VI/XX and dated 1985 27 3/4 x 74 inches 70.5 x 187.9 centimeters Provenance: Private Collection, Vancouver Exhibited: Literature: In 1984, while travelling from Mexico City to Oaxaca, David Hockney unexpectedly found himself at the Hotel Roman Angeles in Acatlan, Mexico as a result of his car breaking down. He was inspired from the lush gardens and an architecturally designed terrace, the result being a series of six bold and brightly coloured works. Upon Hockney’s return to his home in Los Angeles shortly thereafter, he again worked with Kenneth Tyler to create the sought after prints. This work is included in the Moving Focus series in which Hockney produced throughout the mid 1980’s. This print is in an edition of 98 and 20 Artist Proofs (AP). This work is on two sheets of HMP handmade paper, each measuring 27 3/4 x 36 3/4. With the blindstamp of the publisher, Tyler Graphics, Ltd. The project was undertaken by the artist as a favor to friend Michael Ovits during the latter's tenure as president of the Walt Disney Company, in exchange for donations made to Disney to the Association to Benefit Children, New York; Hale House for Children, New York; and the New York Foundling Hospital. This work is unique as it is editioned B.A.T. or "Bon a Tirer". When an artist is satisfied with the graphic from the finished plate, he works with his printer to pull one perfect graphic and it is marked "Bon a Tirer," meaning "good to pull." The printer then compares each graphic in the edition with the BAT before submitting the graphic to the artist for approval and signature.
