Moreover, I want to thank the Brandman University faculty and staff for developing a doctoral program well defined in content to prepare leaders to create transformational change. iv ABSTRACT The Effects of Cyberbullying as it Relates to Social Media: A California High School Assistant Principal and High School Counselor Perspective by Rodney C. Stone Purpose. The purpose of this study was to identify and describe the perceptions of high school assistant principals and high school counselors regarding the impact of cyberbullying on high school students in southern California. The study also sought to identify strategies and prevention programs essential to counteract cyberbullying as perceived by high school assistant principals and high school counselors. Methodology. A qualitative methodology was used with data collected through interviews and review of artifacts. High school assistant principals and high school counselors voiced their perspectives and personal views relative to the strategies and prevention methods to counteract cyberbullying. The interviews and artifacts were coded and analyzed for common themes and patterns. Findings. The findings revealed both high school assistant principals and high school counselors demonstrated efforts to counteract cyberbullying among current and future high school students to be better prepared for cyberbullying incidents. Both current and future students also need training in critical thinking processes that influence them to be resilient against cyberbullying. Conclusions. The results of this study found school districts need assistance in designing leadership development strategies and support systems for students to counteract cyberbullying. Suicide prevention and resiliency training programs are also needed for students and to develop critical thinkers within the community. v Recommendations. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended school districts implement a conflict resolution training program, increase the level of consequences for students who cyberbully, offer resiliency classes for students and parents, increase collaboration between high school assistant principals and high school counselors, implement mandatory suicide prevention classes in school orientations and parent workshops, hold students accountable for their behavior, provide peer-led training intervention and prevention events, increase the awareness and knowledge of netiquette among     OCSA BULLYING/CYBER BULLYING/HATE VIOLENCE POLICY All students and employees of the Orange County School of the Arts have the right to work, to attend school, and to participate in the educational process in a safe environment that is free from bullying and hate-motivated behavior. Every effort shall be made to promote mutual respect among students and staff and between and among students to encourage safe and harmonious relations that support human dignity and equality. The OCSA Board of Trustees recognizes the harmful effects of bullying on student learning and school attendance and desires to provide safe school environments that protect students from physical and emotional harm. School employees shall establish student safety as a high priority and shall not tolerate bullying of any student. No student or group of students shall, through physical, written, verbal, or other means, harass, sexually harass, threaten, intimidate, cyberbully, cause bodily injury to, or commit hate violence against any other student or school personnel. Students who have been bullied or cyberbullied shall promptly report such incidents to any staff member. Behavior or statements that degrade, intimidate, and/or harm an individual on the basis of his/her race, ethnicity, culture, heritage, immigration status, gender, sexual orientation, physical/mental attributes, religious beliefs or practices shall not be tolerated. Bullying in any form or platform, repeatedly picking fights with, or repeatedly taunting another person shall not be tolerated. This policy applies to all OCSA students and employees. This policy applies to all acts related to school activity or school attendance occurring within a school under the jurisdiction of the Executive Director of the Orange County School of the Arts.

Miller thnic diversity currently preoccupies a sizable segment of U.S. society, from employers and school administrators, who must E manage diversity within institutional settings, to politicians and social scientists, who must formulate policies for addressing the com- peting claims of different ethnic groups. The issue of diversity is fraught with anxiety. Ethnic conflicts in many countries around the world attest to the potential for relations across cultural boundaries to go seriously and destructively awry. Moreover, Americans' own struggles with race have left many pessimistic about the prospects for achieving positive, stable relations between ethnic groups. With new waves of immigrants coming from Asia and Latin America and higher birth rates among mi- nority than majority groups, the U.S. population is becoming, and will continue to become, ethnically and culturally more diverse. Thus, how to promote positive relations across group boundaries is a question of paramount importance. Thirty or forty years ago, psychologists thought they had an answer to this question. The contact hypothesis posited that if members of dif- ferent ethnic groups interact with each other on an equal-status basis in pursuit of common goals, positive intergroup relations will result (Allport 1954). This hypothesis was so appealing that it spawned hun- dreds of studies designed to test and refine its claims. The results have been less than encouraging. Yes, equal-status contact can have positive results, but only if many conditions obtain: the contact should be mean- ingful and have the potential to extend beyond the immediate situation; the individuals should be as similar as possible on all dimensions be- sides group membership; the contact should be voluntary, extended in duration, and varied across contexts; and so on (for a more complete list, see Stephan 1985).

Still, cyberbullying presents new concerns... “Sticks and Stones” New concerns include: (1) The Internet makes bullying harder to escape; (2) The Internet allows the perpetrator to bully without having to confront his or her victim; (3) The number of potential witnesses can be exponentially higher; and (4) There is the possibility that comments and images/ videos can go viral. Hate speech online can also be called bullying or harassment. Sweden does not have a distinction between hate speech and hate crime that we know of. The Discrimination Act includes discrimination on the basis of sex, transgender identity or expression, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and age. People can report everything that is against the law at the police station or by phone. Reports will be investigated by the police. In 2014 there were almost 6270 reports of hate crime in Sweden. That was an increase with 14 % compared to 2015.
