Sinkhole ' 84 featured 12 teams in the men ' s divi sion and 3 women ' s teams. Both Gainesville teams made a clean sweep by winning in both divi sions. Other teams traveled from Atlanta , Oak Ridge , Tenn ., and Huntsville , Ala. to play. Finals , which were played under the lights , featured some great defensive plays by Gainesville and their opponents, Gang of Disc. Final score 18 to 9. In semi-final action Miami edged by USF , 17-15 , while the wild card UCF lost to Gang of Disc. Another aspect of the Sinkhole is its pools ide party and BBQ . The honorably discharged William St. John and his roommate Jay "this must be the place" Boland provided a sumptuous spread that everyone hungrily and quickly devoured. Protein loading as it's called in some circles. This third Sinkhole brought home the idea that all Florida teams are becoming stronger and much more competitive . Sectionals , scheduled for Oct. 13th and 14th in Gainesville , are certain to feature some very fine play if Sinkhole '84 is any indication. P.S. Rick 'Sky Chop " Mellin the originator , founder, and coordinator of Sinkhole is recovering slowly at the home from the event. ....______THERE GOES By :THE Terry HamlinNEIGHBORHOOD ______--,

\'hat is Ultimate coming to now? A bunch of Fat Women from Gainesville (that ' s right - Hog Town) just won their second consecutive Sinkhole City Classic in Winter Park over Labor Day weekend. The Fat Women is the name of Gainesville ' s men ' s team in case you ' re confused. Fat was definitely where it WaS at in this Jrd annual tourney as Gainesville rolled their way through the finals against Gang of Disc from New Orleans, the same team they defeated in last years Sinkhole Classic. The championship match was played under the lights in Winter Park ' s Showalter Stadium and offered one of the better views of Ulti~ate in recent memory . Highlighted'by wide open aerial attacks by both teams , the match boasted many fully-extended horizontal grabs in the end zone. In the end Gainesville ' s team of 20 plus overpowered G.O.D. ' s squad of 14, winning handily 18 to 9. The Classic turned out 12 men's and J women ' s teams from throughout the southern region. The two days of competition was victimized by the over bearing heat and humidity which has become assoiated with this late summer tourney . Despite conditions , strong showings were made by Miami , Atlanta , Tampa and the host Aliens from Orlando. The Dogs of War from UCF battled back from the losers bracket to play G.O. D. in the semi finals as a wild card . Gainesville's women's team , The Flying Nuns , took 1st place in women ' s competition with impressively solid offensive and defensive play. t++... + ...... + .. Ultimate Update

With the Sectionals coming up October 13 & 14, Florida' s Ultimate teams are busy tuning up for the competition. Out of 10 teams only 4 or 5 will qualify and advance to the Regionals. The R.F. ' s 3 picks are Gainesville, Miami, and Tampa . The real question is who will go to the Nationals?

Disc Golf

The disappointment of the year has been the absence of Jeff Watson. Has he gone into semi-retirement? Last years World & State golf champion failed to compete in this years events . We ' ve been told that he is up to his frisbee elbow in T-shirts, and has been recovering from an Ultimate injury. Will he come back in ' 85?

The Univers ity of Central Florida has set up a 18 hole obj ect course on campus with plans to install pole holes in the future .

Devastating tropical stor m Diana could not deter 53 dedicated disc golfers who arrived from allover the southeast this past weekend to compete in the '84 Florida State Invita tional Disc Golf Championships in Rockledge. Saturday ' s heavy rains (torrential at times) and flooded condi- tions seemed to adversely affect some players mor e than others producing unexpected results with John David and Walter Reynolds failing to make the cut in the heavily talented Men ' s pro division. The day' s play was highlighted by leader Gr egg Hosfeld of Orlando ' s 46 and the first ace ever , on the 273 foot par 4 ninth hole by Sarasota's Tim Willis , both in the 2nd r ound . Sunday ' s lack of rain allowed Steve Slasor of Palm Bay to mount a charge at the leaders, but Gregg held on to win . Tom Krajna of Sarasota had 3 rounds in the 40 ' s which wer e good for 2nd . Roxanne Spencer of Melbourne tied Tami Pellecane ' s 4-round course r ecord of 238 to take the women ' s pro , and Orlando newcomer Nancy Nance led the women 's amateurs . The men 's amateur divisio. was hot and after 4 rounds a sudden-life play-off was required to break a 3-way tie for 1st. North Miami ' s Larry Br adshaw, on the occasior. of his 24th birthday gave himself a present by edg ing Hialeah ' s Bobby McCor mi ck and Maitland ' s teen- age marvel, Steve Berry II , for the Amateur title . Southern Florida' s powerful presence was accentuated by North Miami's : ...... Kevin Bogusky ' s ace on the 172 foot , par 3 , 8th hole . , i Florida's first Disc Golf". course 1Dz. 1984 .& FRISBEE. FESTIVALS

Thanks to Wham- o and festival coordinator Nick Hart , the 1984 Hacky Sack and Frisbee Festival in Miami , Fla. this past July 14th was a smash hit. Wham-o Inc., manufacturers of the Frisbee flying disc and Hacky Sack brand footbag , held over 25 of these festivals in various cities across the countr y . Florida' s event took place in Miami's beautiful Tropical Park , which attracted an estimated 1 , 000 participants . The fes tivities started about 20 minutes l ate due to a typical Florida shower , which quickly gave way to sunny skies for an enjoyable day of non-competicive festival fun . Feature demons trations included Frisbee freestyle , Frisbee gol f , canine catch & fetch , footba" freestyle , and footbag net . Scott Keating, Gregg Hosfeld , Taroi Pellicane , and Debbie Soloman gave excell ent demos of the basic throwing skills and Frisbee freestyle . Showing the game of disc golf were Tim Willis , Bob ;·'cCormick , and Debbie Notely. Donna Schoeche and her dog Cynder were superb ac canine catch & fetch . Last , but not least, Greg Cortopassi and Br uce Guettich Came all the way from Golden , Colorado to demonstrate and instruct footbag games , which they do with ease and perfection. The public was instructed by these and other volunteers too numerous to list. For their efforts , the instructors received a T- shirt and a good feeling from sharing their skills with others. Exhibicions were well received by a large cheering crowd , and everyone seemed to enjoy the show as well as the opportunity to participate in the pl ayshops. The number of Frisbees and footbags· in the air were outnumbered only by the multi tude of smiles in t he park . It was great to see young and old ali ke enjoying a wonderful day of family recr eation. Prom page 6 • : 1,)811 \lDGe •:
