  • General Synod Report for Diocesan Synod Introduction
General Synod Report for Diocesan Synod Introduction - Lucy Our February group of sessions took place between the 13th – 16th Feb down at Church House in London. Nick (Land) and I both made our maiden speeches successfully without being given the dreaded bell and Linda continued to perfect her chairing skills and even successfully pulled off some humour! No mean feat while sat in the chair! You’ll know from news coverage there was a certain hotly anticipated debate scheduled for the Wednesday but Linda and I will attempt to give you a BBC style, non-biased report of the main events over the course of the week. Anniversary of the Reformation – Linda The Faith and Order Commission of the Church of England with support of the Council of Christian Unity presented this motion in the context of the 500th Anniversary of the beginning of the European Reformation and the Church of England’s understanding of the doctrine of justification as expressed in our historic formularies. Archbishop of Canterbury Presidential Address – Linda He stated that we are a cross-shaped people and the time has come to re-imagine our future in light of all the uncertainty of our time. The future offers many opportunities to which we should rise when we find in the country a skills gap, failing NHS and Social Care, and high greenhouse gas emission. The Church could be part of the answer, as we have a deep strong reach into the community recognising as a Church we are also guilty of abuse and we must not resist addressing these appalling matters.

  • Calendar of Intercessions Michaelmas – Advent 2017
Calendar of Intercessions Michaelmas – Advent 2017 to this edition of the prayer diary, following the Feast St Michael and All Angels until the first Sunday of Advent. There are now two Rochester cycles of prayer – ‘parishes’ and ‘extra- Welcome parochial’. This is an attempt to be a little more even handed with the additional groups who are prayed for as the year turns, and to include our church schools in our prayers. As usual, it’s a sizable document but designed to be quick and clear to read, and also to leave space for your own notes. Of course, you do not have to print it all out at once, and you’re welcome to reformat it, if you wish (a Word version is available from my blog, see website below). Sunday entries are designed to look at some of the bigger pictures in our Diocese – sometimes geographical (deaneries, archdeaconries, link dioceses) sometimes issues or activities (Vocations Sunday). If there is an aspect of diocesan life that you’d like included on a Sunday, do let me know. These are followed through the week by daily prayers from all over the diocese, and across the Anglican Communion, including the calendar of saints and other worthy people. Finally, there is space in the daily entries for you to note any prayer requests that have been made to you or your parish, or any special interests you want to remember in your prayers. Please contact me with any comments or suggestions – [email protected] or 01634 814439. I will also be pleased to provide large print copies to any who would find that helpful.

All that we know about him is that he was a prince of David's line who, in response to the decree of Cyrus, " went up " as leader of those who returned from captivity in Babylon; and, in spite of many discouragements, carried through the rebuilding of God's temple in Jerusalem; an ordinary man, pro- bably, who succeeded where a genius might have failed; who rose to the demand made upon his patriotism by the circumstances of his time; who was great only because he did not shirk an unattractive duty; one who did not make history, but brought an epoch to the birth; felix opportunitate nativitatis ejus.

  • The Death and Funeral of Edward Carson
The death and funeral of Edward Carson Edward Carson had contracted bronchial pneumonia in June 1935 but by July he was out of danger. During this period Dr Charles D’Arcy, the Church of Ireland Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland, paid a visit to see his fellow Dubliner. Carson confided to the Primate, ‘I have seen much to shake my faith and what remains with me is no more than I learned at my mother’s knee: “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son …”’. The Archbishop assured Ned, his old friend, that John 3:16 was ‘enough’. While Carson recovered, his health was nevertheless fatally weakened. By the early autumn his strength began to ebb away and at 8:00 on the morning of 22 October 1935 at Cleve Court, a Queen Anne house in the Isle of Thanet, Kent, Carson died. Carson had left no instructions in his will as to where he wished to be buried but in conversation with Lord Craigavon (as Sir James Craig had become in 1927) he had expressed a desire to be buried in the land, in Craigavon’s words, for which ‘he fought so long, so valiantly and so successfully’. In a broadcast the Prime Minister announced that the Northern Ireland Government would provide a state funeral and that Carson would be buried St Anne’s Cathedral. Craigavon introduced special legislation in the Northern Ireland House of Commons to enable the burial to take place in the Cathedral. The legislation passed through all its stages there and in the Senate in one sitting.

The Licensing of The Reverend John Michael Blakeley by the Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham The Right Reverend Paul Williams and the Installation by the Archdeacon of Nottingham The Venerable Phil Williams in the presence of The Bishop of Beverley The Right Reverend Glyn Webster Photo credit Jordan Dawson as Priest-in-Charge of St Stephen’s with St Matthias, Sneinton th on Tuesday 15 June 2021 at 7.30pm About this service This is a special service of celebration that marks the beginning of a new phase of ministry both for John and for the people of this community. Although a more limited gathering, necessitated by the requirement to be Covid-19 safe, this service gives the community an opportunity to welcome the priest to their new role, and allows both priest and people to commit themselves to the ministry ahead, praying for God’s leading in it. We are immensely grateful to many who, whilst not able to form part of this evening’s formal welcome, are upholding John and the parish in prayer at this time. The ministry to which John is being appointed is to the local parish and the wider community. The role of the Anglican parish priest is to care for the whole community and to nurture the faithful. They work with all those in the local community, whether they are people of faith or not. Therefore, within this service, the welcome is made by both church and representatives of the wider community. In this service, John is presented to the Bishop and then presented to the community by the Bishop.

THE BOOK OF ARMAGH BY THE REV. CANON W.E.C. FLEMING, M.A. SOMETIME INCUMBENT OF TARTARAGHAN AND DIAMOND AND CHANCELLOR OF ARMAGH CATHEDRAL 2013 The eighth and ninth centuries A.D. were an unsettled period in Irish history, the situation being exacerbated by the arrival of the Vikings1 on these shores in 795, only to return again in increasing numbers to plunder and wreak havoc upon many of the church settlements, carrying off and destroying their treasured possessions. Prior to these incursions the country had been subject to a long series of disputes and battles, involving local kings and chieftains, as a result of which they were weakened and unable to present a united front against the foreigners. According to The Annals of the Four Masters2, under the year 800 we find, “Ard-Macha was plundered thrice in one month by the foreigners, and it had never been plundered by strangers before.” Further raids took place on at least seven occasions, and in 941 they record, “Ard-Macha was plundered by the same foreigners ...” It is, therefore, rather surprising that in spite of so much disruption in various parts of the country, there remained for many people a degree of normality and resilience in daily life, which enabled 1 The Vikings, also referred to as Norsemen or Danes, were Scandinavian seafarers who travelled overseas in their distinctive longships, earning for themselves the reputation of being fierce warriors. In Ireland their main targets were the rich monasteries, to which they returned and plundered again and again, carrying off church treasures and other items of value.

Welcome to the Diocese of York The Diocese of York is a family of 607 churches and 127 schools in 470 parishes, stretching from the Humber to the Tees and the A1 to the coast. We hope this pack will give you a good idea of what it might be like to live and work in the Diocese of York. Contents: Vision and mission Living in the Diocese Housing and money Ministry together Lifelong learning Spiritual sustenance York Minster Central support Young people Who’s who “We will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.” Ephesians 4:14 & 15 Vision and mission We have a vision of Generous Churches Making and Nurturing Disciples. “We will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.” Ephesians 4:14 & 15 As a Diocese, we want to see our churches making disciples of all ages. We want to see mutual resourcing to build up the Body of Christ, to grow in five areas: • Christ-likeness Becoming like Christ is the fundamental call of Christian discipleship. It is not always easy to assess, but we often recognise the flavour of a life becoming more godly. • Commitment Commitment itself has several features, including: commitment to God, to seeking God’s kingdom, to Christ’s body the Church. • Partnership Working with other churches, locally and globally, with schools, community groups, people, organisations for the common good, peace, justice and a healthy environment.
