Pomona Pimpin Young The Return of Doggystyle records Hip Hop Artist Biography Pomona Pimpin Young comes from an infamous as well as famous family, Blood and Loyal all the same. The grandson of a preacher man and son to the streets. He will be familiar to many as half of “Thunder and Lighting," onethird of the Pomona City Ridaz, and all of Pimp On Entertainment. The world will finally get the proper introduction to Mr. Pomona Young. With over 15 years in the game, even more in the streets the owner of Pimp On Entertainment, Producer of adult movies “Daddy’s Side of the Closet” (nominated for 4 AVN awards). MTV best video game soundtrack nomination for the “True Crimes Streets of L.A”. video game. Pomona Young is featured in the movie “Who’s Making the Rules”along with comedian Miss Laura Hayes (Beauty Shop). He also can be seen in the movie “Dance Fu” featuring Cedric the Entertainer and Kel Mitchell. One of the first to be featured in Source Magazine’s Unsigned Hype. Hiphop’s west coast lyricist Suga Free combined forces with fellow Pomona representative Pomona P. Young to release three albums (Thunder and Lighting, Blood Makes You Related Loyalty makes you Family, and the upcoming The Capital P). Solo album The Oldest Profession as well as group album with The Pomona City Ridaz. Along with Snoop Dogg’s revival of his well known label now “The Return of Doggystyle Records” and the intertwining of entertainment companies, the new onset of Pimp On Entertainment along with RMM have breed The Pomona City Movement, bringing local gangsta together in the name of music. The history of Pomona P. Young is interesting to say the least: “Suga Free, Kokane, Shane Mosley and myself all came up from elementary school together. Me, SugaFree and Kokane came up from the dark alleys of gang banging and grew up into the game of the streets and maturing into entrepreneurs” as Young describes his journey. The combination of The Pimp On Entertainment catalog is jam packed with Humorous, thought provoking lyrics, performed by Pomona Pimpin Young and some of his comrades: George “Creator of PFunk” Clinton, Too Short, Bizzy Bone, Audio Push, Glasses Malone, Latoiya Williams, Kokane, Pomona City Ridaz, Suga Free, Cold 187, DJ Kali Slimm as well as a couple of surprise guest that are yet to be revealed. All appear throughout the Pimp On Entertainment Label. When asked to describe Pomona Pimpin Young’s sound as quoted “ I am game who give game to those who give you game. I bring the understanding from the Oldest Profession, the wisdom in Thunder in Lighting, the gangsta in Pomona City Ridaz, and with that The P will guide that new game generation to the Pomona City Movement. Political Rap Or Gangsta Rap?
Novitas-ROYAL, 2008, Vol.: 2 (1), 13-27. ISSN: 1307-4733 AFFILIATING WITH RAP MUSIC: POLITICAL RAP OR GANGSTA RAP? David L. CALDWELL Abstract Following the linguistic theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), for this paper, I will describe the interpersonal meanings expressed in the lyrics of political rap and gangsta rap. From SFL, I will apply Appraisal to a small corpus of 10 rap songs, comparing 5 political rap songs with 5 gangsta rap songs. Appraisal is a linguistic analytical framework designed to identify evaluation in language. Ultimately, I aim to apply Appraisal so as to describe the ways in which both political rap and gangsta rap actually 'promote' their respective themes, and in turn, hypothesise why it is that a white, suburban, middle-class youth audience seeks to affiliate with gangsta rap rather than political rap. But if you don’t see that it’s funny, it will scare the shit out of you.” – Ice-T Gangsta rap has generated greater public controversy than any popular music genre in American history. Concern over popular music’s effect on society is not new, nor exclusively American. In the 1920s, the popularity of jazz music generated heated public debates over its corruption of America’s segregated youth. Similarly, rock and roll caused great uproar during the 1950s; as did punk music in 1970s Great Britain. In each of these cases, the new music genres incited public fear for its negative impact on youth; specifically concerning its effect on youth’s attitudes towards sex, drugs, violence, and lawlessness. Notably, America’s greatest moral panics were incited by black music genres. Moreover, public controversies over black music have historically affected the political orientation of the American public. This makes the relationship between American political history and controversy over popular black music a particularly interesting topic for research.2 Music and politics have always been intrinsically linked.
