The declaration of war in 1939 found the Canadian Army without the establishments or organization necessary to carry out scientific research or technical development. This is readily understandable since up to this time, with a few exceptions1, Canadian commitments had not warranted any independent of warlike stores, but largely for their production as well.

POINT OF FAILURE PJ MC CARTY – UNIVERSITY OF WOLVERHAMPTON ABSTRACT By the summer of 1940 the British Army had suffered two simultaneous strategic defeats in Norway and France. Both had led to hurried and ignominious evacuations. A popular misconception contends that this led to a wholesale clearing out of the British Army’s command structure in order to start again, and that many officers suffered the loss of their careers in the necessity to rebuild an army both to withstand invasion and enable victory over Nazi Germany. This thesis contends that this belief is misplaced, and that rather than automatically ending the careers of all involved, some officers would progress and even thrive after 1940 in varying degrees.

  • Juno Beach Landing Tables
Operation Overlord/Neptune Force 'J' - Juno Beach They were Waiting - German Defences The Germans used millions of slave labourers during four years of occupation to construct the 'Atlantic Wall' - a modern fortification system along the coast of France. The fortifications consisted of a series of reinforced concrete gun emplacements supported by well protected infantry strong-points and heavy machine gun nests overlooking the beaches. These were surrounded by trenches with mortars and machine guns. The beaches were strewn with obstacles and mines. Tetrahedral obstacles - three iron bars intersecting at rights angles had been constructed on the beaches. Fields of barbed wire and mines covered the land past the beaches. Also the seafront houses provided excellent observation and firing positions for snipers. There were 32 static Infantry Divisions of widely varying quality defending these fortifications along the French and Dutch coast. This first line of defence was backed up by Panzer Divisions (Armoured and Motorized Divisions) positioned inland from the Atlantic wall. The strategy was, if the Atlantic wall were breached, theses elite formations of crack mobile troops would strike as soon as possible after the landing and throw the Canadians and the Allies back into the sea. Within striking distance of the coast were five first-class divisions: the 21st Panzer Division with an estimated 350 tanks, the 12th SS Division with 150 tanks, the Panzer Lehr Division in the Le Mans area and two more tank divisions in the Seine. The proximity of 12th SS and 21st Panzer Divisions made it difficult for the British and Canadians to capture their objectives of Caen on D-Day.

  • Channel Islands Liberation Date of Issue: 10 MAY 1948
SPECIAL STAMP HISTORY Channel Islands liberation Date of issue: 10 MAY 1948 The Channel Islands were liberated from German occupation on 9 May 1945. In March the following year an Inter-Island Conference was held on Jersey: one of the topics discussed appears to have been how publicity might be generated to help revive the tourist trade. Subsequently the Lieutenant Governor of Jersey wrote to the Home Office suggesting that Jersey and Guernsey each be allowed to have its own distinctive postage stamps, or failing that a slogan postmark. This request was forwarded to the GPO by T Hutson of the Home Office on 8 April 1946. C O L Leigh-Clare of the Postal Services Department replied on 26 April, detailing the GPO's policy of issuing a single range of definitives for the territory under its administration, and special stamps to celebrate occasions of national importance or international postal significance. This was the standard response. A similar request had come from the Minister of Commerce for Northern Ireland in 1937. Another factor was the perceived indignity of associating stamps with commercial advertising. The Department of Overseas Trade had made very similar overtures on behalf of the Travel Association of Great Britain and Ireland, asking for pictorial stamps as a spur to tourism, and been refused. On 31 May, however, the Home Secretary, Mr Chuter-Ede, wrote to the Earl of Listowel, the Postmaster General (PMG). He had visited the Channel Islands and received representations that he was inclined to favour. Discussions took place involving the GPO, both internally and in negotiation with the Home Office, for nearly a year.
