Political Rap Or Gangsta Rap?
Novitas-ROYAL, 2008, Vol.: 2 (1), 13-27. ISSN: 1307-4733 AFFILIATING WITH RAP MUSIC: POLITICAL RAP OR GANGSTA RAP? David L. CALDWELL Abstract Following the linguistic theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), for this paper, I will describe the interpersonal meanings expressed in the lyrics of political rap and gangsta rap. From SFL, I will apply Appraisal to a small corpus of 10 rap songs, comparing 5 political rap songs with 5 gangsta rap songs. Appraisal is a linguistic analytical framework designed to identify evaluation in language. Ultimately, I aim to apply Appraisal so as to describe the ways in which both political rap and gangsta rap actually 'promote' their respective themes, and in turn, hypothesise why it is that a white, suburban, middle-class youth audience seeks to affiliate with gangsta rap rather than political rap. But if you don’t see that it’s funny, it will scare the shit out of you.” – Ice-T Gangsta rap has generated greater public controversy than any popular music genre in American history. Concern over popular music’s effect on society is not new, nor exclusively American. In the 1920s, the popularity of jazz music generated heated public debates over its corruption of America’s segregated youth. Similarly, rock and roll caused great uproar during the 1950s; as did punk music in 1970s Great Britain. In each of these cases, the new music genres incited public fear for its negative impact on youth; specifically concerning its effect on youth’s attitudes towards sex, drugs, violence, and lawlessness. Notably, America’s greatest moral panics were incited by black music genres. Moreover, public controversies over black music have historically affected the political orientation of the American public. This makes the relationship between American political history and controversy over popular black music a particularly interesting topic for research.2 Music and politics have always been intrinsically linked.
