The present compilers are therefore mainly responsible for the refer­ ences to writings of a date later than any in the printed lists mentioned above, and writings chosen with particular regard to present aspects of the monetary question. The resulting list is broad in the area covered rather than all-inclusive o£ the resources of the Library of Congress, or of the library of the National Monetary Commission. The latter was transferred to the Library of Congress by the act of August 23, 1913, and the list here offered is also, in a certain sense, a catalogue of the more serviceable part of the collection made by the Commission. In handling such an extensive literature, a classification which separated foreign countries from the United States was found con­ venient. In the arrangement of the references, therefore, bibliog­ raphies and general works are given first, then follow references devoted to particular countries arranged alphabetically. The separ­ ate section given to the United States is subdivided along fines mainly historical, and under the heading "Present-day problems" (p. 140- 181) will be found a selection from the very great mass of pamphlet literature which recent discussions have called forth. Finally, a con­ siderable number of references covering certain special aspects of the general subject are then arranged under the headings, "Crises (panics)," "Guaranty of bank deposits/' " Credit and credit instru­ ments," "Clearing houses," and "Foreign exchange." Managing Political Risk in Global Business: Beiersdorf 1914-1990 Geoffrey Jones Christina Lubinski 1 Abstract This working paper examines corporate strategies of political risk management during the twentieth century. It focuses especially on Beiersdorf, a German-based pharmaceutical and skin care company. During World War 1 the expropriation of its brands and trademarks revealed its vulnerability to political risk. Following the advent of the Nazi regime in 1933, the largely Jewish owned and managed company, faced a uniquely challenging combination of home and host country political risk. The paper reviews the firm's responses to these adverse circumstances, challenging the prevailing literature which interprets so-called "cloaking" activities as one element of businesses’ cooperation with the Nazis. The paper departs from previous literature in assessing the outcomes of the company’s strategies after 1945. It examines the challenges and costs faced by the company in recovering the ownership of its brands. There, she focused on Jay the Family Man. In recent years various media reports have also highlited one aspect of the Organisation, the ”Rehabi- litation Project Force” – or RPF. Particularly the reports of former members who have endured the RPF in the US, the UK and in Denmark have made it possible for the author of this brochure, Prof. Ste- phen A. Kent, to describe what I consider to be inhuman practices within the RPF. If the term ”brainwashing”, so often associated with the Scientology Organisation by the public, applies at all, then it certainly applies to the RPF, as this brochure shows. The RPF is part of the ”Sea Organisation” (als known as ”Sea-Org”) of the Scientology Organisation. Sea-Org was created in 1967 and according to L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of the Scientology Organisation, it is the ”sole guarantee of the survival of Scientology technology on this planet”. Members of Sea-Org use pseudo-naval ranks and uniforms, an the unit is fully organised along military lines. Sea-Org states that its aim is to ”maintain Scientology as a functioning organisation” and that the members, according to its own publicity, have ”signed a contract of eternal service to Scientolo- gy and its aims”.

This paper provides an overview of the legal system of the religion of Scientology. To the members of the religion, this legal system supersedes and fully displaces the mainstream legal system. Scientology’s legal system is self-contained and independent, with rules, enforcement mechanisms, and correctional facilities. The overview provided in this paper will be useful to courts and to further research in the nascent yet vital field of Scientological legal research. The contents are as follows: INTRODUCTION; I. SOURCING; II. WITHIN AND WITHOUT; III. RULES; IV. ENFORCEMENT MECHANISMS; V. CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES; CONCLUSION. This fact is somewhat perplexing, as the religion was founded some seventy years ago.2 More broadly, the literature on Scientology is far sparser than that on other recently founded religions such as Jehovah’s Witnesses and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints3 (two religions which count far more adherents than 1 I am grateful to Prof. Mark Antaki, Alec Sader and Olivier Lirette for their thoughtful comments on earlier drafts.
