  • Exposure of Travel Destinations on the Front Covers of the Magazines National Geographic Traveler and Podróże
DOI: https://doi.org/10.29036/jots.v9i17.44 Exposure of Travel Destinations on the Front Covers of the Magazines National Geographic Traveler and Podróże Anna Jupowicz-Ginalska Faculty of Journalism, Information and Book Studies, University of Warsaw Received 5 May 2018; received in revised form 2 December 2018; accepted 10 December 2018 Abstract The article presents the results of the analysis of destinations presented on the front covers of Polish travel magazines: "National Geographic Traveler" and "Podróże". The author accomplished two research goals: firstly, she examined the scale of popularisation of travel destinations in two contexts: the geographical one (division into continents, countries and cities) and the chronological one (investigating changes in popularising particular travel destinations and referring them to the broader political or social context of a given time). Secondly, she indicated the differences or similarities in the selection of the destinations at the macro-level (among magazines, i.e. their editorial policies or affiliation to publishing companies) and at the micro-level (between the main and supporting cover stories). Key Words: magazines’ front covers, tourism, travel destinations, National Geographic Traveler, Podróże JEL Classification: L8, L83, Z32 1. Introduction and Review of Literature Tourism is subject to mediatisation, i.e. "a universal social process (...), meaning the adjustment of activities of various entities to the conditions defined by the specificity of the media's influence" (Oniszczuk, 2011, p. 13). With reference to the tourist sector, it concerns experiences of tourists, mutual influence of real and simulated experiences and the role of tourist 1 agencies in creating media messages (Cohen & Cohen, 2012).

  • UIC at TREC 2010 Faceted Blog Distillation
UIC at TREC 2010 Faceted Blog Distillation Lifeng Jia and Clement Yu Department of Computer Science University of Illinois at Chicago 851 S Morgan St., Chicago, IL 60607, USA {ljia2, cyu}@uic.edu ABSTRACT Our system consists of a concept-based retrieval subsystem which performs the baseline blog distillation, an opinion identification subsystem and an opinion-in-depth analysis subsystem which performs the faceted blog distillation task. In the baseline task, documents which are deemed relevant are retrieved by the retrieval system with respect to the query, without taking into consideration of any facet requirements. The feeds are ranked in descending order of the sum of the relevance scores of retrieved documents. In order to improve the recall of the retrieval subsystem, we recognize proper nouns or dictionary phrases without requiring matching all the words of the phrases. In the opinionated vs. factual and personal vs. official faceted tasks, the opinion identification subsystem is employed to recognize query-relevant opinions within the documents. Personal documents are more likely to be opinionated than official documents. In the in-depth vs. shallow faceted task, the depth of the opinion within a document is measured by the number of concepts which are related with the query the document contains. 1. INTRODUCTION With the prevalence of Internet, more and more people express their opinions by writing online. Internet provides various textual resources covering a broad range of topics. Therefore, many researchers are interested in analyzing online text corpuses in depth, such as Blogosphere. Since 2006, TREC [8] has started a new track which provides Blogosphere collections to perform various text analysis techniques such as opinion retrieval [8, 9, 10, 17,15], polarity classification [9, 10, 15] and blog distillation [9, 10, 11].

  • IQP Final Report- IQP-DA-DA14.Pdf
1 Abstract Armenia is a developing country that relies heavily on tourism for economic stability. Our project, sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution, was to create recommendations for user friendly and effective websites that would help decentralize economic prosperity by promoting tourism to rural Armenia. By defining the target audience, researching tourism attributes, and assessing competitor websites, this project established guidelines to use Search Engine Optimization and advertising platforms effectively. The outcome of this project will support efforts to increase tourism to Armenia as a whole and specifically to the rural areas. 1 Acknowledgements We would like to thank the following people for their support in making this project successful. Michael Aghajanian, Advisor Thank you for enabling us to produce a quality report and for leading us towards critical thinking. Thank you for making this project one of the most valuable experiences of our lives. Professor Diran Apelian, Advisor Thank you for teaching us the value of being a good professional.
