Butch later studied with Dr. Paul Lam’s and his Tai Chi for Health programs and studied Traditional Sun with Tim Cartnell. We are hoping our supporters (Vendors/Shoppers/Store Volunteers) for the Gresham Senior Center (GSC) are do- ing well. The Shoppe has not been open since March. I have been able to come in at least once a month. Those of you who are dedicated vendors would be able to pick up items if you need them for a fall bazaar. Just call this number (503.988.9894) to setup a date and time if you need to pickup items. This process takes a bit of time to take items out of inventory. At this time we are not sure when we will open. The state and county makes the decision for our reopen- ing date. We serve the most vulnerable age group affected by this virus. Please also keep in mind that how the Center will operate will be in a completely different way. We will be doing temperature checks and a COVID Symptoms Questionnaire for everyone entering the Center for classes/The Shoppe. In addition, masks will be required by all. As we get closer, we will give you all complete details on how this will work. This will be a new process for all of us. Thank you in advance for your continued support thru this un- precedented time. In the past, most of our programs, activities, and services took place as we gathered to- gether in our building, and now we must develop new formats for doing things. The GSC remains committed to meeting the needs of our senior community. Keep wearing your mask, physically distance, and wash your hands! We have not been able to have fundraisers or receive monetary support from the Ambleside Shoppe or the Quilt Room We do need help to pay our rent (which has gone up.) We are still excepting in-kind donations and cash. Thanks! —— Lorrie. Store Manager

Carousels in Oregon

Remember when you were a child and you went to the fair or maybe Jantzen Beach Park to ride the Carousal and spend the day having fun. Recently I visited the Historic Carousel and Museum in Albany, OR, what a wonderful work of art! The local volunteer woodcarvers started in 2002 to carve each animal with love and others did the painting, they are absolutely beautiful. They are still carving for the twelve available spots and you can watch. You can ride for only $2.00. The museum is free but you can leave a donation. They worked hard to raise funds for the building which they open in 2017. A must see for everyone. Next on my list to visit is the Carousel at the south end of Riverfront Park in Salem, OR. The animals were all carved by volunteers and their dream came true June 2, 2001 when they held the grand opening. With donations and 300,000 riders the first year the board of directors paid off the build- ing making the carousel debit free. The power of volunteers is won- derful! They will be adding a Beaver and a Duck soon for you to ride. I wondered what happen to the Jantzen Beach Carousel. It was built in 1904 by C.W. Parker for the St. Louis World Fair. In 1928 it came to Portland OR for the opening of Jantzen Beach Amusement Park. Last ride was August 2012 at the Jantzen Beach Mall. Good news for us, it was dismantled and keep in storage until it was donated to Restore Oregon. Read below and donate so you or your grandkids can ride the carousel again for some good family fun and memories. Join fellow Oregonians to “Re-TURN” the Carousel Restore Oregon listed the carousel as one of its Most Endangered Places in 2012. Given the Carousel’s unique design, high-level of historic significance, and cultural value to generations, the carou- sel found its way to Restore Oregon’s Most Endangered Places list when it was dismantled, stored, and no longer in operation. After five years of diligent work, Restore Oregon has saved it and now we need your help to find it a new permanent home so it can “turn” once again as a year-round family attraction. Go to their website to donate. https://restoreoregon.org/jantzen-beach-carousel/ ALL GSC CLASSES
