Morris III Thesis Adviser: Rebecca Boylan, Ph.D. ABSTRACT U.S. Navy SEALs have become ubiquitous in the years since SEAL Team Six killed Osama Bin Laden during Operation Neptune Spear in 2011. SEAL narratives and stories can be found in bookstores, movie theaters, newspapers, talk shows, board rooms, and campaign trails. But who are Navy SEALs? Though existing scholarly literature explores the factual elements of SEALs, the archetypal identity of Navy SEALs remains a mystery. By some popular accounts, SEALs are American superheroes or living legends who bridge the gap between myth and reality. This thesis finds and explores the intricacies of the SEAL identity by reading SEAL narratives and stories, particularly American Sniper (the film), American Sniper (the book), Fearless, The Operator, and Lone Survivor.1 This thesis argues that a Hegelian dialectic between the ordinary and the extraordinary characterizes the Navy SEAL identity which emerges from the intersection of the narratives and stories produced by SEALs, specifically those who waged the War on Terror between 2001 and 2011.

More specifically, as this article contends, secrecy can be understood as a nested set of practices, a composition that obscures and makes illegible as a central part of the act of power. This composition of secrecy practices is collectively referred to as an arcanum and composed of four different layers: geographies of secrecy; specialist mediations of secrecy; cultures of secrecy, and pleasures of secrecy with attendant implications for the construction of subjects within a discourse. In particular, using the U.S. ‘shadow war’ as an empirical case study, and in particular conducting a close reading of a set of key memoirs associated with the rising practice of ‘manhunting’ in the Global War on Terrorism, the legitimizing and meaning-making practices of secrecy are explored. I was born in 1950, October of ’50, in a place called Bryan,Texas . Most people know it as College Station. The only reason I was born there is because as my father pointed out to me, while working in the oil fields of South Texas I had been conceived in Reno, carried in Kingsville, and as they were driving through Bryan they stopped and delivered me. We continued to move all across the south between Freer, McGowan, Alice, Reynoso, Matamoras, San Antonio, Burleson, Ft. Worth then we moved into Kansas. Up to Hays, Great Bend, Salada up to Utah to Salt Lake and Beryl and finally in 1961 we moved to Illinois. I resided in Illinois with my folks there until I got into college at Southern Illinois University. I spent one misfit year there and got wrapped up in the anti-war movement in 1969 and was asked never to come back to Southern Illinois. They didn’t want me or my money. Go somewhere else. My father, being a World War II veteran, he didn’t take kindly to the fact that I had rioted against the war so he cut off, severed the financial umbilical cord and I became a nomad so to speak. He said, “You can live in our house until the end of the summer, get what money you can, and then when school starts we don’t really care where you go but go.” LYN-That was during draft time also.
