By Ryan James @RyanJamesMN (Northstar Hoops - The Breakdown - Gophers Illustrated)

Omaha Central (NE): The Eagles have started the year 5-2 behind head coach Ben Holling who is in his first year as head coach at Central (was previously an assistant at the school). Central is ranked fourth in Nebraska’s Class A level of after seven games. When it comes to size the Eagles can compete with most because they start a frontline of 6-foot-7 Maguy Agau and 6-foot-8, 240 pound Isaiah Poor Bear-Chandler with 6-foot-7, 250 pound Daishon Neal backing them up. In the backcourt junior K’Zhan Jimerson is pound for pound as tough as they come getting double-doubles regularly as a 5-foot-9 guard. Both teams are nicknamed the Eagles.

Apple Valley (MN): The second ranked Class AAAA team in Minnesota, the 9-1 Eagles recently lost their first regular season game in over two calendar years. The Eagles are led by the 22 points of sophomore standout Gary Trent Jr (a four star Rivals.com prospect) who has offers from Minnesota, Texas Tech, and Providence and is the son of former Minnesota Timberwolf and ten year NBA veteran Gary Trent Sr. Apple Valley leading rebounder Brock Bertram is a junior averaging a double-double (14.6 points and 11.5 rebounds a game) and he holds a Texas Tech offer. Also with a Texas Tech offer is freshman guard Tre Jones (brother of Duke point guard Tyus Jones) who leads the Eagles at just under six assists a game. Junior Jordan Bolton is the second leading scorer at 16 a contest. Trent is the number one sophomore in state and Jones is the number one freshman in state (both rankings from NorthstarHoopsReport.com).

Key Match-Up: Brock Bertram vs Isaiah Poor Bear-Chandler. Apple Valley will have a backcourt talent edge on Central but the Eagles can match them with in frontcourt power. Chandler getting an edge inside would level the playing field so expect Central to let him (and Agau) touch the ball early and often.

Top Prospects: Omaha Central: Ramsey Adams (6-ft-5, Jr, Power Forward), Maguy Agau (6-ft-7, Sr, Power forward), Roman Behrens (6-ft-0, Fr, Guard), Isaiah Poor Bear-Chandler (6-ft-8, So, Center), K’Zahn Jimerson (5-ft-9, Jr, Point guard), Daishon Neal (6-ft-7, Sr, Center) Apple Valley: Brock Bertram (6-ft-10, Jr, Center), Jordan Bolton (6-ft-0, Jr, Shooting guard), Steve Christiansen (6-ft-6, Sr, Power forward), Tre Jones (6-ft-1, Fr, Point guard), Cameron Kirksey (6-ft-5, Jr, Small forward), Austin Korba (6-ft-5, Sr, Small forward), Gary Trent Jr (6-ft-4, So, Shooting guard)

North Scott (IA): North Scott was in the Twin Cities a month ago and defeated three time Class AAA champion DeLaSalle 67-66 lead by 30 points from University of North Dakota bound Cortez Seals. The Lancers are 5-1 on the season and traveling will not affect their game. They will have played only two games in their home gym before the Timberwolves Shootout and three of the games were out of state. Seals and fellow senior Marlon Stewart (signed with Creighton) are both averaging 21 points per game. The duo will take 60 percent of the shots for their team and score two-thirds of the points. Cortez and Stewart are two of the top four seniors in the state of Iowa according to PrepHoopsIowa.com.

Cretin-Derham Hall (MN): The Raiders were preseason number one but they have dropped a couple games and injuries to Northeastern bound senior point guard Donnell “Red” Gresham and junior Jalan Ousley-Brown have hurt them in their biggest games. All team leading CDH scorer Sam Neumann (singed with Montana State) and Joe Rosga have the team at 8-2 in the absence of their teammates averaging 22 and 20 points a game respectively. The Raiders have seen an emergence from junior guard Jordan Ammons and freshman Daniel Oturu which has helped them win 8 of 10.

Key Match-Up: Cortez Seals vs Joe Rosga. Seals attacked the DeLaSalle defense head on for 36 minutes and will do that again today. Seals has signed at the D1 level and Rosga feels he should be playing at that level so this is a great chance for the Raider to show on both ends that he can compete with the best. If either of these scorers has an off day, his team is likely to struggle.

Top Prospects: North Scott: Marlon Stewart (6-ft-1, Sr, Point guard), Cortez Seales (6-ft-4, Sr, Shooting Guard), Grant Graham (6-foot-1, Sr, Shooting guard), Trey Kilburg (6-ft-0, Sr, Shooting guard), Rickey Grimes (6-ft-1, Sr, Small Forward). Cretin-Derham Hall: Joe Rosga (6-ft-2, Sr, Shooting guard), Sam Neumann (6-ft-5, Sr, Small Forward), Jordan Ammons (6-ft-2, Jr, Shooting guard), Chris Perry (6-ft-3, Jr, Small Forward), Daniel Oturu (6-ft-5, Fr, Power Forward), Frank Delaney (6-ft-7, Sr, Center), Donnell Gresham (6-ft-3, Sr, Point guard), Jalan Ousley-Brown (6-ft-5, Jr, Small forward)

2 2 Morgan Park (IL): Morgan Park is the gem of this year’s event when it comes to outstate teams. They are 6-1 having played a partially national schedule and are led by one of the top unsigned point guards in the nation Marcus LoVett (the four star Rivals.com national recruit has offers from UCLA, Illinois, Kansas, Tennessee, St. John’s, San Diego State, and others). According to PrepHoopsIllinois.com (the authority on high school recruiting in Illinois) LoVett is the 8th best prospect in the state. Junior guard Charles Moore and sophomore forward Romello Burell are top ten level prospects in the Chicago area.

DeLaSalle (MN): The three time defending Class AAA state champions will be playing their fifth team from out of Minnesota and thus far they are 6-2. Sacar Anim leads the team scoring 27 points per game assisted by 19 a night from Minnesota bound Jarvis Johnson and 11 a game from University of North Dakota signed Joshua Collins. Up front senior forward Jeffrey Daubanton leads the team in rebounding and he has signed with Briar Cliff University in Iowa. Sophomore four man Goanar Mar has already accumulated scholarship offers from Iowa State and Nebraska.

Key Match-Up: Marcus LoVett vs Jarvis Johnson. These are two of the elite lead guards in the Midwest and players that have been competing against one another in the EYBL playing with Mac Irvin Fire and Howard Pulley respectively for years. Both have a lot of talent around them so neither has to take the game over but if one forces the other into a bad game their team is likely to fall.

Top Prospects: Morgan Park: Romello Burell (6-ft-6, So, Power forward), Cortez Bailey (5-ft-8, Fr, Point guard), Jamal Burton (6-ft-2, Jr, Shooting guard), Alonzo Chatman (6-ft-8, Jr, Power Forward), Lenell Henry (6-ft-7, So, Power forward), Marcus LoVett (5-ft-11, Sr, Point guard), Charles Moore (5-ft-9, Jr, Point guard), Jarrin Randle (5-ft-11, Jr, Point guard) DeLaSalle: Sacar Anim (6-ft-4, Sr, Shooting guard), Josh Collins (6-ft-4, Sr, Small forward), Jarvis Johnson (6-ft-1, Sr, Point guard), Goanar Mar (6-ft-7, So, Power forward), Samm Jones (6-ft-1, Jr, Point Guard), Gabe Kalscheur (6-ft-2, Fr, Shooting guard), Jeffrey Daubanton (6-ft-6, Sr, Power forward)

Rice Lake (WI): Marquette signed Henry Ellenson (Rivals.com five star recruit) is the major individual draw of this year’s Timberwolves Shootout. Rice Lake is 5-1 so far this year with Ellenson scoring 34 points a game with 14 rebounds brought down on average. Ellenson has scored 204 of his team’s 412 points after six games (49.5 percent).

Champlin Park (MN): The Rebels have been the story of the season in Minnesota thus far with an undefeated record after 11 games and an unquestioned number one ranking having beaten top five teams Apple Valley, Cretin-Derham Hall, and Hopkins. At 19 points a game and the leader for the defensive player of the year award, Nebraska-Omaha signed Rebel guard JT Gibson has made himself a leader in the Mr. Basketball race. Wing Marty Hill has become one of the state’s most sought after junior college recruits (several offers) at 17 points a game and sophomores Theo John and McKinley Wright are two of the top five prospects in their class according to NorthstarHoopsReport.com.

Key Match-Up: Henry Ellenson vs Theo John. When Ellenson was in town a month ago in a nine point loss to Minnetonka, the Skippers saw Henry put up 48 points but they forced the big man to shoot over top of length resulting in 15 misses in 35 attempts (Henry could have had 60 if shots weren’t contested). John has to stay out of foul trouble because the Rebels are short on size if Theo gets in foul trouble (they have a couple 6-foot-5 juniors who are inexperienced).

Top Prospects: Champlin Park: JT Gibson (6-ft-1, Sr, Point guard), Marty Hill (6-ft-4, Sr, Small forward), Jeremy Johnson (6-ft-1, Sr, Shooting guard), Theo John (6-ft-8, So, Center), McKinley Wright (6-ft-1, So, Point guard), Aaron Kloeppner (6-ft-3, Jr, Small forward) Rice Lake: Henry Ellenson (6-ft-10, Sr, Power forward), Ben Widdes (6-ft-0, Sr, Point guard), Andrew Mattes (6-ft-2, Sr, Small forward)
