Irish Authors Collections Guide 18 August 2020 English Literature is one of the two greatest strengths of the Rosenbach’s library collections (the other being American history). What we usually call English Literature is more precisely the English-language literature of Great Britain, Ireland, and surrounding islands. Some of the greatest writers in the English language have been Irish. Dr. Rosenbach certainly recognized this, and although we don't know that he had a special interest in Irish writers as such, it means that he did collect a number of them. His interest was chiefly in pre-20th-century literature, so apart from James Joyce there are few recent writers represented. Although they are not segregated by country of origin on the Rosenbach shelves, this guide highlights Irish authors as a particular sub-set of English-language authors. The guide is arranged in alphabetical order by author’s last name, and in the instances of James Joyce, Bram Stoker, and Oscar Wilde, the list is further broken down by collections category. Throughout this guide, all objects owned by Dr. Rosenbach are marked with an asterisk (*). Those marked with double (**) are part of Philip Rosenbach’s gift to the Foundation on January 12, 1953, consisting partly of objects from Dr. Rosenbach’s estate. This guide will be updated periodically to reflect new acquisitions and further cataloging of the Rosenbach collections. Objects acquired since 2014 are marked with a “+”. The Sun Also Rises a Book Catalogue from Capitol Hill Books and Riverby Books
The Sun Also Rises A Book Catalogue from Capitol Hill Books and Riverby Books January 27, 2017 On Hemingway, the Lost Generation, Cocktails, and Bullfighting This winter, Shakespeare Theater Company will perform The Select, a play based on Ernest Hemingway’s iconic novel The Sun Also Rises. To kick off the performance, Capitol Hill Books and Riverby Books have joined forces to assemble a collection of books and other materials related to Hemingway and the “Lost Generation.” Our catalog includes various editions (rare, medium rare, and reading copies) of all of Hemingway’s major works, and many associated materials. For instance, we have a program from a 1925 bullfight in Barcelona, vintage cocktail books, a two volume Exotic Cooking and Drinking Book, and an array of books from Hemingway’s peers and mentors. On Jan. 27th, the Pen Faulkner Foundation, the Shakespeare Theater Company, and the Hill Center are hosting an evening retrospective of Hemingway’s writing. Throughout the evening, actors, scholars, and writers will read, praise, and excoriate Hemingway. Meanwhile mixologists will sling drinks with a Hemingway theme, and we will be there to discuss Gertrude Stein, bullfighting, Death in the Gulfstream, and to talk and sell books. All of the materials in this catalog will be for sale there, and both Riverby and Capitol Hill Books will have displays at our stores set up throughout the month of February. Making the New: Literary Periodicals and the Construction of Modernism Peter Marks University of Sydney We are told that we live in a postmodernworld, experiencing unprecedented innovations, delights, and anxieties. Rather than rehearse these here, I want initially to touch brieflyon one theoretical attempt to make sense of this condition, one that definesPostmodernism in relation to its presumed antecedent, Modernism. I want to use this as a way of questioning the "monumental" view of literary Modernism, in which a massive landscape abounds with canonical texts carved by mythical giants: Joyce, Eliot, Woolf, Pound, Stein-the usual suspects. I do this by considering the role of literary periodicals in the construction, production, and initial reception of those texts. The later part of this discussion focuses on transition, the Paris-based journal of the 1920s and 1930s whose aspirations, pretensions, vigor and perilous existence typify the complex forces in play. I emphasize the point that while indi vidual periodicals consciously adopted distinct identities, they need to be understood collectively forthe vital functionsthey performed: they printed avant-garde work as well as advanced criticism and theory; acted as nurseries for experimental young writers, and as platformsfor the already-established; forged and maintained interna tional links between writers and groups; provided avant-garde writers with sophisti cated readers, and vice versa; and maintained an ipteractiveplurality of cultural dis course. Alive with the energy of experimentation, they register the fertile, complex, yet intriguingly tentative development of modem literature. In his inquisitive and provocative work, ThePostmodern Turn, lhab Hassan moves towards a concept of postmodernism by constructing a table of "certain schematic differences from modernism" (91). -

Born in Brooklyn, New York, he attended university at Georgetown and Cambridge, where he studied with I.A. Richards, and Columbia, where he studied law. In 1942 he was appointed curator of Harvard Library’s Poetry Room (established in 1931 and specialising in twentieth century poetry in English); curator of the Farnsworth Room in 1945; and Subject Specialist in English Literature in 1947. Stratis Haviaras writes in The Harvard Librarian that ‘Though five other curators preceded him, Jack Sweeney is considered the Father of the Poetry Room …’. 1 He oversaw the Poetry Room’s move to the Lamont Library, ‘establishing its philosophy and its role within the library system and the University; and he endowed it with an international reputation’.2 He also lectured in General Education and English at Harvard. He was the son of one of the richest banking families in New England, a member of the Boston Brahmin, and the nephew of Jane Norton Grew, the wife of financier J. P. Morgan, Jr.. As such, he was heir to a portion of a substantial family fortune. He was a volunteer in the American Field Service during World War I, and later served in the U.S. Ambulance Corps. He narrowly escaped with his life. Profoundly affected by his experience in World War I, Crosby vowed to live life on his own terms and abandoned all pretense of living the expected life of a privileged Bostonian. He had his father's eye for women, and in 1920 met Mrs. Richard Peabody (née Mary Phelps Jacob), six years his senior. They had sex within two weeks, and their open affair was the source of scandal and gossip among blue-blood Boston. Mary (or Polly as she was called) divorced her alcoholic husband and to her family's dismay married Crosby. Two days later they left for Europe, where they devoted themselves to art and poetry. Both enjoyed a decadent lifestyle, drinking, smoking opium regularly, traveling frequently, and having an open marriage. Crosby maintained a coterie of young ladies that he frequently bedded, and wrote and published poetry that dwelled on the symbolism of the sun and explored themes of death and suicide. -
