(B) DAY 3 I THU I SANTIAGO I PUNTA ARENAS I PUERTO NATALES Following a delicious breakfast this morning, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Punta Arenas. Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to the bus station where you will continue your trip from Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales. Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Enjoy the balance of the day at leisure. (B) DAY 4 I FRI I PUERTO NATALES I BALMACEDA & SERRANO GLACIERS I PUERTO NATALES After breakfast, transfer to the pier to board your ship for your full day excursion. Come navigate through the Última Esperanza fjord towards the Bernardo O’Higgins National Park. During the trip you will learn about the history of Puerto Natales and enjoy the beauty and majesty of the cascades and cliffs of the Condors. The crossing will continue towards Mount Balmaceda where you will take in the views of the glacier. Follow the route to Puerto Toro for a walk through a native forest of coigües, ñirres and ciruelillos until you approach the wall of the Serrano glacier. Upon return, you will have a typical “Magellanic barbecue” before transferring back to Magellanic Penguin your hotel later this afternoon.     By Private Chef Amalia Damgaard CHILEAN PANORAMA Although it appears slim and small, Chile is a long and narrow country about the size of Texas, with a vast coast line covering about 3,998 miles. The Pacific Ocean borders to the west; Argentina is a neighbor to the east; Bolivia, to the northeast; and Peru, to the north. Because of its geographical location, Chile has an unusual and fun landscape, with deserts, beaches, fjords, glaciers and icebergs, fertile lands, the Andes mountains, over 600 volcanoes (some active), and sub-artic conditions in the South. Since Chile is below the equator, their seasons are different from ours in the United States. So, when we have winter they have summer, and so on. Even though Chile had years of political and economic turmoil, it has evolved into a market-oriented economy with strong foreign trade. Currently, it has the strongest economy in South America, with a relatively-low crime rate, and a high standard of living. Chile is a land rich in beauty, culture, and literature. It is called “the Switzerland of South America” because of its natural splendor. World renowned poets, Pablo Neruda and Gabriela Mistral, won Nobel Prizes. The majority of Chileans are descendants of Europeans, namely Spanish, French, and German, and others in smaller numbers. Allegedly, the original inhabitants of the region prior to Spanish conquest were not natives but merely nomads who lived in the area. Their descendants are today about 3% of the population. A mixture of the so-called natives and European settlers is called “mestizo.” Today’s mestizos are so well blended that they look mostly European.

La democracia chilena ha sabido combinar certeramente políticas de crecimiento económico con políticas de inclusión social, lo que ha signifi- cado un enorme progreso para el país y para todos sus habitantes. Y, pre- cisamente, uno de los sectores que más se ha desarrollado en estas dos décadas son las obras públicas. El trabajo serio y la moderna visión que hemos impreso a este esfuerzo han significado que el país haya vivido la más grande revolución en infraestructura en toda su historia. Basta mencionar sólo un par de ejemplos: en agua potable rural, el país invertía $ 2.230 millones en 1994, mientras que para 2008 la inversión alcanzó $34.960 millones, es decir, un aumento superior al 1.500%. En embalses, mientras en el período 1970-1990 se embalsaron 40 millones de metros cúbicos de agua, en el período 1990-2011 se embalsarán 860 millones de metros cúbicos, esto es, 21 veces más de agua embalsada. Cifras igualmente impresionantes se aprecian en la red de caminos básicos y carre- teras, que se extiende en miles de kilómetros por el país, o en las obras portuarias y aeroportuarias que nos conectan con el mundo.
