Raymond Williams N HER 1971 ESSAY, "When We Dead Awaken," Adrienne Rich writes of the I "psychic geography" explored by her generation of women poets "as we try to find language and images for a consciousness we are just coming into, and with little in the past to support us" (168). For Irish women poets who have come of age in the closing decades of the twentieth century, the exploration of that psychic geography has been conducted within the widely held belief that theirs was the first generation to break into the male-dominated Irish literary scene. A reading of the anthologies and critical studies of Irish poetry which have proliferated since the 1970s only confirms that belief. 1 The "vital texts" (167) written by Irish poets in post-Independence Ireland have been profoundly, one might even be tempted to say systematically, buried, denied, repressed, and discounted. In more recent years, it has been, on the one hand, the source of fierce literary debate, such as that sparked by the publication of the Field Day Anthology of Irish Writing in 1991, and on the other hand, of woeful neglect. But surely the most marginalized of this mar­ ginalized community are the poets who had first collections published between 1921 and 1950, such as Rhoda Coghill, Irene Haugh, Temple Lane, Dorothy M. Large, May Morton, Mary Devenport O'Neill, Lorna Reynolds, Blaniad Salkeld, Elizabeth Shane, and Sheila Wingfield. An investigation of the Irish journals and newspapers that regularly pub­ lished poetry from the 1920s to the 1950s tells another story. In this version of events, women were an integral part of the Irish literary scene. There is evi­ dence that they supported each other's work, had the support of male editors, and their collections, published both in Ireland and the United Kingdom, were regularly reviewed in Irish publications. This article, therefore, is an exercise in recovery: in doculnenting a chain of literary events that has contributed sig- 1. Any information regarding copyright holders for these poets would be much appre­ ciated. 309 Published by Digital Commons @ Colby, 2001 1 Colby Quarterly, Vol. 37, Iss. 4 [2001], Art. 4 310 COLBY QUARTERLY nificantly to their marginalization, and in exploring of the work of three poets, Rhoda Coghill, Mary Devenport O'Neill, and Blanaid Salkeld, whose work may be read as a palimpsest which emerges through the ink stains of present-day Irish poets. **** THE FIRST MAJOR ACT of exclusion was in the 1970s with Michael Smith's New Writers Press project. Smith's attempted revival of Irish modernist poetry was predicated on the idea that a body of work comprising an alterna­ tive Irish tradition lay fallow. This alternative tradition, as Smith writes in volume 4 of The Lace Curtain, "has been completely ignored as if it didn't exist" (3). In issue after issue of The Lace Curtain Smith restored to the Irish reading public poetry long out of print by writers such as Brian Coffey, Denis Devlin, Lyle Donahgy, Patrick MacDonogh, Thomas MacGreevy, and indeed, Samuel Beckett. His seemingly exhaustive research into this alterna­ tive Irish tradition, however, was overwhelmingly gendered male. Nearly all of the poetry by women represented in the journal are either not part of the thirties' generation (as Smith calls them), such as Maire Mhac an tSaoi, or are not Irish, such as Ingeborg Bachmann. In fact, the only Irish women poet of the thirties to find her way into The Lace Curtain was Lorna Reynolds, who was active in the 1970s as an academic in the field of Anglo-Irish literature. In the 1980s, a decade in which an unprecedented interest in Irish poetry was tangibly manifested in the publication of several literary studies as well as major anthologies, these women fared no better. The perceived absence of not only any notable Irish women poet, but any female poet post-Katharane Tynan and pre-Eavan Boland was evident fron1 anthologies such as Maurice Harmon's Irish Poets After Yeats (1979; reprint 1981) and Thomas Kinsella's The New Oxford Book ofIrish Verse (1986; reprint 1989), in which not a sin­ gle twentieth-century Irish woman poet appears. Brendan Kennelly's The Penguin Book of Irish Verse (1970; reprint 1981) includes women from the revival period (such as Lady Wilde, b. 1820 and Emily Lawless, b. 1845), and poets from the current generation (Eilean Nf Chuilleanain, b. 1942 and Eavan Boland, b. 1945), but no poets in-between. This absence was reinforced by major critical studies, such as Robert F. Garratt's Modern Irish Poetry: Tradition and Continuity from Yeats to Heaney (1986; reprint 1989) and Dillon Johnston's Irish Poetry After Joyce (1985) in which no woman poet except Katharine Tynan, albeit briefly, is mentioned. Given the overwhelming lack of acknowledgement by critics and antholo­ gists it is not surprising that this absence became self-perpetuating. By 2000, however, it becomes harder to understand how these women continued to remain part of hidden Ireland. In 1988 Wolfhound Press published A. A. Kelly's Pillars of the House: An Anthology of Verse by Irish Women from 1690 to the Present. Kelly's anthology was groundbreaking in providing a road map for Irish women's poetry, with a small but representative selection of poems per poet (including the poets mentioned at the outset of this essay), https://digitalcommons.colby.edu/cq/vol37/iss4/4 2 Schreibman: Irish Women Poets 1929-1959 Some Foremothers SUSAN SCHREIBMAN 311 and well-researched biographical notes. Yet, throughout the 1990s the exclu­ sion persisted. John Wilson Foster's Colonial Consequences: Essays in Irish Literature and Culture (1991) gives the impression that no women wrote in Ireland. (None are mentioned in the table of contents or on the back blurb. There is no index.) Not only male critics ignored the poetry of this generation. Patricia Boyle Haberstroh missed an important opportunity, in Women Creating Women: Contemporary Irish Women Poets (1996), to establish a continuous tradition of poetry written by women during the twentieth century as a precedent for the poets of her study, opting instead when discussing the period between the wars, to examine how W. B. Yeats and Patrick Kavanagh portrayed women. Even when Anne Colman took exception to Haberstroh's reading of foremothers in her 1997 review of the book for the Irish Review entitled "Women Forgetting Foremothers," nan1ing predecessors from the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries, she leapt from the twilight poets to those of the present day without identifying a single mid-century foremother. And Eilfs Nf Dhuibhne, in her introduction to Voices on the Wind: Women Poets ofthe Celtic Twilight (1995), an anthology that did a great service to the revival poets, writes that "some immensely gifted women in Ireland wrote in the decades between independence and the 1960s," while also perceiving that there was generally a hiatus: "women in Ireland did not follow the pattern established during the revival. Instead we have waited until the 1960s or 1970s to have another resurgence of writing by Irish women, a second literary revival" (14). Much of the neglect throughout the 1990s is also due, in part, to Eavan Boland's groundbreaking pamphlet, A Kind of Scar: The Woman Poet in a National Tradition (1989) which has been extremely influential in setting the agenda for the ways in which contemporary Irish women's poetry has been understood and studied. Boland's premise exists in the then1es, re-memories, and insights implicit in her poem "The Achill Woman," which serves as a pre­ lude to the essay. The essay itself opens with Boland recalling the incident that inspired the poem: an incident in which Boland had her first inkling of the disparity between the lived world and the seemingly contradictory world of the text. Close on the heels of the prose description of the origins of the poem, Boland states the central theme of her essay: [O]ver a relatively short time-certainly no more than a generation or so-women have moved from being the subjects and objects of Irish poems to being the authors of them. It is a momen­ tous transit. It is also a disruptive one. It raises questions of identity, issues of poetic motive and ethical direction which can seem almost impossibly complex... Most importantly, it changes our idea of the Irish poem; of its composition and authority, of its right to appropriate certain themes and make certain fiats. (6-7) Yet, these themes had already been appropriated, and these fiats had already been made, albeit not always through a voice comn10n to post-World War II writing.     A Reappraisal of the Short Stories of Mary Lavin Theresa Wray A Thesis submitted in Candidature for The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Cardiff University July 2013 i Summary This thesis re-examines selected short stories of Irish writer Mary Lavin, placing a particular focus on fiction she published from the early 1940s to the late 1950s. Drawing on extensive archival research into Lavin’s unpublished correspondence, it uncovers how the transatlantic aspects of Lavin’s biography intersect with key elements of the social and cultural history of mid-twentieth-century Ireland. It also provides vital new evidence to scholars through its explicit use of correspondence between Lavin’s father, Tom Lavin, and his employers, the Bird family. The thesis shows how a mixture of autobiographical experience, social and political context and an empathetic awareness of the significance of various cultural inheritances, inflects Lavin’s realist style. Analysing important stories across the main span of her writing, the thesis contends that Lavin is a major figure, with a unique perspective on her times. Despite valuable early literary studies in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and some increasing attention during the 1990s, we have only recently begun to see a more sustained resurgence of interest in Lavin’s fiction. While such a shift is welcome, this thesis argues that a perceived lack of complexity in Lavin’s fiction still remains and needs to be challenged in order to reveal the true value of her oeuvre. The thesis offers a new analysis of Lavin’s writing that tracks major themes, appraises her use of the novella form, and recognises the richness and significance of her contribution to the Irish literary canon.

    139 Book Reviews: Writers at Work in Ireland and England Irish Poetry and the Construction of Modern Identity: Ireland between Fantasy and History. By Stan Smith. Dublin: Irish Academic Press, 2005. x + 238 pp. $65.00 cloth, $29.50 paper. The world is not wanting in histories of Irish poetry, or even of twen- tieth-century Irish poetry in particular: I know of at least ten since 1988. Nevertheless, Stan Smith’s Irish Poetry and the Construction of Modern Identity represents an important accomplishment. Smith’s color title, “Ire- land between Fantasy and History,” suggests precisely what he’s after—the ways in which poetry has functioned in the self-conscious shaping of mod- ern Irish identities. Smith’s interest in what he calls, while discussing Pa- draic Fallon, “the compounding and interpretation of story and history” (39), develops from the work he’s undertaken in such books as Inviolable Voice: History and 20th-Century Poetry (1982) or The Origins of Mod- ernism: Eliot, Pound, Yeats and the Rhetorics of Renewal (1994). Smith has always attended to how ideology yokes together signifier and signified. In this book, however, perhaps because questions of tradition and nation have been more overtly a part of nation-building in Ireland than in Britain, post-structuralist and post-colonial theory have inflected Smith’s atten- tion in ways rather more dramatic than I have seen in his earlier work. Theory is rarely Smith’s overt topic; it shows up rather in his ability to see organization rather than organicism, history subjected to question rather than nature subjecting us.

The ‘Confessional’ by Lawrence Emery which opens this Irish Blast has a fine ranting tone: ‘We railed against the psychopedantic parlours of our elders and their old maidenly consorts, hoping the while with an excess of Picabia and banter, a whiff of Dadaist Europe to kick Ireland into artistic wakefulness.’ The aggressive Modernism of the doomed journal, and the harshness of the context it expects to insert itself into, is evident in its defense of Joyce and Picasso against philistine taste. The inclusion of Ussher’s translation of ‘The Midnight Court’ also carries a political weight – its bawdy invoking a different Irish tradition from that of the Celtic Twilight (it was to be republished in 1926 with an polemical introduction by Yeats).

    Title: Modernist Presses and the Gayfield Press A brief description of the Gayfield Press is outlined in the Liam Miller’s history of The Dolmen Press which Miller owned and edited. Miller’s first publication was Thomas Kinsella’s The Starlit Eye which he printed on a wooden press: “loaned from Cecil French Salkeld, who used it to publish his Gayfield Press series of Dublin poets and artists”.1 Since the publication of Miller’s text, the Gayfield Press has received little attention and its history has been lost or forgotten. Furthermore, the role of Blanaid Salkeld as a publisher has been virtually erased from literary studies of the period. This paper sheds light on this little-known feminist press, and foregrounds the key role of Salkeld as a contributor, editor and publisher of the Gayfield Press. The consideration of this press as a feminist enterprise reinstates Salkeld back into the narrative of Irish publishing and enhances our understanding of private printing presses as a vital force for female creativity. Blanaid Salkeld (1880-1959), was born in India and brought up in Fitzwilliam Street, Dublin. Her early influences included poet John Keats and the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore, a friend of her father, whom she met as a young girl in India.2 She married an Englishman in the Bombay civil service in 1902 but was widowed and returned to Ireland in 1906 with her son, the artist Cecil ffrench Salkeld (1903-1969). She joined the Abbey Theatre, appearing under the stage name Nell Byrne and took the lead role in George Fitzmaurice’s Country Dressmaker in 1907.

    PINAKI ROY Sidney Keyes: The War-Poet Who ‘Groped For Death’ f the Second World War (1939-45) was marked by the unforeseen annihilation of human beings—with approximately 60 million military and civilian deaths (Mercatante 3)—the second global belligerence was also marked by an Iunforeseen scarcity in literary commemoration of the all-destructive belligerence. Unlike the First World War (1914-18) memories of which were recorded mellifluously by numerous efficient poets from both the sides of the Triple Entente and Central Powers, the period of the Second World War witnessed so limited a publication of war-writing in its early stages that the Anglo-Irish litterateur Cecil Day-Lewis (1904-72), then working as a publications-editor at the English Ministry of Information, was galvanised into publishing “Where are the War Poets?” in Penguin New Writing of February 1941, exasperatedly writing: ‘They who in folly or mere greed / Enslaved religion, markets, laws, / Borrow our language now and bid / Us to speak up in freedom’s cause. / It is the logic of our times, / No subject for immortal verse—/ That we who lived by honest dreams / Defend the bad against the worse’. Significantly, while millions of Europeans and Americans enthusiastically enlisted themselves to serve in the Great War and its leaders were principally motivated by the ideas of patriotism, courage, and ancient chivalric codes of conduct, the 1939-45 combat occurred amidst the selfishness of politicians, confusing international politics, and, as William Shirer notes, by unsubstantiated feelings of defeatism among world powers like England and France, who could have deterred the offensive Nazis at the very onset of hostilities (795-813).

The investigation charts and analyzes the demographics of 64 poets who were published in 1967, and 75 poets who were published in four small press literary magazines in 2010. The 2010 magazines were purposely sampled as representatives of specific geographical areas in Canada (i.e., the West Coast, the Prairies, Central Canada, and the East Coast). The results indicate that in 1967 female poets were less likely to be published; however, 43 years later, this bias has been rectified.

    Oral Tradition, 4/1-2 (1989): 174-88 Sung Poetry in the Oral Tradition of the Gulf Region and the Arabian Peninsula Simon Jargy Historical Background As far back as we can go in the past history of the Arabs and Arabia, we fi nd poetry present as a huge memorial to their real and imaginary heroic exploits, as a witness to their way of life and feelings, and most of all as an expression of the deepest roots of their soul. Being essentially oral in its origins and developments, this poetry, with its rhythms, intonations, accents, and long or short syllables fi tted in quite naturally with music. In the old classical Arabic terminology, poetry (Shicr) identifi es with song (Nashīd): reciting it is synonymous with singing it (Anshada al-Shicr). This bond between Shicr (poetry) and Inshād (chant or recitative) still has the same meaning in the spoken Arabic of the Peninsula and the Gulf region where Nishīda (song) is synonymous with Giṣīda (poem). In pre-Islamic Arabia, Inshād likely had a dual function: religious and social. Both stem from the rhythmical syllables of the Arabic language (rhymed prose: Sajc, and metrical poetry: Shicr), as well as from rhythmical movements of camels. Coming from ancient times, this is the Ḥidā’ (literally “stimulating the camel’s step”) that the Bedouin sings following the steps of his camel and for his own entertainment. It has survived in the actual form we call “recitative” or “cantilena,” as the common Ḥadwā still designates, in the spoken Bedouin dialect of the Gulf, the folk songs of both the desert and the sea.
