  • Rushing Fall Nips Mean Mary to Give Brown Fifth Straight
MONDAY, AUGUST 24, 2020 RUSHING FALL NIPS MEAN NO MORE DOUBTS, MAXIMUM SECURITY IS BACK MARY TO GIVE BROWN The Week in Review, by Bill Finley When Maximum Security (New Year=s Day) had to fight his FIFTH STRAIGHT DIANA way to a narrow victory in the GII San Diego H., it was fair to question whether or not this was the same horse that had been so outstanding throughout his career for trainer Jason Servis. Yes, he won that day, but the dominance and brilliance he had shown on so many occasions for a trainer who was subsequently indicted for allegedly doping his horses was not there. Then again, it seemed unwise to write him off after one race. His trip in the San Diego was not ideal as he broke on top, led and then was taken back off the pace to avoid a speed duel before coming on again in the stretch to narrowly prevail. It was also his first race in five months and trainer Bob Baffert said after the fact that he only had the horse 80% cranked. SATURDAY, JUNE 19, 2021 THIS SIDE UP: TAPWRIT WELL-REPRESENTED BY FIRST YEARLINGS AT FASIG-TIPTON JULY THE ONE THING TO by Katie Ritz After >TDN Rising Star' Essential Quality's sound victory in the ENVY MOST AT ASCOT GI Belmont S., his sire Tapit became one of only two stallions in history to produce four winners of that Classic test. In doing so, the champion sire did one of his other Belmont-winning sons, this one also a fellow Gainesway stallion, a favor by reinforcing the market's every-growing esteem for Tapit bloodlines. The achievements of Essential Quality and Tapit came at just the right time for Tapwrit (Tapit--Appealing Zophie, by Successful Appeal), who will have his first crop of yearlings hit the market this year. "Certainly Tapit's status in the Kentucky stallion ranks and the all-time ranks of stallions keeps getting elevated every year," Gainesway's Sean Tugel said. TUESDAY, JUNE 16, 2020 PREDICTABLY PAINFUL DESPITE MANY HARDSHIPS, BILLY TURNER TRIES TO STAY OPTIMISTIC by Bill Finley MARKET OPENS NEW CYCLE Seattle Slew=s trainer left the racetrack in 2016, moved to Florida and settled in for what he had thought would be a quiet retirement. It may have started out that way, but in late April Billy Turner=s life started to come apart. Living at the Ocala Jockey Club in Reddick, Florida, Turner suffered a freakish injury that caused him to break his neck. That was bad enough, but it was only one part of the story. While being treated in the hospital, it was discovered that he had prostate cancer and that it had spread to his bones. Somehow, Turner has managed to stay upbeat. AMy spirits are very good because I have some very good friends in this part of the country,@ he said.
