    Song, State, Sawa Music and Political Radio between the US and Syria Beau Bothwell Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Beau Bothwell All rights reserved ABSTRACT Song, State, Sawa: Music and Political Radio between the US and Syria Beau Bothwell This dissertation is a study of popular music and state-controlled radio broadcasting in the Arabic-speaking world, focusing on Syria and the Syrian radioscape, and a set of American stations named Radio Sawa. I examine American and Syrian politically directed broadcasts as multi-faceted objects around which broadcasters and listeners often differ not only in goals, operating assumptions, and political beliefs, but also in how they fundamentally conceptualize the practice of listening to the radio. Beginning with the history of international broadcasting in the Middle East, I analyze the institutional theories under which music is employed as a tool of American and Syrian policy, the imagined youths to whom the musical messages are addressed, and the actual sonic content tasked with political persuasion. At the reception side of the broadcaster-listener interaction, this dissertation addresses the auditory practices, histories of radio, and theories of music through which listeners in the sonic environment of Damascus, Syria create locally relevant meaning out of music and radio. Drawing on theories of listening and communication developed in historical musicology and ethnomusicology, science and technology studies, and recent transnational ethnographic and media studies, as well as on theories of listening developed in the Arabic public discourse about popular music, my dissertation outlines the intersection of the hypothetical listeners defined by the US and Syrian governments in their efforts to use music for political ends, and the actual people who turn on the radio to hear the music.

Marteijn PhD Candidate, School of Divinity, Centre for the Study of World Christianity, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, UK [email protected] Abstract Palestinian Christians are a minority of approximately 1 or 2% in a context marked by conflict, expulsions, and ongoing emigration. Despite all this, Palestinian Christians have made a significant contribution to society in the spheres of politics, the arts, sci- ence, and social welfare. Moreover, from the 1980s onwards, this Palestinian context of struggle has also been the source for the emergence of a socially and politically committed contextual theology. This article analyses the development of Palestinian contextual theology by examining theological publications by Palestinian theologians. It identifies liberation, reconciliation, witness, ecumenism, and interfaith-dialogue as some of the dominant theological themes. What unites these publications is a theological engagement with the Palestinian Christian identity in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Although criminalized globally in the past, graffiti art has the potential to repaint walls of society with opinions and art, especially in the Middle East. This textual analysis paper examines the graffiti artwork of five young Lebanese artists, who did not experience the civil war, but grew up in its aftermath and whose perspective add the religious and social aspects needed to authenticate a reconciliation narrative. Using theoretical discussion of both reconciliation and of Ricœur’s hermeneutic phenomenology one can interpret the Lebanese narratives of reconciliation through the images of acknowledgment and acceptance of a collective past, the image of reparation of destroyed relationships through similar cultural symbols, and a commitment to a future of coexistence and peace.

The emergence of public aspirations leading to tragedy and a devastating explosion of 2,750 tons of Ammonium Nitrate. This tragedy caused 100 victims were died and thousands people were injured. This phenomenon made many society from around the world contribute to express Beirut‟s freedom including Josep Harb through his poetry entitle “li Beirut”. This study aims to describe nationalism form in „li Beirut‟ poetry based on Norman Fairclough‟s theory, and show its impact on natinalism‟s reader as literary connoisseurs. This study employs a qualitative descriptive design. Data is collected by reading and taking notes techniques and then analyzed based on Miles and Huberman model that contained data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the portrait of nationalism in li Beirut poetry are expressions of love and praising for Beirut, also compassions and hopes for Beirut. The impact that has an effect on readers' nationalism is an attitude of prioritizing unity and brotherhood, as well as an optimistic attitude to improve the nation. McNeill, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This dissertation narrates Lebanon’s environmental history through the lens of the country’s World War I famine. My analysis uses the catastrophe as a prism through which to reconstruct Lebanese agrarian life. Between 1887 and 1914, as many as 150,000 Lebanese migrated to the Americas. On the war’s eve, remittances from abroad formed the largest source of income for the Lebanese, followed by the export of silk. Wartime conditions made both sources of income all but impossible to obtain and the ensuing famine exposed the vulnerabilities of Lebanon’s reliance on global flows of humans and capital. One in three Lebanese perished during the war. Years of demographic instability became a crisis of excess mortality once the war denied the population access to its livelihood and the safety valve of migration. By taking the human relationship with the rest of nature as its unit of analysis, my study posits broad continuities between the late Ottoman period and the French Mandate era whereas most studies have seen World War I, and the subsequent imposition of French colonialism, as a decisive rupture.

    Remembering Zaki Nassif: A Lebanese Musical Odyssey By Sami Asmar Born in 1916 in the town of Mashghara in Lebanon's Biqa Valley, Nassif studied music composition and piano at the American University of Beirut . After his studies were interrupted by World War II, he continued to pursue music at the hands of a European professor at St. Joseph University. In the early 1950s, under the French Mandate, Nassif joined the music staff of the Near East ( Al‐Sharq al‐ Adna ) Radio station under the direction of Palestinian musician Sabri al‐Sharif. That station had moved from Jerusalem to Cyprus and was based in Beirut before closing down but, during a brief period, brought together many musicians who built the foundation of the modern popular music genre in the region. In the mid 1950s, lyricists/composers Asi and Mansur Rahbani, singers/composers Wadi al‐Safi, Zaki Nassif, and Filimon Wahbe, and singers FairuZ, Sabah, and Nasri Shamsiddine, along with other contemporaries such as Tawfiq al‐Basha, Halim al‐ Rumi (whose daughter Majida later sang many of Nassif compositions), long‐time flautist Joseph Ayoub, and percussionist Michel Mirhej Baklouk, most of whom met at the Near East Radio station, became a core group credited with the establishment of the modern popular Lebanese song with the start of the Baalbek festivals, set in the Roman ruins of Baalbek. Zaki Nassif's career reached national recognition with his early contribution to the Baalbek Festival with the song “Tallu Hbabna Tallu” (The Beloved Ones Have Arrived), which quickly became a huge hit. The lyrics, which describe receiving beloved visitors in the beautiful setting of the Lebanese countryside, cover three themes: romance, hospitality, and patriotism.
