They are notated as they are in common practice music, with courtesy accidentals included for the convenience of the performers. Tremolos are notated in relation to beaming. For instance: the tremolo represented by two slashes across a beamed note is equal to the tremolo represented by three slashes across an un-beamed note. Note-less stems are used in measure 32 (cello) and 34 (viola) of the first movement to illustrate a glissando all the way up the string. It is the composer’s intention that in those two instances, the performer begins the glissando on the notated pitch, and slides up the full length of the string. Tremolos are tied together using dotted ties as a way of indicating when a given note should not be rearticulated. In measure 33 of the third movement, the direction “synced” refers to the tremolos in the violin II and viola parts. It is the intention of the composer that the two instruments remain in rhythmic synchronization for the duration of the held tremolo. Furthermore, for the rest of the movement the tremolos should have a tasteful amount of rhythmic character to them, as it is the hope that the tremolos will fuel the energy of the piece, and highlight the pulse in an interesting way. In the third movement, the tremolos should be as fast as possible beginning in measure 102. This piece takes on many forms and aims to provoke an entire spectrum of immediate sensual reactions. As such, the performers should feel at liberty to apply their full range of interpretive prowess, and should not hold back under any circumstances. 1 I.
