OurStory: Life in a WWII Japanese American Internment Camp Connecting Food and Stories Parent Guide, page 1 of 2 Read the “Directions” sheets for step-by-step instructions. SUMMARY In this activity, children and adults will read or listen to a short news story about the food in a Japanese American internment camp, then create their own meals using some of the same ingredients. WHY Connecting a familiar food to a historical event will help bring to life one part of the day- to-day experience in the internment camps. The experience of eating food prepared from a camp recipe helps children think about how food traditions are connected to stories. TIME n 40-90 minutes, depending on recipe and discussion RECOMMENDED AGE GROUP This activity will work best for children in kindergarten through fourth grade. It was the key to distributing the Grande postcards on the street and in schools. Volunteers, mostly high-school-aged kids, would get a stack of cards to pass out, plus a free pass to the Grande for themselves. Russ Gibb, who ran the Grande Ballroom, says that this was the ticket, so to speak, to bring in the crowds. While posters in Detroit did not have the effect that posters in San Francisco had, and handbills were only somewhat better, the cards turned out to actually work best. These cards are quite rare. Born in New York City in 1940, David grew up in a Jewish family in Brooklyn. David recounts how an interest in Native American cultures originally brought him to the drums and tells the story of how he acquired his first drum kit at the age of 15. David explains that as an adolescent he aspired to be an artist and consequently attended Cooper Union after graduating from high school. David recounts his decision to leave New York in 1960 and drive out to California, where he immediately enrolled at the San Francisco Art Institute and soon after started playing music with fellow artists. David explains how he became the drummer for Big Brother and the Holding Company in 1966 and reminisces about the legendary Monterey Pop Festival they performed at the following year. He shares numerous stories about Janis Joplin and speaks movingly about his grief upon hearing the news of her death. David discusses the various bands he played in after the dissolution of Big Brother and the Holding Company, as well as the many places he performed over the years in Marin County. He concludes his oral history with a discussion of his family: his daughters Alarza and Liz, both of whom are singer- songwriters, and his wife Joan Payne, an actress and singer. -

An excellent book Detroit classic rockBy Georgia glassI have been reading books on classic rock for almost 20 years now and I found this book just excellent. It has a brief, but interesting introduction to the history of the Grande before it starts discussing it's classic rock roots. The chapters are formatted into brief stories in chronological order that were well written and included quotes from people who were there and pictures interspersed. The formatting of the chapters into these mini stories made the book very easy to read and I did not even use a bookmark. The writing itself is well done and kept my interest the whole week I quickly devoured this book. Overall, I learned a lot I didn't know (how unfortunate about the historical nomination that didn't happen) and would definitely recommend for anyone interested in classic rock, Detroit history or any mix of the two.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. -

Food spaces in the Philippines incorporate a wide range of venues and activities that increasingly transcend social class and public/domestic contexts as the photos in this essay showcase in profound and subtle ways. The pictures contained herein reveal as much about globalization’s multiscalar impact as they do Filipinos’ longstanding ability to adapt and assimilate externalities into more traditional modes of dietary practice.
