2018 Election Municipality of Grassland Special Issue

For the office of Reeve

Nick Nowazek I was born and raised in Brandon, . My wife and I, Victoria, moved to the Minto area in 2008. We are now a family with three children. I’ve been a truck driver for over 20 years now. I have always been interested in politics. I was elected as a Councillor for the newly amalgamated Municipality of Grassland in 2014. I really enjoy getting out, meeting and working with the people in the area. In the election, I am running for Reeve. If I’m elected, I will look into more cost effective ways to do municipal works and road maintenance. I believe feasibility, accountability and responsibility should be worked into all municipal decisions.

Blair Woods I have lived in this area since 1960. I attended school in Elgin and Hartney and became a farmer following a multi generation farming family. I have been involved with other organizations at local, provincial and national levels such as Snoman, Sunflower Association, 4-H and Lions Club.

Council History - Councillor for Whitewater Municipality from 1986 - 2002 - Reeve for Whitewater Municipality from 2006 - 2014 - Reeve for Municipality from 2014 - 2018

I have been involved with the amalgamation of three councils into the Municipality of Grassland. I take pride in being part of this team and accomplishing positive changes for this area. I have maintained a good working relationship with residents, staff and council. I will continue the “open-door” policy in the future with all areas of concern for Grassland. It has been a priority to always keep the safety of our volunteers and staff throughout the municipality. Equipment, policies and procedures need to be maintained and followed by everyone.

Economic growth will continue to be a focus for council. I will continue to challenge the provincial government to review and justify the portioning of tax at the municipal level on farmland reassessments. Maintenance of the core operations of this municipality, such as roads, sewer and water systems, recreation facilities and environmental waste disposal sites will continue to be a priority as well as further development and encouragement of new residents and businesses to this area.

I graciously ask for your continued support in the October 24, 2018 Election. Please contact me at (204) 769-2358 or (204) 483-0058 (cell) if you have any questions or concerns.

Claude Martin I have been a resident of this municipality all my life. I have represented this area as a councillor for 29 years. My father and grandfather also share the same responsibility before me. I support, the municipal differential tax for the next four years, the volunteer fire department, the recreational facilities in our municipality and the agricultural industry. On October 24, 2018, I solicit your support. Vote for experience.

Ewen Mosby I’m Ewen Mosby, a council candidate for Ward One, (the former R.M. of Cameron), in the amalgamated Municipality of Grassland. I operate a century farm; my wife Amy and I are the parents of two and the grandparents of four. Prior to my terms on council, I was part of the various volunteer groups that built such community assets as the Hartney Centennial Centre, and Hartney rink and I served in various capacities on the local committee of and the district one board for Keystone Agricultural Producers. Both prior to and concurrently with my years on council, I served on the board of Cameron Lodge, the Hartney-Cameron Airport Commission and the executive of the Hartney Flying Club.

For the office of two councillors for Ward 2 Ron Bodin My name is Ron Bodin (Bogie as most of you know me) and I am proud to announce my running for councilor for ward 2 in the town of Hartney. I was born in Souris, MB in 1967, and was raised on the family farm at Deleau. I attended Hartney School until grad- uating in 1985. I am married to Laurie, who works at Sunrise Credit Union here in town. We have six children in our combined family, with one son residing here in Hart- ney. Four of our kids are in Alberta and one is in New Brunswick playing Junior A hock- ey. I have been around Southwestern Manitoba most of my life, except for about 10 years in Alberta where we owned and operated a landscaping company north of Calgary. I worked in conjunction with builders in different towns with infrastructure, building specifications, subdivisions, grade work, etc. I moved back to Hartney in 2011 and took a job with Tundra Oil and Gas where I am presently employed as a Lead Operator in the Hartney, Whitewater, Deloraine, Goodland's fields. I feel that with my experience in the landscaping business, one thing I can offer is helping to deal with growth in our town and the issues related to this. I am very excited about our community with the baby boom happening and the young families choosing Hartney as home to raise their family.

Bruce Evans Thanks for all your support over the past 20 years. It is time for me to step aside. Please select to vote from the other three very capable candidates. Friday, September 28, 2018, Bruce submitted a letter stating he would like to withdraw from the election.

Coral Miller My name is Coral Miller. I’ve lived in Grassland since 2004, after I left . My two sons and 3 granddaughters still live in Winnipeg and are the best reasons for me to visit the city as often as I can. I’ve been a municipal councillor for the Town of Hartney for the past 4 years. I currently sit on the Age Friendly Committee, Cemetery Commit- tee, Centennial Centre Committee and Economic Development Committee, I’m on the Board of Cameron Lodge (secretary) and the Board of Seniors Organized Services (treasurer). I believe that the Municipality of Grassland, with all of its unique communi- ties, is the perfect place to work, play, raise our families and enjoy our retirement. I’m committed to ensuring that people of all ages and abilities will want to continue calling the Municipality of Grassland home. The “wheels of the Government” turn pretty slowly but I’m currently working on projects and watching some ideas that promise to benefit you and the Municipality and I sincerely hope you will vote for me on October 24th so that I can see these projects through to their conclusion. I’d be happy to discuss any of your questions or concerns with you anytime. I can be reached at (204) 741-0100.

Dan Lachapelle

My name is Dan Lachapelle I grew up in Elgin and have lived here most of my life. Over the years I have seen a few changes and going forward I would like to see a few more.

Vote for me and help improve the quality of life in our beautiful town.

Ruth Mealy

I live on our family farm three miles west of Minto, where my husband, Trevor, operates a grain farm and where we raised our two sons, Taylor (20) and Hudson (18). I have been very involved in the community over the years and was on the board of the Minto Nursery School, founding board member of the Minto Mini Mustang Daycare and later serving on the executive of the Minto Parent Associa- tion Council for several years. More recently, it has been my privilege to serve on the board of the Minto and Area Philanthropic Committee. I have worked as a teacher, an entrepreneur, a local eco- nomic developer, and for the last 14 years as a rural economic development specialist for the Province of Manitoba where my work has included the development of programs and resources for rural and northern communities in Manitoba. During my time with the province, I have helped many rural mu- nicipalities to identify opportunities and implement community plans and feel my experience in this field will be an asset if I am elected as councillor. Over the past 4 years, I have also been a board member of the Canadian Rural Revitalization Foundation, a charity that is involved in advocating for rural issues in Can- ada. As a resident of this municipality for the past 22 years, I feel I have an appreciation for the issues in our municipality and will do my best to deal with issues as effectively as possible. I will strive to work in collaboration with the many groups and organizations in the municipality that are also working hard to make this a great place to live. We have a tremen- dous amount of potential in this municipality and it will be my goal to build on the strengths and opportunities that we have to offer in this municipality for economic growth and to attract new families and residents. Please vote on Septem- ber 24th! Bob Miller

I attended Fairfax, Elgin, Minto and Boissevain schools and have lived in Elgin/Whitewater for over 30 years. I have been on various committees and organizations, being, Legion, Lions, Fire Dept., Weed District, Hospital Foundations and Elgin Village Committee. Because the old Whitewater Mu- nicipality had 4 councillors and now having only 2 councillors for the same area we need to keep a STRONG voice. I am seeking another term as councillor for the Municipality of Grassland and will continue to question the spending habits of Council, put in place a better communication system, strive for clean water in Elgin, listen to the Constituents and address to council each and every concern. I believe I have the passion and experience to carry us through another 4 years and I am asking for your vote on October 24th.

John W. Sparrow

I have lived in the community all my life. I have been a farmer for 32 years and have worked at Agri quest for 10 years. I graduated from University of Manitoba with a diploma in Agriculture. I have been a Lion member, been on multiple church boards and rink boards, as well as I have been a school trustee for one term.

I have been a councillor for 8 years. I am going to try and keep a hold on spending, try for a budget on road maintenance as well as aim for employee accountability in their positions.

Please remember to vote on October 24, 2018.

For the office of three Committee members for the LUD of Elgin Jaye Cameron Relocated to Elgin in 2009, after retiring as a Millwright in the Mine in Thompson. Looked after the water treatment plant in Elgin from 2011 - 2013. Was involved with the arena in Elgin for a year, held a position on the museum board as well as a member of the Lions Club. Worked for local farmers for a time. Plan on spending the rest of my life in Elgin and want to help the community in anyway I can. Your vote can make this possible. Thank you.

Gray Evans I move to the community 13 years ago after passing of my dad, who left me his estate. I’ve made many friends around the community. I’ve worked at Tweeds Farm Equipment, heavy duty mechanic work at Vandaele as heavy duty mechanic and have since started my own business in June of 2018, painting and other little house- hold repairs for my community. I would like to try and address the Public's concerns whether it's streets or water which is much needed attended to and other concerns as my fella neighbour's may bring to the board. Other than that, I’m not sure what people like to know and also I don't make any promises. f something can be done then let's get it done. Thank you and don't forget to vote for the person that you think will be best for our community.

Cecile McMurray Member of the community for over 50 years. Held committee position for 2 terms + half term. Held a position in Economic Development Board, a member of the District Health committee for 6 years. Marriage commissioner for many years, held officer positions in both the Legion Auxilliary and Legion Zone as well as with the Lions. Helped to imple- ment the numbering system for Elgin. I have always thought the Village of Elgin as one of the best places to live. The village may be small and I have seen many changes and as time past people have left and moved into the village. The Village of Elgin turned 125 years this year, and would like to help build this community into a vibrant and on going community. I ask for your help and support in this.
