Contributions to the Lichen Flora of Pennsylvania: A Checklist of Lichens Collected During the First Howard Crum Bryological Workshop, Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area RICHARD C. HARRIS1 & JAMES C. LENDEMER2 ABSTRACT. – A checklist of 209 species of lichens and lichenicolous fungi collected during the First Howard Crum Bryological Workshop in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, Pennsylvania, USA is provided. The new species Opegrapha bicolor R.C. Harris & Lendemer, collected during the Foray, is described. Chrysothrix flavovirens Tønsberg and Merismatium peregrinum (Flotow) Triebel are reported as new to North America. On April 23-26, 2004, we were graciously allowed to be commensals during the First Howard Crum Bryological Workshop in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, Pennsylvania, USA. Given the dearth of knowledge of lichen distributions in Pennsylvania and the overall lack of recent vouchers, this was a valuable opportunity to collect in what turned out to be a rich and interesting area. We were quite surprised by the apparent high lichen diversity, as well as the number of novelties and rarities, in an area so close to the East Coast megalopolis. In four half-days in the field, we collected 209 species in a limited area of the Pennsylvania part of the Park. Some are clearly new to science of which, Opegrapha bicolor is described here (see Endnote). Two presumably undescribed species of Fellhanera will be published elsewhere, and the Halecania will be included in a forthcoming treatment of Ozark lichens. Others are left for the future, as present material (and our knowledge) are inadequate. -

Proceedings of the Indiana Academy of Science 126(2):129–152 LICHENS AND ALLIED FUNGI OF THE INDIANA FOREST ALLIANCE ECOBLITZ AREA, BROWN AND MONROE COUNTIES, INDIANA INCORPORATED INTO A REVISED CHECKLIST FOR THE STATE OF INDIANA James C. Lendemer: Institute of Systematic Botany, The New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, NY 10458-5126 USA ABSTRACT. Based upon voucher collections, 108 lichen species are reported from the Indiana Forest Alliance Ecoblitz area, a 900 acre unit in Morgan-Monroe and Yellowwood State Forests, Brown and Monroe Counties, Indiana. The lichen biota of the study area was characterized as: i) dominated by species with green coccoid photobionts (80% of taxa); ii) comprised of 49% species that reproduce primarily with lichenized diaspores vs. 44% that reproduce primarily through sexual ascospores; iii) comprised of 65% crustose taxa, 29% foliose taxa, and 6% fruticose taxa; iv) one wherein many species are rare (e.g., 55% of species were collected fewer than three times) and fruticose lichens other than Cladonia were entirely absent; and v) one wherein cyanolichens were poorly represented, comprising only three species. Taxonomic diversity ranged from 21 to 56 species per site, with the lowest diversity sites concentrated in riparian corridors and the highest diversity sites on ridges. Low Gap Nature Preserve, located within the study area, was found to have comparable species richness to areas outside the nature preserve, although many species rare in the study area were found only outside preserve boundaries. Sets of rare species are delimited and discussed, as are observations as to the overall low abundance of lichens on corticolous substrates and the presence of many unhealthy foliose lichens on mature tree boles. -

Endolichenic fungi (ELF) are one of the inhabitants living in lichen thalli, and have potential ecological and industrial applications due to their various secondary metabolites. As the function of endophytic fungi on the plant ecology and ecosystem sustainability, ELF may have an influence on the lichen diversity and the ecosystem, functioning similarly to the influence of endophytic fungi on plant ecology and ecosystem sustainability, which suggests the importance of understanding the diversity and community pattern of ELF. In this study, we investigated the diversity and the factors influencing the community structure of ELF in Jeju Island, South Korea by analyzing 619 fungal isolates from 79 lichen samples in Jeju Island. A total of 112 ELF species was identified and the most common species belonged to Xylariales in Sordariomycetes. -

Lichen Checklist for North Carolina, USA
Volume 22 (2) 51 Lichen Checklist for North Carolina, USA Gary B. Perlmutter1 Abstract -- A checklist of lichens from a thorough literature review of both printed and online resources covering North Carolina, USA is presented. This list contains over 600 taxa from the state. While preparing a report for an herbaria review I had conducted for lichens of the Piedmont of North Carolina, I found it necessary to compile a checklist for the state to verify reviewed taxa as already reported or as new. The only existing checklist for North Carolina is from a website from the University of Hamburg, Germany (www.biologie.uni- hamburg.de/checklists/), which I found to be inadequate for my review. Therefore, I conducted a more thorough review of the literature, including both printed and online sources, from early papers (e.g. Oosting and Anderson 1937) to the most recent online publications (e.g. USGS 2005). The resulting checklist includes 605 lichen taxa and is the most complete listing of lichens of North Carolina to date. Notiziario della Società Lichenologica Italiana Vol. 33 - 2020 Amiche e amici lichenologi, eccovi il 33° volume del Notiziario della Società Lichenologica, un numero anomalo per tempi e modi, in un anno anomalo. Non essendosi svolto il nostro convegno annuale sapete già che non troverete in questo volume gli Atti: a inizio volume l’attualità esterna arriva in queste pagine, in due contributi narrativi scritti durante il lockdown e, purtroppo, nel ricordo dedicato a Fausto Ceni. Riprendono le interviste, con Marco Ciardi, per il piacere di dialogare con realtà al di fuori del mondo lichenologico, a seguire un excursus nell’illustrazione lichenologica, un interessante contributo sui licheni acquatici, e un punto sulle reti di biomonitoraggio. Sul finale di volume si torna alle attività dello scorso anno, con il resoconto dell’escursione e i riassunti di alcuni dei miniseminari di avvicinamento, riuniti qui nell’auspicio che interessino nuovi aspiranti lichenologi. Solo a metà mattinata i raggi del sole raggiungevano le fronde e il sottobosco. Creavano fili dorati trapassando le verdi foglie nuove della primavera. Nell’atmosfera senza brezza, la luce esaltava il volo degli insetti e i granelli di polvere e pollini. Le sagome bitorzolute degli immensi castagni, dalla corteccia nodosa e umida, creavano giochi di ombre sul terreno ricco di foglie e piante e humus. -
A Preliminary List of the Lichens of New York
Opuscula Philolichenum, 1: 55-74. 2004. A Preliminary List of the Lichens of New York RICHARD C. HARRIS1 ABSTRACT. – A list of 808 species and 7 subspecific taxa of lichens known to the author to occur in New York state is presented. The new combination Myriospora immersa (Fink ex J. Hedrick) R. C. Harris is made. The rationale for publishing this admittedly incomplete list of New York's lichens is that I am unlikely to ever have time to improve it significantly. The list has been accumulated more or less haphazardly over a period of twenty plus years. Many problems have been left unresolved. It is largely based on specimens held by The New York Botanical Garden (NY), Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BKL) and Buffalo Museum of Science (BUF), to a lesser extent Cornell University (CUP) and Farlow Herbarium, Harvard University (FH) and a few from New York State Museum (NYS) . The holdings of the New York State Museum represent a large collection not yet fully studied and will surely add significantly to knowledge of the state's lichen diversity. Surviving specimens for the earliest publication on New York lichens by Halsey (1824) are yet to be studied. Voucher information is available from the author upon request. The collections in BKL and BUF have been databased and copies can also be made available. For those interested, the history of lichenology in New York has been summarized by LaGreca (2001). Some literature records have been included if I consider them reliable, i.e., Brodo (1968) or significant, i.e., Lowe (1939). No doubt I have missed some worthy literature records in recent revisions.
