Barthé, Jr. (Doctorate of Philosophy in History) Becoming American in Creole New Orleans: Family, Community, Labor and Schooling, 1896-1949 Summary: The Louisiana Creole community in New Orleans went through profound changes in the first half of the 20th-century. This work examines Creole ethnic identity, focusing particularly on the transition from Creole to American. In "becoming American," Creoles adapted to a binary, racialized caste system prevalent in the Jim Crow American South (and transformed from a primarily Francophone/Creolophone community (where a tripartite although permissive caste system long existed) to a primarily Anglophone community (marked by stricter black-white binaries). These adaptations and transformations were facilitated through Creole participation in fraternal societies, the organized labor movement and public and parochial schools that provided English-only instruction.

  • Paris, New York, and Post-National Romance
Sex and the Series: Paris, New York, and Post-National Romance Dana Heller / love Paris every moment, Every moment of the year I love Paris, why oh why do I love Paris? Because my love is here. —Cole Porter, / Love Paris This essay will examine and contrast two recent popular situation comedies, NBC's Friends and HBO's Sex and the City, as narratives that participate in the long-standing utilization of Paris as trope, or as an instrumental figure within the perennially deformed and reformed landscape of the American national imaginary. My argument is that Paris re-emerges in post-9/11 popular culture as a complex, multi-accentual figure within the imagined mise-en-scene of the world Americans desire. The reasons for this are to a large degree historical: in literature, cinema, television, popular music, and other forms of U.S. cultural production, from the late nineteenth century through the twentieth century and into the twenty first, Paris has remained that city where one ventures, literally and/or imaginatively, to dismember history, or to perform a disarticulation of the national subject that suggests possibilities for the interrogation of national myths and for 0026-3079/2005/4602-145$2.50/0 American Studies, 46:1 (Summer 2005): 145-169 145 146 Dana Heller the articulation of possible new forms of national unity and allegiance. These forms frequently find expression in the romantic transformation of a national citizen-subject into a citizen-subject of the world, a critique of the imperialist aspirations of the nation-state that antithetically masks those same aspirations under the sign of the disillusioned American cosmopolitan abroad.

  • The Divorce of Americans in France
THE DIVORCE OF AMERICANS IN FRANCE LINDYLL T. BATEs* The first French law authorizing divorce a vinculo matrimonii by judgment was enacted in 1792, the very day of the fall of the Bourbon Monarchy. Prior thereto, separation a mensa et thoro alone was countenanced by the strongly clerical King- dom. The rush to divorce under the new liberty was such that in the Year VI of the Republic the number of divorces exceeded that of marriages. The Code Napollon of. x8o3 established divorce for cause and even by mutual consent; though Napoleon's own divorce fron Josephine is the only known instance of the use of a. consent method under the Code. Divorce was abolished in x86 at the reestablishment of the Kingdom, and separation only could be had in France from that time until the Third Republic. The articles of the Civil Coda for divorce based upon cause were reEnacted by Law of July 27, 1884, the articles for divorce by mutual consent remain- ing abolished. With some amendments, this is the law that now governs the insti- tution. Today, divorce.is again frequent in France; separations are but a quarter as numerous. In i885, 4,277 divorces were recorded; in 1913 the figure had risen to 15,372; in 1921, to 2,o33. Now the figure exceeds 30,0o0. The ratio of divorce to population was 70 per hundred thousand in x92; in America it was then x35. About 85 per cent of the divorce petitions are granted. The wife is plaintiff in 65 per cent of the divorce suits.

A teacher’s guide to DAVID C ULLOUGH M C WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction 1 About the Author 1 Resources 1 Key Figures 2 Pre-Reading Knowledge 5 Part I, Chapter 1 6 Part I, Chapter 2 8 Part I, Chapter 3 11 Part II, Chapter 4 14 Part II, Chapter 5 17 Part III, Chapter 6 19 Part III, Chapter 7 22 INTRODUCTION Although the passage of the Declaration of Independence is a universally taught event in the United States, most high school students’ knowledge tends to be confined to the events that occurred in the city of Philadelphia during the month of July. In focusing on the events throughout the year of 1776, Pulitzer Prize–winning historian David McCullough gives students a deep understanding, from both sides of the conflict, of the events, people, and decisions that led to the creation of the United States. McCullough’s extensively researched work is filled with primary sources, reinforcing details and differing points of view on the events presented within the text, all of which makes 1776 an excellent text for use with the Common Core standards. This teacher’s guide provides a brief summary of 1776, divided by chapter and then subdivided by section. Each section summary includes a list of Key Features. Also provided for each chapter are the following supplementary teaching aids to spur discussion and challenge the student’s knowledge of the material: Key Terms and Vocabulary, Questions, Primary and Alternate Source Analysis, Activities and Projects, and for some chapters, an Interdisciplinary Activity.
