    Measurements of the horizontal coefficient of restitution for a superball and a tennis ball Rod Crossa) Physics Department, University of Sydney, Sydney, NSW 2006 Australia ͑Received 9 July 2001; accepted 20 December 2001͒ When a ball is incident obliquely on a flat surface, the rebound spin, speed, and angle generally differ from the corresponding incident values. Measurements of all three quantities were made using a digital video camera to film the bounce of a tennis ball incident with zero spin at various angles on several different surfaces. The maximum spin rate of a spherical ball is determined by the condition that the ball commences to roll at the end of the impact. Under some conditions, the ball was found to spin faster than this limit. This result can be explained if the ball or the surface stores energy elastically due to deformation in a direction parallel to the surface. The latter effect was investigated by comparing the bounce of a tennis ball with that of a superball. Ideally, the coefficient of restitution ͑COR͒ of a superball is 1.0 in both the vertical and horizontal directions. The COR for the superball studied was found to be 0.76 in the horizontal direction, and the corresponding COR for a tennis ball was found to vary from Ϫ0.51 to ϩ0.24 depending on the incident angle and the coefficient of sliding friction. © 2002 American Association of Physics Teachers. ͓DOI: 10.1119/1.1450571͔ I. That strange game called lawn tennis in- filtrated the Australian colonies in the mid 1870s when the wealthy, in emulation of English cousins,rigged nets in their city gardens or in the grounds of their country estates and invited long skirted ladies and men in cummerbunds, white shirts, and formal ties to tennis parties. The flight of the balls over nets five feet or more from the ground was demure and accompanied by giggles, gasps and gentlemanly shouts. By the 188Os, those whose enjoyment of these physical dashes required for its satisfaction something more codified in the way of a game were beginning to establish clubs for players of like mind. Their endeavours were guided by the All England Croquet Club at Wimbledon which had incorporated the words Lawn Tennis in-its title, in 1877,and which staged its first Gentlemen's Singles Championship under rules which modified those of the modern game's inventor,Major Wingfield,and allowed for a net still five feet high at the posts,a rectangular court rather than Wingfield's hour glass, and the modern system of scoring. That all occurred about a century ago. So it is the season- for celebrating the birth of the game, for taking stock, for writing the centenary histories of Australia's earliest tennis clubs. In 1878, the Melbourne Cricket Club added an asphalt court and a tennis club as an adjunct to cricket,and laid a grass court in 1880.

    Modeling Spatiotemporal Relationships between Moving Objects for Event Tactics Analysis in Tennis Videos Wei-Ta Chu and Wen-Ho Tsai Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering National Chung Cheng University, Taiwan [email protected], [email protected] Abstract Evolution of spatial relationships between objects often provides important clues for semantic video analysis. We present a symbolic representation that describes spatiotemporal characteristics and facilitates tactics detection based on string matching. To find typical spatiotemporal patterns of a targeted tactic, we organize training sequences as a tree, and effectively discover frequent patterns from the structure. Tactics detection is conducted by comparing a given test sequence with these frequent patterns. To realize the proposed idea, we develop elaborate audio/video processes to transform broadcasting tennis videos into symbolic sequences, and comprehensively tackle event detection and tactics analysis. We experiment on ten most important tennis championships in the year 2008, and report promising detection results on seven events/tactics. We demonstrate not only the effectiveness of the proposed methods, but also study the impacts brought by the results of tactics analysis.
