberta Brent in September 2012. The finding aid was reformatted and updated by Sheila Joy in May 2019. Ms. Joy added information pertaining to the collection’s provenance, history, scope and content, and processing note. ("Since You Asked," by Norma and Burton Everist, Lutheran Standard, September 1998, page 21). A layman or laywoman, in a query addressed to the Lutheran Standard, begins with these reasonable observations: "While teaching Sunday school I was surprised to read that Jonah was thought to be a parable. I see nothing in the text that suggests it couldn't be historical." The concerned correspondent then poses the obvious question: "How is it a parable?" A. A Critical View of Jonah In the response to this query the denial of the historicity of the Book of Jonah is, in itself, scarcely surprising. Both of the Everists, after all, are shown in a photograph above the column wearing clerical collars. The "Rev. Norma Cook Everist" is identified as a professor of church and ministry in Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque (Iowa), while the "Rev. Burton L. Everist is pastor of Grace Lutheran Church in East Dubuque (Illinois).

By John H. Tietjen. Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 1990. There is an advantage often in reviewing a book after it has received other reviews. There is also a bit of guilt involved in procrastinating so long. In the present case I am glad, because the reviews I have read of Dr. John Tietjen's Memoirs have not been kind or fair to him nor empathetic to his struggles and situation; and, with the exception of a review by Leigh Jordahl, they have shown little understanding of what was happening before, during, and after his tumultuous administration as president of Concordia Seminary in St. Louis. With this review I wish to give John Tietjen and his many colleagues, friends, and followers a fairer hearing and a fairer commentary on his memoirs. I am well qualified to do this because I was his colleague and next-door neighbor while he led the seminary and because I know the background and all the principals, all the issues and events of those turbulent years (1969-1974) which changed more than most realize-ar might care to admit-the LCMS and the lives of Tietjen and all of us involved.

  • The Theology of Due Process: the Adjudication Cases of Robert Preus in the LCMS and Rolf Preus in the ELS
1 The Theology of Due Process: The Adjudication Cases of Robert Preus in the LCMS And Rolf Preus in the ELS Sixth Annual ACELC Free Conference Redeemer Lutheran Church Nashville, Tennessee April 26, 2016 By Pastor Rolf Preus In asking me to speak about my father’s trials in the Missouri Synod and my trial in the ELS you are not asking for an objective analysis. How could I be objective? Nothing that happened to my father had more of an impact on me personally than his being fired as president and tenured professor at Concordia Theological Seminary in 1989, suspended from the Missouri Synod for trying to get his position back, and then denied his rightful position after prevailing in the church courts. My removal from the ELS and from River Heights Lutheran Church in East Grand Forks in 2006 was also a very significant event in my life. I am by no means impartial in regard to these events. Justice must be impartial. This is why it re- quires due process. Due process is a given among Americans. We trace it back to the Magna Carta where the king was placed under the authority of the law. Nobody is above the law. The American Revolution – a righteous cause and a just war – was fought on this principle. History, reason, culture, civil law, and natural law all teach due process. It is enshrined in the American Constitution. Both the fifth and fourteenth amendments guarantee that no one can be deprived of life, liberty, or property except by due process of law.

Beyond the “Plastic Text”: the Plot Thickens John Warwick Montgomery Abstract: A new approach to textual criticism is being advocated by a New Testament professor at the Concordia Seminary, St Louis, one of the two theological centers for the training of pastors in the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS). It is the conviction of the present essayist that this approach amounts to the destruction of the denomination’s commitment to scriptural inerrancy; returns biblical scholarship to the subjectivism of the higher criticism; and, if pursued, could cause that conservative church body to face again the theological difficulties that came close to destroying the LCMS in the Seminex controversy of the 1970’s. Readers may well recall my critique of Jeffrey Kloha’s “plastic text” essay.1 I have learned (unofficially) that church authorities have met with Dr. Kloha, that he admitted to no doctrinal problems, that the authorities agreed, but that a revised version of his essay was to be prepared. Almost a year has passed, but that revised version—if in fact prepared—does not seem to have been made available to the general or to the scholarly public. The seriousness of the issues involved for the historic doctrine of the inerrancy of the Holy Scriptures therefore requires additional, though brief, examination of Dr. Kloha’s biblical orientation. This will focus on his contribution to the Festschrift for his mentor, Professor J. Keith Elliott,2 with additional comments on Kloha’s “plastic text” essay and a reaction to his paper entitled “The Authority of the Scriptures,” delivered at the 2010 Concordia Seminary St.
