Our revolving sign on Troost Avenue beacons the words “God’sr Word for Today’s World.” Out mission statement: “Nazarene Publishing House, commissioned by the Church of the Nazarene, exists to build and nurture Christ’s church through the ministry of publishing communication resources.” Our purpose rings clear. We commit ourselves to provid­ ing the members of our church and the greater Christian community with resources for carrying out the Great Com­ mission: “Go and make disciples.” I wish all of you had the privilege of witnessing up close, as we do, the creativity and commitment required to take an idea from concept to ministry. It may be a musical or piano arrangement, an article or a book, a Sunday School lesson or a teacher training video, a magazine or a three-act play. The path from concept to development to production to distribu­ tion is an adventure in ministry performed by loving hands in the NPH partnership. Much of this work happens through a series of partner­ ships NPH shares with various divisions and ministries at Nazarene Headquarters. Sunday School Ministries creates and edits the WordAc- tion Sunday School materials, which brings holiness curricu­ lum to a new level of excellence. This children’s and youth curriculum debuts in the fall of 1993. The Communications Division continues to enhance and expand the Beacon Hill Press of Kansas City book line. We continue to receive strong affirmation about the quality of the Herald of Holiness. Publications International creates the French, Portuguese, Spanish, and intercultural English resources. The World Mission Division keeps us informed and in­ volved through books, World Mission magazine, and period­ icals. The Nazarene Publishing House cooperates with the divi­ sions of Stewardship and Finance and Church Growth in providing vital ministry and program resources. Lillenas Publishing Company has a creative staff that cre­ ates the multiple music and drama products that enhance our worship. Our new hymnal, Sing to the Lord, will be in your hands in the spring of 1993. Our writers from all over the world are also important partners with NPH. Their skills and inspiration fuel our presses. We were touched by her trust and have tried to carry out her wishes. How serious a responsibility was entailed became apparent as soon as we examined the material. One thing in particular impressed us: Marguerite Teillard's self-effacement. In presenting the letters she had omitted every- thing that concerned herself personally and concentrated on allowing the personality ofPere Teilhard to emerge. We felt, however, that it would be impossible to understand the birth and development of Pere Teilhard's thought if the part played by Marguerite were not appreciated. Her modesty and her sense of dignity caused her to withdraw into the background, but her contribution, from the very nature of her character, was of capital importance; and now that death has released her from any possible suspicion of vanity or pride we feel that her personality should no longer be left in self-imposed obscurity.

No decent person likes to watch someone else crash and burn, especially a kid. Yet, I found myself in a position for eight years where I had to do just that. I knew it was coming every year and it was never pleasant. Nor did I ever really get used to it or hardened by it. So, what was the position? It was that of a high school basketball coach at an inner city high school. Every year in the early fall, we began the process of forming that season’s basketball team. This was always a time of big dreams, high expectations, and big talk. Usually the biggest talk came from the new young players or the new kids who had transferred to our school. As the process began, we would spend two weeks trying to get the kids to quit. We would run them more than most of them had ever run in their life.

Compassion partners with local churches to sponsor impoverished children right in their own neighborhoods and communities. That was my family, and today, each of you will have the opportunity to partner by sponsoring a child. By sponsoring a child, you will ensure that they have the opportunity to get proper nutrition, education, and leadership training. You will also be able to write letters, encourage, and perhaps even visit them in their home country. Most importantly, these children will be involved in a local church and have the opportunity to respond to the gospel of Christ. (A majority of the children available to sponsor today are from regions where the Summit has an ongoing ministry - the Dominican Republic, Kenya, and Indonesia.) We have a vision of planting 1,000 churches in our generation. This is one way that we're giving EVERYONE the opportunity to take part in that vision and our mission internationally.     On the Road to the Origin with Darwin, Hooker, and Gray DUNCAN M. PORTER Department of Biology Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Blacksburg, Virginia 24061 INTRODUCTION I began this paper intending to write a short essay with the title "Plant Geography in The Origin of Species." However, I find that it has evolved into something quite different. Since the summer of 1989, when the original title was chosen, I have read some unpublished letters at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and the Gray Herbarium of Harvard University that led me to substitute the present title. Much of the present paper now consists of excerpts from letters between Charles Darwin (1809-1882), Asa Gray (1810-1888), and Joseph Dalton Hooker (1817-1911). They are relevant to my subject because Darwin depended upon Gray and Hooker, botanists respectively at Harvard and Kew, for much of the information on phytogeography in the Origin. I intend to pursue that theme in a later publication. I do not apologize for these long excerpts, as I think that the story is best told in the words of the protagonists. Also, they show that Darwin was not operating in a vacuum. Letters of Asa Gray was published in 1893 (J. Gray 1893), and Life and Letters of Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker in 1918 (L. Huxley 1918). In spite of the large numbers of letters contained in these four volumes, many of the letters that I quote from have never been published. Apparently, they were not deemed of sufficient interest to the general audience that was presumed to comprise the readers of such collections.
