Northwest Youth Corps – AmeriCorps 450 Hour Internship Army Corps of Engineers – Lost Creek Lake Trail, Oregon Position Summary: Spring/Summer 2017 - The Army Corps of Engineers is currently recruiting for two positions that will support botany and natural resources management and restoration at Army Corps Lands based at Lost Creek Lake but work sites also include other Rogue River Basin Projects including Elk Creek and Applegate Lake. Duties and Responsibilities: Major duties are related to assisting the project natural resource management personnel in the implementation of upland prairie and wildlife habitat restoration, invasive species management, fisheries management, trail construction and repair, and other monitoring and management activities at Rogue River Basin. Interns will assist in the following areas: conducting field surveys to collect data on such items as rare, threatened and endangered plants; fish and wildlife populations, planting and monitoring the success of restoration plantings, invasive and non-native species management and recording of locations using a hand-held GPS unit, propagation and maintenance of the native plant nursery, native seed collection, trail and park maintenance, coordinating and directing the work of volunteers and work crews for weed management and native planting, and will assist in planning and execution of special events. In addition, 25%-50% of the intern’s time will be supporting the operation of the nature center, performing guided hikes and nature programs to the public, and assisting with children’s environmental education programs. About Lost Creek Lake: Lost Creek Lake, situated on the main stem of the Rogue River, is about halfway between Crater Lake National Park and Medford, Ore. along the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway. Lost Creek Lake is a multi- purpose project built and operated by the Portland District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Its purposes include flood damage reduction, power generation and water supply, with water quality, fish and wildlife enhancement and recreation as important benefits. Required Qualifications: Ability to work outdoors in remote settings and inclement weather on uneven ground Willingness to work independently in an outdoor setting Ability to lift and carry up to 30 lbs Excellent attention to detail Good written and verbal communication skills and a positive attitude Knowledge of Excel spreadsheets and Microsoft Word Willingness to submit to a government background survey Current driver’s license and clean driving record Must be comfortable riding in and working from a boat Desired Qualifications: Knowledge of Northwest natural resources and plants. Coursework in biology and strong interest in botany and conservation Previous experience using GPS units and ArcView GIS Duty location: Interns report daily to Army Corps office at Lost Creek Lake an hour north of Medford. Incumbents must arrange their own transportation to and from the office. Public transportation opportunities are limited. Carpool may be available. Terms of Employment: Two AmeriCorps members will serve a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours). Starting date is negotiable to accommodate student schedules. Time commitment is a minimum of 450 hours to be served between May and September, 2017. Program Benefits: $3,205.00 living allowance dispersed on a monthly basis, a $1,528.00 education award upon completion of the 450 hours of service and/or position requirements. The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own housing and food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal and driving background check.
