This enchanting villa belonged to one of the noblest families in Venice and was the birthplace of Doges, admirals of the Venetian fleet and also a queen, Caterina Cornaro, who reigned in Cyprus for 16 years. The villa, with its double loggia, is the building by Palladio 's which most influenced modern architecture worldwide. The interior is decorated with eighteenth century frescoes that hide Masonic symbols. 2. CA’ MARCELLO - Levada di Piombino Dese (PD) Visit to the house and the gardens – 90 mins. Built in the 16th century, this is one of the most beautiful and well-maintained examples of Palladian style villas. It is still lived in by some descendants of the noble Venetian Marcello family and it contains all the original 18th century furniture . Count Marcello will guide you through a visit of the centuries-old park - which contains long rows of old trees, statues, a large fish pond and a “colombaia” tower – and then in the interiors, through splendid living rooms, bedrooms and a ballroom with fresco paintings by G.B. Light refreshments with sweet and salty pastry 3. VILLA EMO - Fanzolo di Vedelago (TV) Visit to the house – 60 mins. Villa Emo offers a synthetic and emblematic picture of the Palladian architecture . Built by Andrea Palladio in 1558 for Leonardo Emo’s account and designed on the grid of the Roman centuriation , with its long stone ramp and the symmetric barchesse , it dominates the monumental complex of the park , of the rustic outline buildings and of the lands where the plantation of corn had its start. The clean austerity of the Doric order of the façade blends with the beauty of the rich internal decorative scenery , a work by Gianbattista Zelotti. Possible extension of the itinerary 4. VILLA DI MASER - Maser (TV) Visit to the house and to the carriages collection - 60 mins . Designed by Andrea Palladio in 1550 and decorated with the cycle of frescoes by Paolo Veronese and the stuccos by Alessandro Vittoria , it is one of the masterpieces of XVI century Venetian art. The Villa is surrounded by the green of its v ineyards and by continuing its wine production it keeps alive the old tradition of the “villa farm”. In 1996 the Villa, which is now the owners residence, was inscribed on the World Heritage list by UNESCO . In one of the adjoining buildings there is an interesting Collection of Carriages . Wine tasting of Villa di Maser estate's wines is available. Carriage Collection open from March to October. Visits to the villas allowed to a maximum of 25 people at a time every 30 minutes. TEATRO OLIMPICO - Vicenza Visit to the theater – 40 mins. The Teatro Olimpico, the last work of Andrea Palladio , came to an end after his death and reworks the structure of the Roman theater described by Vitruvius. It is the first indoor masonry theater in the world , decorated with wood, stucco and plaster. Inside you can admire the famous stage by Vincenzo Scamozzi . 6. PALAZZO BARBARAN DA PORTO - Vicenza Visit to the palace – 60 mins. This building is the only large city palace that Andrea Palladio was able to fully complete. The result was a sumptuous residence that allowed the commissioner to represent himself in the city as a leading exponent of the cultural elite of Vicenza. Since October 2012, the building is housing the Palladio Museum , the first museum dedicated to the figure of Andrea Palladio. The exhibition displays the life of the genius, his construction techniques, the history of its patrons but also offers an overview on life and culture of the sixteenth century. 7. VILLA VALMARANA AI NANI - Vicenza Visit to the house – 60 mins. Villa Valmarana ai Nani is a marvellous architectonic and artistic complex situated in a large XVIII century park, including the Palazzina (1669), the Foresteria (the guesthouse) and the stables (1720). The villa is also called “The House of the Dwarves” due to the 17 stone-statues of dwarves standing on the boundary wall. The Valmarana family still lives in this villa, whose frescoes by Giambattista and Giandomenico Tiepolo are universally recognized as one of the supreme expressions of the XVIII century and as the evidence of Tiepolo’s genius. Visitors travelling by bus need to walk 150 meters to reach the entrance of the villa. 8. VILLA ALMERICO CAPRA “LA ROTONDA” - Vicenza Visit to the house – 45 mins. This magnificent villa lays on the top of a hill, where the Riviera Berica starts to take shape. Each façade is embellished with a classical portico that seems to push itself by centrifugal force to the surrounding landscape. The decoration of the building is magnificent, with speeches by Lorenzo Rubini and Giambattista Albanian (statues), Anselmo Canera, Bernardino India, Alexander Maganza and later Louis Dorigny (pictorial devices). Remarkable is also the park, romantic setting, which opens to views of cultivated land all around. From April to October: Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday only the outdoors can be visited, while on Wednesday and Saturday are open to visitors both external and internal spaces. CASTELLO PORTO COLLEONI THIENE – Thiene (VI) Visit to house and the gardens – 60 mins. This enchanting gothic style building dates back to the XV century. It was built as a private residence and combines the features of a castle with those of a Venetian Palazzo. Inside, you can admire a remarkable cycle of frescoes painted by Veronese’s pupils Zelotti and Fasolo . The stables , designed by Muttoni, date back to the XVII century. Full of light, well designed and marked by two rows of red marble columns with putti made with Vicenza stone on the top, the stables certainly represent the most distinctive area of the whole complex. 10. VILLA GODI MALINVERNI - Lugo di Vicenza (VI) Visit to house – 60 mins. In this building Palladio shows his space concepts , which will be later elaborated with classical results after his travels to Rome. This villa is known as the first ever built by the great architect . The very simple body of the villa includes inside a wide set of paintings , first example of what will be the typical decoration of the noble villas in the Venetian mainland. These important paintings where created by three artists: Gualtiero Padovano, Giambattista Zelotti, Battista del Moro. 11. VILLA CALDOGNO - Caldogno (VI) Visit to house – 60 mins. When he was commissioned to design this building, Andrea Palladio was 34 years old and he still was tied to the workshop of Girolamo Pittoni and Giacomo Porlezza, but was increasingly operating in an independent and personal way. The building has a linear plan, dictated by the existing walls, with a central opening leading to the side rooms; the house reveals a system based on simplicity , which is however mitigated by the rich frescoes dated 1570, at the hands of Fasolo and Zelotti , with beautiful convivial scenes. 12. VILLA LOSCHI ZILERI - Monteviale (VI) ALTERNATIVE Visit to house and the gardens – 60 mins. 12b. VILLA TRISSINO MARZOTTO – Trissino (VI) Built on a former building of the XV century, Villa Visit to house and the gardens – 75 mins. Loschi Zileri, is a private home of fine artistic value Built as a fortress by the noble family of Trissino and important architecture, with a large fleet. Inside the villa one can admire the numerous during the Middle Ages, it was transformed into a villa in 400, assuming its present form in 700, after frescoes by Giambattista Tiepolo , commissioned by Nicola Loschi to celebrate the public recognition the intervention of Muttoni and Dal Pozzo .

    Palladio’s Influence In America Calder Loth, Senior Architectural Historian, Virginia Department of Historic Resources 2008 marks the 500th anniversary of Palladio’s birth. We might ask why Americans should consider this to be a cause for celebration. Why should we be concerned about an Italian architect who lived so long ago and far away? As we shall see, however, this architect, whom the average American has never heard of, has had a profound impact on the architectural image of our country, even the city of Baltimore. But before we investigate his influence we should briefly explain what Palladio’s career involved. Palladio, of course, designed many outstanding buildings, but until the twentieth century few Americans ever saw any of Palladio’s works firsthand. From our standpoint, Palladio’s most important achievement was writing about architecture. His seminal publication, I Quattro Libri dell’ Architettura or The Four Books on Architecture, was perhaps the most influential treatise on architecture ever written. Much of the material in that work was the result of Palladio’s extensive study of the ruins of ancient Roman buildings. This effort was part of the Italian Renaissance movement: the rediscovery of the civilization of ancient Rome—its arts, literature, science, and architecture. Palladio was by no means the only architect of his time to undertake such a study and produce a publication about it. Nevertheless, Palladio’s drawings and text were far more engaging, comprehendible, informative, and useful than similar efforts by contemporaries. As with most Renaissance-period architectural treatises, Palladio illustrated and described how to delineate and construct the five orders—the five principal types of ancient columns and their entablatures.

    Lionel Palladio’s Villa Emo: The Golden Proportion March Hypothesis Rebutted In a most thoughtful and persuasive paper Rachel Fletcher comes close to convincing that Palladio may well have made use of the ‘golden section’, or extreme and mean ratio, in the design of the Villa Emo at Fanzolo. What is surprising is that a visually gratifying result is so very wrong when tested by the numbers. Lionel March provides an arithmetic analysis of the dimensions provided by Palladio in the Quattro libri to reach new conclusions about Palladio’s design process.     Branko Mitroviü Andrea Palladio’s Villa Cornaro in Piombino Dese As for many of Palladio’s buildings, modern surveys of the Villa Cornaro in Piombino Dese do not exist, are incomplete, omit information about important aspects such as the use of the classical orders, or have been published without dimensions indicated in the plans. The analysis presented here is based on a June 2003 survey of the villa made by Steve Wassell, Tim Ross, Melanie Burke, and author Branko Mitroviü. In his treatise, Palladio listed his preferred room types: circular, square or rectangular with length-to-width ratios 2/1, 3/2, 4/3, 5/3 or 2/1. Half a century ago, this kind of speculative search for the comprehensive interpretation of Palladio’s proportional system received great impetus from Rudolf Wittkower’s Architectural Principles in the Age of Humanism. It is, however, important to differentiate between the derivation of certain proportional rules and their explanation. Wittkower asserted that the use of ornamentation—and especially the orders—did not matter in Palladio’s design process. Refuting this theory, Mitroviü argues that Palladio, in the early 1550, formulated a very different approach to the use of the orders, combining the principle of preferred room proportions and the use of a columnar system to determine the placement of walls. The proportions of the main sala and porticos are derived on the basis of the proportional rules for the order used; the proportions of the side rooms on the basis of preferred ratios. Ultimately, the result is that the mathematics of the orders became decisive for Palladio’s design principles and the use of proportions from the early 1550s.

    Villa Godi Malinverni The first villa of Andrea Palladio (1542) Lugo di Vicenza www.villagodi.com – [email protected] 0445.860561 -339.3429942 Villa Godi Malinverni villagodi 1 Andrea Palladio (1508-1580) Andrea Palladio was born in Padua in 1508, son of Pietro della Gondola who was a mill worker. After moving to Vicenza at a young age, Andrea took a job in the very active workshop of the so-called Pedemuro who specialized in cutting marble and sculpture. It was during this time of apprentice that Andrea got “noticed” by Giangiorgio Trissino, an aristocrat and refined intellectual of the Venetian Mainland. Trissino decided to assign Andrea the commission of restoring his wonderful Villa Cricoli, located just outside Vicenza. He also decided to take Andrea to Rome for his very first time. Thank to the ancient roman buildings that he could see not only in Rome, but also in Vicenza, Verona and Padua, and through the experience of the works of some of the most prominent architects such as Giulio Romano, Michele Sanmicheli, Sebastiano Serlio and 2 Jacopo Sansovino, Andrea was able to develop his own original style that we can still admire in some of his important works such as Villa Almerico, known as “La Rotonda” and Villa Barbaro in Maser, which was frescoed by Veronese. 3 The Architecture Villa Godi Malinverni is the very first villa Palladio realized, as quoted in his Four Books on Architecture. The commissioner and owner of the property was Gerolamo Godi, who had it built for his father Antonio as announced on a relief set just above the loggia by the entrance.

  • Villa Caldogno Si Trova Nel Comune Agricolo Omonimo, Una Decina Di
    Villa Caldogno si trova nel comune agricolo omonimo, una decina di chilometri a nord di Vicenza, poco distante dalla statale 46 del Pasubio, in una zona di bellezza rurale ben conservata. Il committente, Losco Caldogno, è un nobile vicentino affermatosi nel commercio della seta: ricevuta in eredità una tenuta agricola, decide di ristrutturare la fattoria affidandosi a un architetto che ha già dato buona prova di sé con certi suoi parenti, i Godi di Lugo di Vicenza (Villa Godi). Quando riceve l'incarico Andrea Palladio ha 34 anni ed è ancora ancora legato alla bottega di Girolamo Pittoni e Giacomo da Porlezza, ma opera in modo sempre più autonomo e personale. Il progetto non risulta incluso nei Quattro Libri dell'Architettura, l'opera del 1570 che riassume il pensiero del grande architetto, ma porta verosimilmente la sua firma per le analogie con edifici contemporanei di sicura paternità (villa Saraceno e villa Muzani). L'edificio ha pianta molto lineare, dettata dalle murature preesistenti, con vano centrale passante e ambienti laterali; una semplicità, che viene però stemperata dalla decorazione ad affresco del 1570, per mano del Fasolo e dello Zelotti, con belle scene conviviali d'atmosfera rinascimentale. Villa Caldogno è una delle architetture palladiane di più felice realtà odierna: sede della biblioteca comunale, offre i suoi spazi di rappresentanza a manifestazioni culturali ed eventi mondani. Da segnalare, anche, il recente recupero del giardino e della peschiera, oltre che un interessante intervento di architettura contemporanea sulla barchessa*, oggi adibita a spazio espositivo. Per un parallelo stilistico, nello stesso anno Palladio progetta Palazzo Thiene, villa Gazzotti, villa Pisani, villa Thiene e villa Valmarana.

I have explored the ways in which the rural landscape of the Palladian villas is produced by ICOMOS experts, local institution and inhabitants in the contemporary context of the suburban areas of the Veneto region in Italy.
