After the ‘discovery’ of African pygmies in the 1860s, little people became a powerful way of imaginatively connecting to an inconceivably distant past, and the place of humans within it. Little people in fin de siècle narratives have been commonly interpreted as atavistic, stunted warnings of biological reversion. I suggest that there are other readings available: by deploying two nineteenth-century anthropological theories – E. B. Tylor’s doctrine of ‘survivals’, and euhemerism, a model proposing that the mythology surrounding fairies was based on the existence of real ‘little people’ – they can also be read as positive symbols of the tenacity of the human spirit, and as offering access to a sacred, spiritual, or magic, world. -

Adrian Smith, then current Dean of the Society of American Magicians. At the time, Harold as he was known to his friends, had the largest magic library in the world. Often Harold was a dinner guest at our house and as usual after our meal “the boys” would discuss magic and collecting. Harold’s plan for his books and ephemera was to donate it all to his alma mater, Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. As we all know that’s what happened to his collection. Ed on the other hand disagreed with Harold’s plan and said that when the time came for him to dissolve his library he wanted everything to be sold; so that other collectors could enjoy what he had amassed. -

Alvarado [email protected] Submitted March 11, 2020; Accepted July 5, 2020; Published December 15, 2020 DOI: 10.31275/20201785 Creative Commons License CC-BY-NC Abstract—Some early reference works about psychic phenomena have included bibliographies, dictionaries, encyclopedias, and general over- view books. A particularly useful one, and the focus of the present article, is Nandor Fodor’s Encyclopaedia of Psychic Science (Fodor, n.d., circa 1933 or 1934). The encyclopedia has more than 900 alphabetically arranged entries. These cover such phenomena as apparitions, auras, automatic writing, clairvoyance, hauntings, materialization, poltergeists, premoni- tions, psychometry, and telepathy, but also mediums and psychics, re- searchers and writers, magazines and journals, organizations, theoretical ideas, and other topics. In addition to the content of this work, and some information about its author, it is argued that the Encyclopaedia is a good reference work for the study of developments from before 1933, even though it has some omissions and bibliographical problems. Widely used by writers interested in overviews of the literature, Fodor’s work is part of a reference literature developed over the years to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge about the early publications of the field by students of psychic phenomena. -

A Historical Study Germana Pareti Department of Philosophy and Science of Education, University of Torino, Italy Abstract. In recent times the source of interest in psychical research in Germany has been subject of relevant studies. Not infrequently these works have dealt with this phenomenon through the interpretation of the various steps and transformations present in Hans Driesch’s thought, from biology and medicine to neovital- ism, and finally to parapsychology. However these studies identified the causes of this growing involvement in paranormal research either in the historical context of “crisis” of modernity (or “crisis” in psychology), or in an attempt to “normalize” the supernatural as an alternative to the traditional experimental psychology. My paper aims instead at throwing light on the constant effort by Driesch to conceive (and found) psychical re- search as a science of the super-normal, using the methodology successfully adopted by the scientific community (especially German) in the late nineteenth century. If you knew what I know, you‟d know a hell of a lot!” – Gef Although the „talking mongoose‟ affair may now have fallen into obscurity, it was, during its heyday in the early 1930s, an international sensation. Sightseers, journalists, spiritualists, and psychic investigators such as Nandor Fodor and Harry Price (see FT229:28–36) all beat a path to Doarlish Cashen, the lonely farmhouse outside the little village of Dalby on the Isle of Man where the events took place. Despite this public scrutiny, there is still no widespread agreement as to whether the case was a hoax, an outbreak of poltergeist activity or something even stranger. I recently visited the island, and began to re-examine the Harry Price archive held at the University of London‟s Senate House Library, together with that of the Society for Psychical Research, housed in Cambridge‟s University Library. Information from islanders also proved useful. As an episode that took place nearly 80 years ago, the case of the „Dalby Spook‟ – as Gef was known on the island – seems half-forgotten, although the name is still sometimes invoked: “If something goes astray or seemingly moved from where it was left… „That will be the Dalby Spook then‟ could be said.”[1] Harry Price‟s attention was drawn to the Spook in the winter of 1932, when he received a letter from the Isle of Man: “My correspondent informed me that a farmer friend of hers, a Mr James T Irving, had discovered in his house an animal which, after a little coaxing, had developed the power of speech, and was practically human, except in form.”[2] James Irving, his wife Margaret, and their teenage daughter Voirrey lived on a farm by the name of Cashen‟s Gap (in Manx, Doarlish Cashen). -

UCCS|Undergraduate Research Journal|11.2 Insights into Victorian Spiritualism through Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights by Monica Postma Abstract This essay explores the supernatural themes in Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. It includes a brief overview of spiritualism, a popular movement at the time when the Bronte's were publishing, and through literary analysis discusses how spiritualism might have affected the Bronte's writing. In the Victorian era, ideas of the supernatural were pervasive. As the Victorians sought to explain things beyond their comprehension, whether it was the industrial revolution or the fracturing of the Christian church, belief in the supernatural abounded. The Victorians became increasingly concerned with mesmerism, spiritualism and ghost stories, and these beliefs are manifested in popular literary works from the era, such as those of the Brontes. Spiritualism, or the idea that the living could communicate with the dead comes up directly in Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights, as Heathcliff is haunted by the ghost of his lover, Catherine. Ideas of supernatural communication appear more obliquely in Jane Eyre, such as when young jane is confronted with the ghost of her uncle in the red room and when Jane and Rochester confess their love for one another on opposite sides of the country. The way that these two stories approach the question of spiritualism is distinct—throughout Jane Eyre, the titular character seeks God’s guidance and approval in every action, whilst Wuthering Heights’ embittered Heathcliff seems to have given up the hope of holy support. Various forms of magical superstitions arose and became widely accepted in the Victorian Era. -

In Psypioneer May 2006, we noted that a new web site devoted to her had been established. www.anna-kingsford.com. Mrs Kingsford’s illuminations offered a mystical interpretation of Christianity. Now Alan Pert, a University of Sydney librarian has reassessed her life in an elegant illustrated and readable biography “Red Cactus” (Australia, Books and Writers, 2006, reprinted 2007). http://www-personal.usyd.edu.au/~apert/annakingsford/excerpt.html This challenges the account given by her co-worker Edward Maitland on many points. For example, Maitland’s “Life (3rd edition, 1913) displays a considerable preoccupation with Spiritualism, but Pert argues (p.195-6) that this was his rather than Anna’s. Nevertheless, Anna remains an important part of the psychic scene in the London of 1881 when LIGHT was founded. Her friends such as C.C. Massey and Lady Caithness recur in many contexts. Pert’s biography, which draws on hitherto unknown material, is a valuable addition to scholarship. Psypioneer has imported some copies of this 246 page large paperback, this includes a 3 pp life chronology and 12pp of pictures, for sale at £14. -

Wallace’s Approach ∗ Li LIU Peking University Abstract: A. R. Wallace was the co-founder of the theory of natural selection and a solid supporter of Darwin, but he combined evolutionism with spiritualism, and tried to understand human evolution and evolutionary ethics with a spiritualistic teleology. This teleological version is a typical example of non-Darwinian evolutionism , which was rooted in the ideology of Victorian progressionism, and was used to avoid the materialism implicated in Darwinism. Through investigating Wallace's approach, we may realize how progressionism had worked as the bridge between science and religion in Victorian Age. Key Words: A. R. INTRODUCTION Alfred Russel Wallace and Charles Robert Darwin independently discovered the principle of natural selection and their articles were announced to scientific community by a joint publication, on 1st July 1858. It’s the starting point of the Darwinian revolution or as Peter Bowler put in his book, “the non-Darwinian revolution”. Stimulated by Wallace, Darwin finally finished and then published his Origin of Species, and got “the whole credit for one of the most liberating advances in scientific thought”, as Wallace “agreed of his own free will to play moon to Darwin’s sun.”1 Considered as a Darwinist, Wallace positively defended Darwinism in his time, and published a book named Darwinism (1889). -
