John Diggens, the Bobart of the Piddle Valley, has selflessly humoured my growing obsession with Early Modern gardening. 1 Abstract Abraham Cowley’s Plantarum Libri Sex (1662 and 1668), a polymetric Latin poem of some 7,000 lines by a major English poet of the Interregnum and early Restoration, exists in no modern edition or translation and has received very little critical attention. This thesis demonstrates that the Plantarum deserves wider study. Showing how the work’s complex and nuanced interaction with classical intertexts is brought to bear on contemporary literary and political concerns, it aims to establish the poem as an important work by a writer at the heart of seventeenth-century literary and political activity. In the Introduction, I briefly describe Cowley’s life and work before contextualising the Plantarum in terms of neo-Latin and English literature and surveying existing scholarship. Chapter 1 looks at the elegiac books 1-2 (1662) in terms of their Ovidian intertext, relating Cowley’s poetics of change both to the Fasti and Metamorphoses and to the political upheavals of the mid-seventeenth century. Chapter 2 considers books 3-4 in terms of their Horatianism and of the allusions to Caroline masque generated through use of the Chloris/Flora/Henrietta Maria identification. Rather than a Royalist retreat, Flora’s court represents a Stoic negotium animi where the nature of monarchy is energetically debated. In Chapter 3 I show how Cowley juxtaposes the natural resources of the New World against the cultural heritage of the Old. I look at the combination of classical intertextuality and British national identity in his account of the forest, showing how he depicts the Stuart monarchy as its guarantor and guardian. Notwithstanding this well-known fact, co-ordinated modern scholarship on the Latin poetry, poetics, and drama of the Old Society is patchy. We begin with ques- tions of sources, reception, and style. Then recent work on epic, didactic, and dramatic poetry is considered, and finally, on a handful of “minor” genres. Some genres and regions are well studied (drama in the German-speaking lands), others less so. There is a general scarcity of bilingual editions and commentaries of many “classic” Jesuit authors which would, in the first instance, bring them to the attention of mainstream modern philologists and literary historians, and, in the longer term, provide a firmer basis for more synoptic and synthetic studies of Jesuit intertextuality and style(s).     The Pulley -- Summary Metaphysical poets belonged to the 17th century. The works of the metaphysical poets are marked by philosophical exploration, colloquial diction, ingenious conceits, irony and metrically flexible lines. They wrote poems on love, religion and mortality. The metaphysical poets described these topics through unusual comparisons, frequently employing unexpected similies and metaphors in displays of wit. John Donne is the foremost figure along with George Herbert, Andrew Marvell, Abraham Cowley, Richard Crashaw and Henry Vaughan. Conceit is a striking, strained or affected modes of expression. Conceits are common in Elizabethan poetry and metaphysical verse. Metaphysical conceits are bolder and more ingenious. For example, Donne uses “stiff twin compasses” to express the souls of two lovers. ‘The Pulley’ by George Herbert is a metaphysical poem. It is one of Herbert’s best-known poems. In the first stanza, the speaker describes the creation of mankind. The speaker is retelling the story of creation with a few more details. After the creation of mankind, God decided to “pour on him” “a glass of blessings.” The world’s riches, which lie dispersed, have come together in to a span. Strength made a way and beauty followed. Then came wisdom, honour and pleasure. When everything was over, God made a stay. Of all his treasure, rest lies in the bottom. God is not interested in giving ‘rest’ to humanity. Had God bestowed the jewel of ‘rest’on humanity, man would His gifts instead of Him. They would spend their time worshipping nature and not God. They should appreciate ‘the God of Nature.’ So, both should be losers.

The Features of Metaphysical Poetry With a rebellious spirit, the metaphysical poets tried to break away from the conventional fashion of the Elizabethan love poetry. The diction is simple as compared with that of the Elizabethan or the Neoclassic periods, and echoes the words and cadences of common speech. The imagery is drawn from the actual life. The form is frequently that of an argument with the poet's beloved, with God, or with himself. AUTOGRAPH FAIR COPIES HILTON KELLIHER ABRAHAM COWLEY'S elegy 'On the Death of Mr.Crashaw' was his tribute to a fellow- poet with whom he had exchanged verses at Cambridge and whom he had later befriended in exile at Paris where, according to Anthony Wood, he presented the destitute Crashaw to Henrietta Maria. The elegy has generally been recognized as one of Cowley's finest poems: 'In these verses', wrote Johnson, 'there are beauties which common authors may justly think not only above their attainment, but above their ambition.' A calli- graphic fair copy by Cowley himself, representing a slightly earlier stage of composition than the text printed in the 'Miscellanies' of 1656, has now come to light among the papers of the Marquess of Ormonde, on loan to the British Museum and then to the British Library (Department of Manuscripts Loan 37/6) since 1950 (fig. i). In the Calendar of Ormonde Manuscripts' that was compiled by John T.Gilbert in 189s niay be found a detailed description of the collection of verses addressed at various stages of his career to James Butler (1610-88), Marquess and subsequently ist Duke of Ormonde. Endorse- ments made on the separate sheets that comprise this collection show that they were brought together by Sir George Lane, later Viscount Lanesborough, who was private secretary to the Marquess when Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and, in i6sSi to Charles II. Many of these verses are transcribed in the autographs of their rather obscure authors, while the better-known topical pieces are generally commonplace-copies.

    Metaphysical poets 1 Metaphysical poets The metaphysical poets is a term coined by the poet and critic Samuel Johnson to describe a loose group of British lyric poets of the 17th century, whose work was characterized by the inventive use of conceits, and by speculation about topics such as love or religion. These poets were not formally affiliated; most of them did not even know or read each other. Origin of the name In the chapter on Abraham Cowley in his Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets (1779-81), Samuel Johnson refers to the beginning of the seventeenth century in which there "appeared a race of writers that may be termed the metaphysical poets". This does not necessarily imply that John Donne, one of the most famous he intended metaphysical to be used in its true sense, in that he was metaphysical poets. probably referring to a witticism of John Dryden,[1] who said of John Donne: "He affects the metaphysics, not only in his satires, but in his amorous verses, where nature only should reign; and perplexes the minds of the fair sex with nice speculations of philosophy, when he should engage their hearts, and entertain them with the softnesses of love. Probably the only writer before Dryden to speak of a certain metaphysical school or group of metaphysical poets is Drummond of Hawthornden (1585–1649), who in one of his letters speaks of "metaphysical Ideas and Scholastical Quiddities."[2] Nor was Johnson's assessment of 'metaphysical poetry' particularly flattering, since he wrote: The metaphysical poets were men of learning, and, to show their learning was their whole endeavour; but, unluckily resolving to show it in rhyme, instead of writing poetry, they only wrote verses, and, very often, such verses as stood the trial of the finger better than of the ear; for the modulation was so imperfect, that they were only found to be verses by counting the syllables..

His mother was wholly given to works of devotion, but it happened that there lay in her parlour a copy of The Faerie Queene. This became the favourite reading of her son, and he had twice devoured it all before he was sent to school. As early as 1628, that is, in his tenth year, he composed his Tragicall History of Piramus and Thisbe, an epic romance written in a six-line stanza, a style of his own invention. It is not too much to say that this work is the most astonishing feat of imaginative precocity on record; it is marked by no great faults of immaturity, and possesses constructive merits of a very high order. Two years later the child wrote another and still more ambitious poem, Constantia and Philetus, being sent about the same time to Westminster School. Here he displayed extraordinary mental precocity and versatility, and wrote in his thirteenth year the Elegy on the Death of Dudley, Lord Carlton. These three poems of considerable size, and some smaller ones, were collected in 1633, and published in a volume entitled Poetical Blossoms, dedicated to the head master of the school, and prefaced by many laudatory verses by schoolfellows. The author at once became famous, although he had not, even yet, completed his fifteenth year. His next composition was a pastoral comedy, entitled Love's Riddle, a marvelous production for a boy of sixteen, airy, correct and harmonious in language, and rapid in movement.

    1 Subject: ENGLISH Class: B.A. Part 1 Honours, Paper – 1,Group B Topic: The Metaphysical Poetry By: Prof. Sunita Sinha Head, Department of English Women’s College Samastipur L.N.M.U., Darbhanga THE METAPHYSICAL POETRY INTRODUCTION The term "Metaphysical Poet" was first coined by the literary critic and poet, Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) in his book Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets (1179-1781) to describe a loose group of 17th-century English poets whose work was characterized by the inventive use of conceits, and by a greater emphasis on the spoken rather than lyrical quality of their verse. These poets were- John Donne, George Herbert, Richard Crashaw, Andrew Marvell and Henry Vaughan Dr. Johnson's assessment of 'metaphysical poetry' was not at all flattering. He spoke about them in a derogatory manner: “The metaphysical poets were men of learning, and, to show their learning was their whole endeavor… The most heterogeneous ideas are yoked by violence together; nature and art are ransacked for illustrations, comparisons, and allusions; their learning instructs, and their subtilty surprises; but the reader commonly thinks his improvement dearly bought, and, though he sometimes admires, is seldom pleased.” Metaphysical poetry represents a sharp break with the conventional poetry of the Elizabethan period. Most of the Elizabethan verses are decorative and flowery in their quality. But metaphysical poetry has been differentiated from the other kinds 2 by its peculiar “Metaphysical Conceits.” The highly intellectualized poetry of the Metaphysical poets was not appreciated in the 18th and 19th centuries by the Romantics who gave more importance to Emotion than to Reason/Intellect.
