Newsletter Fall 12 The Home with a Heart Keeping families together when they need each other the most. The Newsletter for the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana Fall 2012 Pop Tabs Provide a Lesson in Compassion On June 14, this past summer, a caravan of eight SUVs filled with 30 children and 15 adults from Greencastle, IN, arrived at the Ronald McDonald House with a small U-Haul trailer in tow loaded with 1.2 million pop tabs. As the children poured out of the vehicles to unload the pop tabs, the excitement and energy in the air was palpable. The children were students from Deer Meadow Primary and Bainbridge Elementary Schools, and they had been anticipating this day for the past year and a half. Among the children was eight-year-old Eli Hardwick, who was the motivation and inspiration behind the collection. “The day we took the pop tabs to the Ronald McDonald House was a day of celebration for all of us,” said Laurie. “It was just a happy, happy day.” Eli, Laurie and Jim Hardwick present the “Pop Tab Collect-A-Million Club” plaque to Deer Meadow Principal, Gwen Morris. Almost two years earlier, then 6-year-old Eli, a first- grader at Deer While Jim and Laurie rarely left Eli’s side, they found “a very Meadow, was hit by a car in a parking lot after he darted between two special place” – the Ronald McDonald House at Riley—just steps parked cars and into the path of an oncoming car while chasing a away from Eli where they could get a few hours of sleep, soccer ball. His parents, Jim and Laurie, were with him every step of the way. “I cannot say enough about how grateful we are for the Ronald McDonald House. After three days of not sleeping we were so “Scans and tests revealed significant damage to his brain,” said thankful to have a hot shower and a comfortable bed to get some Laurie. “Doctors told us that he could be on a respirator the rest of rest,” said Laurie. “The kindness and support from the staff and his life and that he may not remember anyone. And they said people there was overwhelming. I will never forget them.” more than once that ‘he would be different.’” The Hardwicks experienced an outpouring of love and support from their Greencastle community, as well. Some of the schools in the area had already been collecting pop tabs in support of the Ronald McDonald House, but when they heard about Eli, collecting the tabs became a lesson of compassion and very personal. Even local businesses got involved. “The list of incredibly nice things our community has done for us goes on and on,” said Laurie. As the Greencastle community rallied behind the Hardwick family, Eli started to make what everyone called a miraculous recovery. After a month in the hospital Eli was able to go home and today he is back on the soccer field and, according to Laurie, “doing great in school.” “The day we took the pop tabs to the Ronald McDonald House Students and parents delivered 1.2 million pop tabs to the House this past was a day of celebration for all of us,” said Laurie. “It was just a June in honor of Eli Hardwick. happy, happy day.” A Message from Our Executive Director Dear Friends, Fall is here, which always reminds me of the wonderful events and activities just around the corner. The Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis 500: Increasing Competition in Open-Wheeled Automobile Racing in the United States Robert W. White Department of Sociology and Andrew J. This is especially evident in recent years. The 1996 “split” between the Indy Racing League (IRL; later, the IndyCar Series) and Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART; later the Champ Car World Series) severely hurt the sport. Following the split there was a well-documented decline in fan interest from which the sport has not recovered. Less understood, however, is that under the Indy Racing League the Indianapolis 500, the premier event in open-wheeled racing in the United States, became more competitive. Ironically, while fan interest decreased in the Indy Racing League era, the quality of racing increased. The increased competition associated with the Indy Racing League is a historically significant development that bodes well for the future of the sport.

More than 27 Years of Helping Sick Children Through Motorsports The Program The Team Fast Facts Media Coverage Photos - Special Events www.racingforkids.org The Program Racing For Kids® is a unique national charity, which uses the popularity of motorsports to bring attention and funding to the health care needs of children and child health institutions. At the heart of the program are visits to Children’s Hospitals by the Racing For Kids drivers in the cities where they race. The drivers spend time with each sick child, sharing stories about their racing careers, signing autographs and giving out the popular Racing For Kids hats. For many hospitalized youngsters, these visits by the racers are the lone bright spot in what is often a rather gloomy experience. Attending physicians report that these visits play an important part in each child’s recovery therapy. Racing For Kids representatives have visited close to 30,000 sick children in more than 575 hospital visits in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and Australia. Another important aspect of the Racing For Kids program is the funding that has been raised for Children’s Hospitals across the country. Since its founding in Detroit in 1989, Racing For Kids has raised more than $6.5 million through donations, specific fund raising events and in-kind gifts. Major sponsors of Racing For Kids include Humana, Inc., Bridgestone Firestone Trust Fund, TranSystems, Meridian Health Plan of Michigan, Benson Ford, Jr. and Douglas E. Fregin. Toyota Motorsports and The Grand Prix Foundation of Long Beach have made Racing For Kids a major charity of The Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN June 16, 2010 – 15-year-old Andretti Autosport driver Zach Veach obtained his drivers permit last week to begin training to add a driver’s license to accompany his IMSA closed-circuit auto-racing license. While his father will be assisting him in learning to drive on today’s highways, Veach needs little introduction to closed- circuit driving. Veach heads to Iowa Speedway for his June 19 Cooper Tires presents the USF2000 National Championship powered by Mazda event, the fourth round of his 2010 season. “I’m really excited to be racing at Iowa this weekend,” said Veach, who wrapped a campaign with Oprah Winfrey’s “No Phone Zone” last month with 33 Indy 500 drivers, CNN’s Anderson Cooper and IZOD IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard. “Iowa is right in the thick of grass-roots racing and I’m told the race weekend has been a sell-out every year the IndyCar Series has been there. We had a lot of work to do after the ORP race last month, but I think we’ve improved in the areas we were lacking. It will be great to be back in the race car, as I’ve been training on my racing sim and now that school is out, this summer will be all about the racing.” While Veach’s primary training has been in wheeling street and road course events, he’ll take his first tour of the 7/8- mile Iowa Speedway when practice begins on June 18 for only his second oval race of his budding career.
