IAHC Newsletter, May, 2011 Page 2 President’s Message (continued from page 1) Bazy Tankersley has always said that INDRAFF was her ‘dream horse’ and her accolades fill several pages. There are also many interesting photos of his get which owners from all over submitted for inclu- sion in the article. It’s a really nice thing – I would love to see it in some of today’s magazines! Once again “All roads lead to Estes Park” – where the annual Colorado show would again be holding the (4 th annual) Nationals Championship classes. The IAHA page is a request from the Field Secretary, Col Kester, whom (according to the information) “feels it is absolutely essential that the International build up a library of stories and pictures concerning your Arabian horses.” The primary use of the articles would be for breed promo- tion. Anyone was welcome to submit their article. From the Bear Claw Ranch collection, from the 1945 March/April issue of The Western Horseman, are pages that reflect the manner in which Arabians were advertised in that time. On the right is an ad showing the Arabian stallion Godolphin, owned by Mr. & Mrs. C. H. Billington. Below left shows the cover which featured the straight Spanish imported stallion *RAS-EL-AYN, one of several horses purchased by the Drapers while in Spain. The Drapers had ventured to Spain to research oranges grown there with the idea that the type and methods used successfully there might be of use on the Califor- nia citrus ranch. They purchased another stallion that Edna Draper believed to be poisoned and never made it to the U.S. Probably best known in the group were *NAKKLA and *MEMPHIS, mares often seen in today’s Kellogg and other West Coast domestic-bred pedigrees. In response to a query of “fun” classes for shows and gymkhanas, a Mrs. Russell from Canada sent a list of classes and their descrip- tions including the wheelbarrow race, egg & spoon, balloon spearing and rescue race. The 12 listed classes were ones she enjoyed as a child in England. (cont., next page) IAHC Newsletter, May, 2011 Page 3 President’s Message (continued from page 3) On the right is an interesting idea! Promotion in the mid 40’s was certainly different than today’s! Several pages of classified ads offered horses of all bloodlines, the new edition of Lady Wentworth’s Authentic Arabian Horse and advertising rates: a full page with one photo, in color was $125.00 for a one-time insertion and $45.00 on a 12-month contract! Ah, for those days again…. An ad from Travelers Rest Arabian Horses! Note the telephone number...its been a long time since we have seen that configuration! “Pull Up a Stump and We’ll Tell You About This Offer” Judge this colt as growing out sound and in relatively good conformation until he is two years old. What price will we put on him as a two-year old? We are posting that price with Graham Dean, Publisher. The Western Horseman, P.O. Box 931, Reno, Nevada. Send your bids directly to him . The first answer received by him that is within $50 of our asking price will receive an order on W. Roy Rhodes of Kansas City for one of his famous Western Saddles, made to your measure. Penny Wardlaw, IAHC President IAHC Newsletter, May, 2011 Page 4 http://www.cafepress.com/insallahahc IAHC has established a Café Press Store where many items are available decorated with the artwork of some of our members and other artists with whom we have been licensed or received permission to use their art. The small commission we received on each item sold is one of the very few ways in which this Club can raise funds to support our agendas for the Arabian horse world-wide. We have provided “special” items for the Region 2 Sport Horse & Dressage Championships and for the AHA Sport Horse National. We can also use your own art and/or logo, put in the script you wish and you will have something uniquely yours. Below, are examples of items that are available.
