MARKET HOUSE THEATRE SEASON 57 1 Welcome to Market House Theatre! MHT had its beginning in 1963 when a small acting troupe had the vision to transform the 1905 public market house into a theatre. Since then, the Theatre has seen phenomenal growth and draws audiences from across the region.

The mission of the Market House Theatre is to develop and share the creative abilities of children and adults through arts education classes and the production of plays. The organization also brings theatre into the schools as a teaching tool for math, science, social studies, history and literacy.

4 MARKET HOUSE THEATRE SEASON 57 MARKET HOUSE THEATRE SEASON 57 5 Director’s Notes Emily Griffin “Anyone who writes down to children is simply wasting his time. You have to write up, not down. Children are demanding. They are the most attentive, curious, eager, observant, sensitive, quick, and generally congenial readers on earth. They accept, almost without question, anything you present them with, as long as it is presented honestly, fearlessly, and clearly. I handed them, against the advice of experts, a mouse-boy, and they accepted it without a quiver. In Charlotte’s Web, I gave them a literate spider, and they took that.”

This quote by E.B. White says so much about the importance of stories and the way we tell them to children. In particular, that what we tell them is absorbed by curious and attentive minds who have yet to know much more than trust in the adults around them. But also, that they can handle reality be it within the context of a story or their own lives. That is to say, we can tell sad stories to children because sad stories encompass a part of life they are still curious about, and because within the sad story there is great joy as well. When you show them the ugly, they will find the beautiful.

That may be what makes Charlotte’s Web such an enduring and beloved story. There is sadness. There is joy. There is commitment to the kind of truth telling we all long for. We hope we were able to capture the spirit of this story the way E.B. White intended and that you enjoy watching as much as we enjoyed creating.
