HKA Guide to H-E-B Meyerland HKA Guide to H-E-B Meyerland HEB Meyerland Overview: HEB Meyerland has seven kosher production areas certified by HKA and is supervised by three full-time Mashgichim. Please note: All kosher production areas are certified by MKT as well except the coffee shop which is Chalav Stam and only certified by HKA. Prepackaged kosher products offered for sale are NOT certified by HKA and should be individually inspected for approved kosher symbols. All kosher products produced in HEB are labeled with colored HKA kosher labels. The colored labeling system is as follows: 1. Red – Meat 2. Green – Pareve 3. Orange – Fish (Pareve) 4. Blue - Dairy Kosher Bakery Located underneath sign “Certified Kosher Bakery” Important Note: There are two completely separate bakeries located in HEB. One is kosher-pareve and the other is NOT KOSHER. Please pay close attention to the signage and ensure everything you are purchasing has a green HKA Kosher label. Kosher bakery produces breads, bagels, tortillas, bolillo rolls and some cakes. Custom cakes ordered from the kosher bakery are kosher-pareve as well. Open display products must have green HKA kosher label on display price tag. BAKERY PRODUCTS WITHOUT A GREEN HKA KOSHER LABEL ARE NOT KOSHER! Version Two – 2/2/20 Page 1 of 4 Prepackaged kosher products offered for sale are NOT certified by HKA and should be individually inspected for approved kosher symbols. Roastery (Coffee Shop) Coffee Shop - All beverages and sandwiches produced in the coffee shop are kosher-dairy and assumed to be Chalav Stam. Meat and Pareve sandwiches are produced in a different production area. Chalav Yisrael milk and whipped cream may be available upon request – ask for “Jewish Milk”. Egg and tuna prepackaged sandwiches – Kosher-pareve when displaying HKA green label. Cheese and cream cheese sandwiches – kosher-dairy when prepacked and displaying blue kosher label or when custom-made in coffee shop. Deli prepackaged sandwiches – Kosher-meat when displaying red HKA label and additional kosher label on underside of package signed by the mashgiach. Currently, bread sandwiches are Pas Yisroel; Wraps and pita chips in snack trays are NOT Pas Yisroel. Packaged coffee beans and grinds – Kosher-pareve when displaying HKA logo on package. Produce Guacamole – Kosher-pareve when displaying HKA green label. Fruit and Vegetable Juices – Kosher-pareve when displaying HKA green label. Kosher Meat and Poultry Displayed across from the non-kosher seafood counter. Meat and Poultry – Kosher-meat when displaying red HKA label and additional kosher label on underside of package signed by the mashgiach. Shechita certification/company is initialed on underside of package (e.g. SH = Shor Habor). Version Two – 2/2/20 Page 2 of 4 Kosher Dairy Displayed directly behind meat display area. Dairy products are NOT certified by HKA and should be individually inspected for approved kosher symbols and/or Chalav Yisroel status. Sushi/Seafood Displayed in endcap of kosher meat and dairy refrigerator. Kosher sushi and seafood are produced in a dedicated kosher area and are exclusively available in dedicated kosher displays. Sushi and seafood counters are NOT kosher-certified. Seafood - Kosher-pareve when displaying HKA green label and signed by mashgiach. Sushi - Kosher-pareve when displaying HKA green label. Even “raw and unfiltered” honey is usually strained, to remove the bee parts. However, some completely unprocessed honeys are neither filtered nor strained. If the label or the manufacturer states that the honey is not strained, or if bee parts are visible, that honey should be avoided or should be strained by the consumer. • Please be aware that “ Forest honey”, “ Honeydew honey”, and “ Beechwood honey” (or honey named after other types of trees such as Pine, Fir, Oak, etc.), generally refer to honey produced by bees that have consumed the non-Kosher excretions of aphids and scale insects left on trees (as opposed to standard honey produced from flower nectar). These are not considered Kosher according to some opinions, and should be avoided. • “Royal Jelly” is a bee product that, unlike regular honey, is an actual secretion of the bee. Some Poskim therefore rule that it is not included in the permitted category of “honey”, and it should be avoided. FISH HEADS: [From New Square Kashrus Council] • White fish: White fish heads are free of infestation concern. • Salmon/Baby salmon: Salmon heads [even farm raised] are commonly infested with salmon lice (small brownish parasites ranging in size from approximately 1-3 cm). · The entire gills must be removed. (It may be easier to first cut the head in half before cleaning). · Rinse the head thoroughly with water while rubbing all surfaces of the head (inside and outside), including all cracks, crevices and folds, and under and around the tongue.

Refer to של הלכה Darchei Teshuva Y.D. 112:1 who says Chazal were more stringent by pas akum etc so one should not learn to other (.ברכות ח) .issurei d’rabbanan ...בלבד (.ברכות ח) Pas Akum, Pas Paltur, and Pas Yisroel (Part 1) | 1 enacted a gezeira that the bread of a non-Jew is forbidden for a Jew to eat.2 This is known as pas akum.3 This issur applies even in a situation where assimilation is not a concern.4 This issur applies to men, women, and children.5 Non-Jew / Non-Frum Jew The consensus of the poskim is that the bread of a non-Jew who does not bow down to avodah zarah is also included in this issur.6According to some poskim the bread of a non-frum Jew is also included in the above issur and one is forbidden to eat it.7 Which Items are Included? Only bread made from the five grains (wheat, barley, spelt, oats and rye) is prohibited since these are chashuv8 and will bring one to come close to non-Jews.9 Rice bread and corn bread are excluded from the gezeira.10 In addition, any other grains which are not part of the five grains mentioned above are also excluded from the gezeira.11 If an item which is not included in the gezeira is mixed with an item which is included one should follow the rov (majority) of the ingredients.12 2.

    ‘Chinuch’= Religious Education of Jewish Children and Youngsters Prof. Rabbi Ahron Daum teaches his youngest daughter Hadassah Yemima to kindle the Chanukah-lights during a family vacation to Israel, 1997 1 ‘Chinuch’ =Jewish Religious Education of Children Including: Preparation Program for ‘Giyur’ of Children: Age 3 – 18 1. ‘Chinuch’ definition: The Festival of Chanukah probably introduced the word “Chinuch” to Judaism. This means to introduce the child to Judaism and to dedicate and inaugurate him in the practice of ‘Mitzvot’. The parents, both mother and father, are the most important persons in the Jewish religious education of the child. The duty of religious education already starts during the period of pregnancy. Then the child is shaped and we should influence this process by not speaking ugly words, shouting, listening to bad music etc, but shaping it in a quiet, peaceful and harmonious atmosphere. After being born, the child already starts its first steps with “kashrut” by being fed with mother’s milk or with kosher baby formula. 2 The Midrash states that when the Jewish people stood at Mount Sinai to receive the Torah, they were asked by G-d for a guarantee that they would indeed observe the Torah in the future. The only security which God was willing to accept, concludes the Midrash, was the children of the Jewish people. This highlights the overwhelming significance of ‘Chinuch’. The duty to train children in ‘Mitzvah’-observance is rabbinic in nature. Parents are rabbinic ally obligated to make sure that their children observe the Torah, so that they will be accustomed to doing this when they reach the age of adulthood.

    Kosher Connections Dairy Bread During the me of the Beis HaMikdash, there was a unique korban offered on Shavuos which contained two loaves of bread and was known as the shtei halechem (two breads), and to commemorate this a custom developed to eat dairy and meat at the same meal (Rema OC 494:2). How does that custom remind us of the shtei halechem? The answer is that a loaf of bread which was used at a dairy meal should not be used at a meat meal (or vice versa) because of a concern that there might be some residue of dairy on the bread (see Rema YD 88:2). Therefore, by serving dairy and then meat at one meal, the parcipants will be required to have two sepa- rate loaves of bread, and those two loaves are a reminder of the two loaves of bread offered in the Beis HaMikdash. Our discussion will focus on the following related halacha which applies year round. Because bread is a staple food which is made of simple, pareve ingredients and was commonly eaten with every meal. Chazal were similarly concerned that if bread was made with animal fat or with milk people would mistakenly eat it with the “other” type; there- fore, they forbade one from making bread which is fleishig or milchig, and also said that such bread may not be eaten at all.1 A few years ago, the cRc was asked to cerfy a large commercial bakery and found that just about every product they made contained milk powder which meant that none of the products could be cerfied.

Every action must accord with Torah principles. Torah law dictates which shoe one should put on first.1 There are also various laws relating to the bathroom.2 The Torah also teaches not only that one must pray three times a day, but also that the three prayers must each be recited during their respective specific time periods, as laid out by Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.3 With this in mind, it should come as no surprise that the Torah regulates what a Jew may eat and drink. Upon completing one of its renditions of the Jewish dietary laws, the Torah states that Jews have an obligation ‘‘to distinguish,’’ or ‘‘l’havdil’’ (in the original Hebrew) ‘‘between the contaminated and the pure, and between the animal that may eaten and the animal that may not be eaten.’’4 Rashi5 explains that the obligation goes beyond merely reading through the Torah passages that discuss these laws; rather one must learn the laws until he knows them, recognizes them, and is an expert in them.6 It is with this in mind that I now begin to scratch the surface of the Jewish dietary laws.
