SCOOP 2019 ANNUAL REPORT | 1 WHO, WHY & WHERE

MISSION: No child should live in poverty or danger, wherever they are born or the circumstances they are born into. It is the great failure of mankind that innocent children are born into abject poverty or into displacement camps. At SCOOP we are on a mission to build a kinder world for the next generation and to help anyone we can, anyone who is hurting around the world through no fault of their own. ETHOS: Poverty and war are the ultimate failures of mankind, pipped only by our ability to ignore these man made catastrophes. But while the solutions to these problems are complex, the moral premise is simple: be sound - We need to help those that are in need of it. At SCOOP we do that by supporting grass root organisations working tirelessly on the frontlines who are lacking support and resources. Like us, they are the little guy fighting the odds, so we support them in any way we can, giving them the support they need to carry out their life changing work and the support to be able to grow and ultimately help more people.

A student in the school in Prey Ponror, Cambodia. SCOOP 2019 ANNUAL REPORT | 2 The SCOOP Story

SCOOP started in 2009 with a small group of like-minded friends throwing club nights, tables quizzes and small art auctions to help home and educate street children in Cambodia and India. But we have grown since to support doctors in war zones, IDP’s & refugees fleeing danger and addressing the homeless crisis here in Ireland.

We also want to provide a platform for young people in Ireland to get involved with helping change the world for the better. We also believe in raising funds in a positive manner, steering away from manipulative advertising, bucket shaking or other draconian methods.

We treat each cent we raise like our benefactors would and treat each donor with respect, as they are the backbone of our organisation and allow us to carry out the work we do.

VISION: Our vision is to create a kinder, more nurturing world for the next generation. To create educational systems that transcend borders, class or the limiting circumstances most of the planet find themselves born into. Whether it is educating impoverished children or supporting those forgotten and living indefinitely in camps or supporting mobile clinics in war zones, we want to help those who are on the front lines saving lives and those who are changing the fates of those less fortunate, whether it be from danger or unbreakable poverty cycles, for they are the real change makers and deserve all the support we can give them.

CURRENT For the last 10 years we have supported grass root At home in Ireland our StreetSmart campaign raises much OPERATIONS: organisations working in Cambodia, India, Syria, Iraq, needed funds to tackle the homeless crisis by raising Yemen, Kenya and at home in Ireland. The Cambodian, funds through restaurants, donating the funds to small to Indian and Kenyan projects focus on the welfare, education medium sized grass root projects working on the front lines. and development of impoverished children; The projects in Syria, Iraq and Yemen focus on supporting doctors, ambulances and clinics working in various locations or camps for IDP’s.

CURRENT OPERATIONS

In 2019 & 2020 the main focus of our work will be around the continued growth and development of the iT Programme, which we aim to bring to all the countries we have partner organisations in, including Ireland and for those living in Direct Provision.

Bajed Kandala Camp for displaced persons (Iraqi Kurdistan) and The SCOOP iT Programme

We have been working alongside Swedish NGO Joint Help for Kurdistan for the last 3 years, supporting a wide range of medical and humanitarian projects in and around Bajed Kandala camp in Iraqi Kurdistan. In 2017 we started the Psychological Support Programme, aimed at helping women and children who have returned from ISIS captivity.

SCOOP Art & IT Programmes

This led to the creation of the Art Programme in 2018, which was a progression from the Psychological Support Programme, but largely aimed to help children and young people express themselves and beat the boredom of life in the camp.

On Shane Sutton’s 2nd trip to the camp he spoke to his students and it was identified that they wanted to learn IT and computer skills. Further research found that the education curriculums available in the camp, particularly the curriculum provided by the Baghdad government was heavily flawed, offering students three hours of schooling a day largely delivered by unqualified volunteers.

Calvin and Shane travelled out again in November 2019. With Two boys with their finished work. support from Coder-Dojo and Dropbox, they shipped ten Mac Book Pros to the camp and built an IT centre/classroom. Pilot classes were delivered in coding, graphic design and general computing. Online computing classes were delivered by volunteers in Google HQ in Dublin and online academic physics classes were delivered by a teacher in Erbil, Iraq.

Further partnerships were forged in Ireland with St Patrick’s DCU, Ableton, UCDVO and NextRoll to fully launch the programme in January 2020.

CAIRDE KHMER GAA CLUB PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA

In 2018 & 2019 we sponsored the budding new GAA club in Phnom Penh, set up by long term SCOOP collaborator - photographer Conor Wall, originally from Cork but who has made Cambodia his new home the last 12 years or so. Fellow Corkonian Peter Downey is also a co- founder and he was in fact the 3rd ever long term volunteer we sent abroad, and he too fell in love with the country and has made it his home.

Both being very talented soccer players, and proud gaelic players, they set about setting up the country’s first GAA Club in 2017, with SCOOP sponsoring them since 2018.

The Club not only promotes gaelic games, but it also offers free training to Cambodians interested, and when the gang went to Kuala Lumpur in November for the Asian Gaelic Games, there were Cambodians in the squad who had never left their home country in their lives - the Cairde Khmer gang helping them get their passports also.

And that’s not all the good news from Kuala Lumpur - they walked away with a ton of silverware as one of their teams won the Men’s Junior Cairde Khmer after winning the Pan-Asian Gaelic Games in Malaysia. Football Championship and the whole club won Club of the Year. To top it all off they also brought home 1 Men’s All Star Award, 1 Men’s Fair Play Award, 2 Ladies Junior Plate Medals and 1 Senior Hurling Medal. They also fielded the first all Khmer team who played an exhibition match against Malaysia’s Orang Eire team.

We are honoured to back such a positive and community nurturing club. Cambodia Abú!

10TH ANNIVERSARY ART AUCTION

Back in 2009 we ran our first major event, which was a live art auction of 90 artworks, largely from street artists or fine art artists who were known to any of the 4-5 team members. One of our founding board members - George Gerard Mealy stepped in to be our auctioneer. He remains on the board and as our resident auctioneer to this day.

10 years later, we ran a very special art auction, not only because it smashed the €50k mark for the first, but because the event was dedicated to the life and memory of Andy & Calvin’s Mum Gaye, who was the inspiration for setting up SCOOP in the first place. Gaye was the heart and soul at the first auction in 2009, and she would have been mega proud to see how far we had become in terms of events / auction abilities, but also as an organisation.

The exhibition was held in the beautiful Copperhouse Gallery off Synge St in Dublin, and the auction itself was held in the Gatsby inspired function room in The Iveagh Garden Hotel on Harcourt St, only a few doors up from the old Harcourt St Children’s Hospital where Gaye trained to be a nurse when she first moved to Dublin as a 17 year old in 1968. Andy & Calvin with Duda’s Artwork. Highlights included incredible artworks from Shane Sutton, Duda, Leah Hewson, Francis Matthews, Kate Beagan, Conor Bereen, Jim Fitzpatrick, Margo Banks, Juliana Scodeler plus 5 signed books from Eamon Doyle.
